Hi guys.
Just finished (well it is still a WIP actually since I need to go over final brushing up of small things tomorrow but its as good as finished)
the wolf/celtic themed shield. Unfortunately due to time rushing I couldnt get the details to be perfectly flawless round all over, was a bit tricky sculpting but also fun, would need more time to correct one or two things but then it would never be finished if I know myself

A thing I still consider changing is the inner narrow band with runes on it just inside the main circle of patterns. It kinda looks to busy and maybe I should remove it and give more space to the inner shield. That is up to you guys to decide.

Also, did a dragon and "iron wolf" (from the concept art) mini icon and made a loose fit inside the shield to see roughly how it would look so dont worry, the icons are not properly fitted/sculpted on, just there to show the wolf and dragon themes and how those might look like. Personally I´ll use a squad of minis geared out with the dragon version and a squad with the plain one. Be fun to paint those buggers once I have them casted up

Oh, its going to casting in about one weeks time now. Its going to be cast in pewter so the knuckle guard on the back side will be cast as a loose piece but I sculpted it to fit like a hand in a glove on the hand rails so no problem there. Just going to brush up the details tomorrow.

Also, since it will be in pewter the front cables might be tricky to remove if you dont like them, I added them straight from the concept art though since no body complained then and they give a nice hi-tech touch on the front.
It is not to late to change it and if popular demand is I take them away then either the thing needs to be cast in resin (and cost more, your choice) or have the cables removed pre casting.
OR...removed, made to fit and cast separately with the shield as an option (also a tiny cost increase).
Your call guys.

Hope you like it

I'm diggin the actual shield, but the dragon icon looks kind of off. I'm not really sure whats wrong with it, but it just doesn't look right. The wolf looks awsome though it reminds me of the old anglo-saxon helmets... only on a wolf... thats a good thing in my opinion.

Not sure about the bare cabling over the front of the shiled, maes it look like it's got a vulnerable spot. Band with the runes looks good though, not too busy just that front cabling thats a drawback to it's look imo.
Still an impressive job on it though.

The cabling looks out of place. Since the shield will take a lot of hits, it seems like those would get cut to ribbons.

I love the rest of it. Please leave an option for a blank spot in the middle- I'd like to paint stuff there instead of having an icon. The icon almost makes the front too busy.

Personally, I can't say I like the look of the cabling. It looks out of place and clashes with the theme of the shield. Loving the intricacy though.

True, I dont like the cabling much either, having it on the back makes much more sense.

Tom you forgot to show them the 2 different Dragon Icons, I prefer the one with the circle around it.

Best in my opinion

Eh..

The one with the circle looks much better.

I actually like the cabling...gives it more of a futuristic touch. And, we could always assume that the mesh shielding the cables is just as tough as the shield itself...I mean, c'mon, their are exposed cables all over space marines.

Yep it's more interesting thopugh for some might be too busy with all the other detail, others it'll fit in perfectly. I think the one without in the picture looks off due to it being at an angle compared to how the icon usually sits, a bolt in the way there.

I'd love to buy a 10 man squad worth......without the cabling =)

the detail looks great but the cables ruin it for me. i understand the concept behind them (old celtic shield with power generator installed with cabling) but they draw the eyes away from the otherwise incredible detail. i'm assuming the inspiration for this came from the SW codex but the art on page 29/30 that shows similar shields doesn't have the obtrusive cabling. only because you said they are still a WIP, i'd suggest keeping the cabling on the back and having it recede into a port while still on the back of the shield. it maintains the scifi look from one angle while maintaining the vikings in spaaaace look from the other. besides, you might sell a few to some fantasy nuts without the cabling. just my $0.02.

Or maybe have the cabling go into ports on the side-edges of the shield instead of the front.

Think it'd look ok as long as it didnt interfere with the outer design, do you have a rough sketch how it'd look?

I´ll just remove the cables and have them loose along with the knuckle guard.
Some people like them, some dont. I like them personally and would like to provide people with the choice to add them or not.

Will also sculpt a version with a normal round metal buckle in the center of the shield.

Well like my above post said, when you have them without cables PM me and let me know I'll pre-order/pre-pay for 10 of them.

Any news on Space Wolf-esque shoulder pads from chapterhouse, btw?

I really dont know if there will be any SW shoulder pads, seriously, if you look at the GW sprues, i cant see us adding any more to the Space Wolf options?

We will probably do Heresy Wolf Terminator pads.

Dunno why but I absolutely love stormshields, I think that gives so much character to terminators.
I´m starting to work on cog themed shields now.

Any other ideas just throw them at me

Just wait till I start sculpting for orks and eldar armies

As for the SW pads, well, there will be 1, possibly 2-3 regular pads.
I have wolf skulls to play with as well as my own "iron wolf" themes and then pre heresy style SW pads.
As for wolf terminators there will be 2 regular and at least 2 pre heresy styled ones.

I'm looking forward to the Ork stuff. Bear in mind, that there are a lot of Greenskins clamoring for Mega Armor....

I think I know what's 'Off' about the Dragon Shield. It's not symmetrical. If you take a good look, the 2 rounded parts don't line up. It's just off enough to cause people to notice it but not be able to point it out.

And I like the cabling, for what it's worth

"Orkses never lost a battle. If we win we win, if we die we die fighting so it don't count. If we runs for it we don't die neither, cos we can come back for annuver go, see!"

I dig how in a setting where giant, muscled fungus men ride Mad Max cars and use their own teeth as currency, the concept of little engineering dudes with beards was considered a step too far down the aisle of silliness.

I personally would like to see a Herod Deathwolf great company shoulderpad. I am in the process of painting my new wolves, and a nice shoulderpad would make them shine.

Not that I have an interest in it, but I'm sure a lot of Marine players would love to see some more right-handed power fists. I think the only one out there is the Assault Squad one.

Know, the shield is not perfectly symmetrical. I didnt have the time needed to make all the details flawlessly round, sorry.

Orks will get heavy armour kits for starters, I´m tired of ugly plates with spikes on to represent heavy armour.
Later on maybe ork power armour but that will be a big project. Thanks for the idea though, didnt think of it.

As for the cabling on the shield, the majority dont like it but for you who really want it speak up! You need to nag Nick to death to keep it or else the bugger will refuse to cast it.
I´m thinking casting the cables loose but that depends on:
A: how much actual space they would steal in the mold.
B: How many people would really want the cables.

I personally would like to see a Herod Deathwolf great company shoulderpad.

Pic or codex page reference?
Now I cant copy GW art but if it looks good enough and can be properly remade I might do it.

Dont worry dude, its on the table
