I was wondering if anyone out there in dakka land ever wagers on their games (frequently or infrequently).

It could be $20 to the winner, loser buys the frosty adult beverage... or just side bets like "$5 my assault squad kills at least X of your figs".

Do you add anything to a game besides traditional scoring to make increase the level of interest or layer challenges through a match?

I think betting money on the game would really change the dynamic. When something's at stake, people tend to be playing just for the win and won't be trying to have fun.

Something minor like the winner buying the loser a beverage is pretty good though.

And can you imagine the tantrum that model throwers will have when their kewl uber-model gets plastered by a railgun shot AND they lose $20? Man, don't wanna be there for that particular NoF (Nerd of Fury) excitement.

Played many a game where the winner buys the first round after the game.

Edit: also, in tourney games when I'm using my 1st Lustrian IG (lizardmen IG), I'll put out one of the old lizzie icons as an ante, they beat me, they keep it.

This is interesting to me. I also play golf which routinely you may place wagers on shots (closest to the pin), low score for a hole, number of lost balls on a water hole.... etc. Generally it keeps your "attention" through the match, so even if you are losing overall you can still concentrate on other areas and keep the "competition" up.

I figure there might be a "gaming" equivalent so even if you are getting tabled, you would be able to perform admirably in another area that is wagered on. This would maintain interest over the course of a match.

Some general guides for me:

1)No placing bets randomly against players with whom I was not extremely familiar. The betting should be friendly not create a "cut throat environment" and with only people you know well.

2) the bets would be amounts that are "easily afforded" between the competitors. Equally, the bets should be small enought that winning said amount would also not create the "a-HOLE"/Nerd Rage syndrome. If you are gripping over $10 on a "challenge" then you should be playing for .50 cents.

3) Bets around the character, squad, unit or other significant feat would hold more interest to me then bets on the final out come of the game.

4) 2 or 4 side bets of $2 each rarely ends up with a one sided winner. Generally both parties get a ducket or two.

Hi

About 5-6 years ago, I wagered that my 40K Gt army was superior to my FLGS storeowner's potential GT army.

The stake was that the loser pays for both entries to the Canadian GT. We had two months to prep for the battle.

When the day came for the game, the FLGS owner had not even assembled his army, giving me the default win. He was a good sport about it and paid for the entry.

Cheers,
Carlos the Craven

I've bet on other people's games before (usually a couple bucks, or buying dinner after or something). One time I bet a guys a Eldar Pathfinder squad would live through the game, and on the last turn the marine player he was facing took a flamer to them, running them off the board afterward. 'twas annoying

I've pondered that five dollar bills would make good objectives with the player who controls them keeping them.

Had a friend that played for dice. Loser hands over one die at the end of the game. I think he had over 100 or so and one complete set. He used to bring out the bag at the start of the match and say

"your dice will look good in my collection of losers".

Took 2 of mine.

This is silly! Buttons are not how one escapes dungeons! I would smash the button and rain beatings liberally down on the wizard for playing such a trick!

I only play for beers.

A recent opponent wanted to bet drinks with me on the outcome of certain assaults/fire-exchanges during the game.

I pointed out that i had a hip-flask full of tequila with me.

Can't remember who won, but i'd certainly play him again

I bet a beer with a friend recently on a rules dispute.

We didn't have a copy of the DE codex with us, and disagreed in our recollections of whether it's a LD test or an Initiative test for the "kill a psyker at the beginning of the game" item.

Heck no. All the tactics and strategies in the world mean squat if the dice never roll over a 2.

The only thing I'd ever bet against is rule disputes, but then again never for cash money.

I like the idea of 40K as a drinking game. Exceptional luck, both good and poor, means one has to take a slug/shot/whatever. Like, say, anything with less than a 20% probability.

"Well, you made all 12 cover saves, but that also means that you won't be able to operate your showlaces by the time this round is done."

Infinity: Way, way better than 40K and more affordable to boot!

$1000 per game limit 4 game tourney in Vegas. Winner takes half the winnings, best general a quarter and the other quarter to the house. Tranquilizers on hand for Nerd Rage. One shot of Tequila to be consumed every 3 turns. Who's in?

I think the $5/ objective would be a cool thing to do with friends, but anything making a tourney scene more competitive would be disasterous.

When playing kill points I like to bet on the spread.

Build a fire for a man and he will be warm for a day; set a man on fire and he will be warm for the rest of his life.

Sly Marbo was originally armed with a power weapon, but he dropped it while assaulting a space marine command squad just so his enemies could feel pain.

My local store manager set up a bet he would get 20k of Lizardmen assembled/painted/based/+display board by the end of 2009.

This was following the Lizardmen release at the beginning of the year.

There were at least 12 takers. 100 bucks each. He still has a majority of his models unassembled and unpainted.
One better also dropped out (a former staff GD winner) stating thaty the paint plan was too simple.
Another better has 'bought out' six participants, so he has a slave for $700 worth of work!

I also commisioned the Lizardman player to build/paint a pair of Vindicators for me... at least it will help him pay all of his new debt.
