LONG NOSTALGIC STORY AHEAD, I SWEAR IT HIJACKS NOTHING
One day in High School a few years ago a couple of us disillusioned, bored-to-death seniors brought our Nintendo DS' during a pre-graduation ceremony. My friends and I were doing it so we could doodle lewd things in Pictochat, but a couple of other people who happened to join the room suggested Mario Kart.
So we start playing Mario Kart and I'm winning about every other game out of 4 people, doing really sneaky things to ensure I won (slowing down when I'm barely in 1st so I'd get a better item, use it on the guy who got ahead of me, then take a much bigger lead as he twirled around, etc.) The other guy who was winning was a total stranger to us who happened to join. We were doing one final race after I had won twice in a row (Bowser's Castle), and on the last lap Total Stranger and me are neck-and-neck. I happened to be Bowser and he was a lightweight character (I think Toad) so as we approached the finish line, I got really desperate, so I did a turn that would have been racing suicide--if I missed. BAM! I broadside him with all my weight and he goes flying into a grove of dark trees. I give an evil laugh knowing I've won, but then.. Someone pauses. Someone moves the cursor down to "QUIT." Someone hit the "A" button.
It was really, really, annoying for an instant. Then I started roaring with laughter at the audacity of my opponent to do that when I was just about to win. I insisted back in Pictochat to meet him in person and when we did he said I was a really good player and we started talking and after he mentioned he played Warhammer, I joined him in the hobby.
Sometimes it's worth having patience, especially if it's really obvious you were going to win anyway. No win-loss record beats having a good time!

I only buy games with multiplayer on it, just like playing with other people more enjoyable for me, if there is a little cigarette online abusing the mic i got menu > options > mute. done, now i enjoy the silence of killing people with good people. Im also competitive by nature, even in friendly games. Quit complaining about stuff you don't do.
But then again, if i really want to play a singleplayer only game (like borderlands, win) ill just torrent it and hamachi with my mates.

I care nothing for multiplayer, and I hate that single player games suffer because of MP's prevalence. That's why I hold games like the Half-Life series to be such beacons of hope - sure, they have multiplayer within them (in some form or another) but it is usually kept separate, in most cases acting like a completely different game, keeping the single player side unspoilt.

I played before the ubiquity of the word "noob". It's rediculous, really. Everyone starts playing eventually, so why is that an unsult? Why do people feel the need to put each other down by calling each other something that implies that they lost simply because the victorious player is willing to sacrifice more of his real life to be slightly better at a silly leisure activity? Oh right, morons and children.

It may very well have been cool back when multiplayer gaming was considered it's own little "scene". Now that it's been exposed to the idiotic masses it's become a beast all it's own that feeds on the ignorance and hate of a generation of social abortions.

And, to stray from my usual trend of blaming Jervis for the world's ills, I actually put the blame for this reality square on the heads of the X-Box and Halo - the game that did to gaming what Jervis did to the Dark Angels.

^This. I mostly play strategy games, and replacing an AI opponent with a human one doesn't really add anything for me, as I treat most games as sandboxes. Everything is just there for me to experiment, build, and see my plans coming to fruition. A human opponent would just gum up the works.

Sorry, my bad, I meant just the first one. The other two were Microsoft realizing just how much money they could actually make with this little project Bungie was working on and ended up encouraging all of this idiocy.

i tend not to join or initiate any random pick up games, i join or start friends only lobby's in L4D, but i have a pretty diverse friends list so not matter what time it is there are always at least 8 people online so i don't have the random issue. I do get a bit fed up of the fools in Aion. but even then it's only 2 clicks to ignore them

I like online for FPS on Xbox.. cause its more of a challenge.. But sometimes its too much of a challenge, And you just get owned.
Also Recently a friend of mine was playing on halo and I gave him the mike.. where he proceeded to out troll everyone who had a mike on by insulting them and not acknowledging their comebacks.. The most hilarious part was he got a friend invite from his behaviour.
I also think DoW2 is ok online.. however I only play 1v1 cause I hate interent people. And I havent played for ages due to lack of Chaos.
But the game Im most looking forward to, (and I generally never look forward to a game) is Mass effect 2. So single player with a really good game is superior to MP.

