my buddy says that If im not using the aforementioned codices, then I'm playing Ultramarines. I'll be basically playing Vulkan and a list of salamander fluff based units, but he says I'm just ultramarines painted a different color, using a Salamander HQ.
What do you guys think?
I know its not a "rules" thing, but the forum is called 'you make da call' and we were debating the fact.

I reckon there is just an annoyance at ultramarines because games workshop loves them, but here I would say you are right here and he forgot Black templars and good luck with the salamanders.

From a fluff perspective, think of it this way. The primarch of the ultramarines wrote the Codex Astartes. ALL space marine chapters barring the noted exceptions above have adopted this codex.

I didn't forget Black Templars. I omitted them, because they are STUPID!!1!!+1
Just kidding, yeah I forgot them. That's kinda lame that the army is still UM. It doesn't make any sense since they all have their own Primarchs with their own fluff and worlds where they came from etc. Just because they used some fat-fisted dude's book for their rules... =(
"What army do you play?"
"Ultra Salamander Vulkan 'strong hand' Calgar Marines... It's a working title."

-Hits with a brick-
Actually, only Two of the original 20 Legions have adopted the Codex Astrates in Full, the Ultramarines and the Imperial Fists.
The Space Wolves and the Iron Hands (who you "have" to use the SM codex to play) take a massive piss on the Codex, while the Salamanders pretty much do their own thing too.
All the other Original Legions run a modified version of it.
So to the OP, your friend is just a spiteful hater, who is wrong on so many levels it's not even funny.

This is codex ultramarines, with a few special charactes so you can pretend you are something else. The organization of the units in the book is codex adherent, and as said only two legions are actually codex adherent. You could make a case for imperial fists, but even they have differences from this.

So fluff wise maybe but as the codex system goes the vanilla marines with A guy from a chapter is not spiteful or wrong. It's a fact. BA, BT, SW, and DA actually have something codex wise stands apart.

Vulkan is the only salamander fluff character and gives a bit of a salamander feel to vanilla marines. I know the op he posted this to get people riled and for you gwar it has done it magic. It was a social trial to prove the best way to keep a thread on dakka going is to start a good ole fashion arguement, not to actually help or tactics advice.

I am nothing if not consistent
But the OP Said "Ultramarines", when they are actually "Space Marines"
TBH though, I have found that the Standard Codex is a good Fit for most chapters, but the original Legions are poorly represented with the exception of the Ultramarines and Imperial Fists.

You see I'm gonna have to go with Gwar, I mean sure you have to take a special character to have the variations between chapters, but still they aren't all Ultras.
Ultras are far less stubborn than the Imperial Fists and the rules for Captain Lysander reflect how the Chapter acts.
I will how ever say that back in 4th the differences between the Codex chapters were more profound. Automatically Appended Next Post: Also this strikes me as more a background thing then a YMDC thing

To be honest if your playing Salamanders then the whole army have TL-Flamy weapons, Master crafted thunder hammers and you don't have combat tactics (you can't play them with out Vulkan).. In my books that's a large difference, which force quite unique builds.

Actually this thread was not just an experiment or some such. It was an honest question looking for some honest answers.
I say that the army is "Space Marines" and all of the chapters are just branches off that carry unique rules, leaders, fluff, etc.
It's not an army of ultramarines with some dudes who said one day "we're tired of ultramarining around. we should be salamanders! yeah!" before commencing an awesome-lucrative high-five fest. The different chapters were born(e) of different unique methods and locations, so not everyone is an Ultra with a different paint job.
That's my view of it.

Fluffwise the Ultra's cant use half the builds that Crimson fists, Imperial fists and salles can.
The Ultramarines first company was literaly wiped out, that means (fluffwise) you cant play TH/SS Termies and LR spammage, or Sternguard spammage.
Both those builds are very fluffy for certain chapters.

Well..
Codex Space Marines, is for all Chapters that follow the rules listed by Guilleman at the end of Horus Heresy.
And ... no. We are not Ultramarines painted in a different way.
As an everyday player, I feel strange that people points up that all SM chapters are ultramarines with different scheme colors. This means that they do not read the story of the chapters and hence... well, don't give a damn about it.
As an Imperial Fist, who has been shot by the Ultra Smurfs to get their damned codex approved, I feel insulted. I'm a strong head... I love using my pain glove and I've nearly lost my chapter in the Iron Cage! I'm not an Ultramarine!
(LOL)