I play single player (offline).
Alhough my PS2 does have a network adaptor, this was purchased solely for the IDE connector on it (that allowed me to plug in a spare HD which replaces the need for memory cards).
It has NEVER been connected to my router/modem. Before I had a home net connection, I'd use a local internet cafe - and the behaviour of the regular OLG (on line gamers) - mostly teens - pretty much guaranteed I'd never want to play against them (or WITH them).
If the game has a nice single player campaign mode, I'm fine.

I played Unreal Tournament against bots. Had a blast.
Friend and I spent literally hours playing Battlefield 1942 in co-op mode... vs bots. Had a blast, and were bitterly disappointed when they removed co-op from the game. Then even more disappointed when they fethed the IA in Battlefield 2 so it always guns for you - even ignoring (or stopping a fire fight with) enemy bots to come after you.
My fav games are the Max Payne series, the God of War series and the holy Half-Life series, none of which have any (or any real) multiplayer to speak of.
I don't mind co-op against the computer, that's fine - did that tons of time in Diablo or Total Annihilation with a friend over a LAN, but single player all the way.

Oh, come on. Halo just happened to be the first great game on a brand new console that everyone was scrambling for, and because it was so successful, almost every console FPS aspires to be like it. It's not a bad series, it just has too much of an influence. In fact, Halo is my favourite FPS series, far above Counter-strike or CoD in my opinion.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made. |

It makes me sad that coop is almost dead on the PC and now more or less treated as a console only feature.
Last coop game that my brother and I played over the LAN and actually enjoyed a bit was World at War, but other than that.. We need more stuff like Serious Sam again, or games that allow for single player to be played in coop as with uhm, Saints Row 2, Rainbow Six Vegas 2 orrrr something not as horrible as Red Alert 3.

Red Alert 3 turned me off with every single unit having to have an extra function that had to be manually toggled on and off(many of which were better off left as auto-attacks). I never had to tell my Mammoth tanks in RA1 to use their cannons on tanks and buildings and their missiles on infantry and planes. It made a frustrating level of micromanagement necessary to success.

Have you tried out Killing Floor off Steam?
That game, while being a kinda cheap knockoff of Left 4 Dead, is amazingly fun. You're basically carving a bloody path through zombie/monster infested London. You get to set up chokepoints, weld doors shut, and they're putting out CHEAP(like $1.25USD/"episode") DLC on a pretty good basis. It's like $14.95ish USD for the game.
They've also been setting it up so that, with the new content--no matter what the weapons are available free, even if you don't purchase the new content.

Whoa, whoa, whoa. Back up a sec Cheese. A 'great' game? No. Halo would have been a great game if it'd had come out in '98-'99 like it was supposed to. On the PC. Where it was set to be the 'Half-Life Killer'. What we got was the dumbed down generic monstrosity that us PC gamers still at the hands of today. That's not Bungie's fault (Halo was a game for the Mac originally, would you believe), it's Microsoft's fault.
Cheese Elemental wrote:almost every console FPS aspires to be like it.
Translation:

Thanks to Halo, we don't have health bars any more (you just sit in the corner sucking your thumb until your health recharges). Thanks to Halo, more and more games limit the weapons you can carry (I tend to like FPS's that contain loads of weapons).
Cheese Elemental wrote:It's not a bad series
Oh it's not bad. It's just mediocre, uninspiring, run-of-the-mill.
Cheese Elemental wrote: In fact, Halo is my favourite FPS series, far above Counter-strike or CoD in my opinion.
That you would lump Counter-Strike in there (especially given this thread's topic), says something... I don't know what it says, but it says something.
