I haven't played a game yet but I'm sure when i do (against people I'm familiar with) i will be putting little wagers here and there.
£2 per objective held
£2 for every figure you HQ kills
£5 for killing the HQ's
Stuff like that I would gladly do. I get pretty competitive though so it could/will be more.
I'm a student so I naturally play a lot of poker. I'm pretty sure most student's gamble their loans...well...at least i do.

Of course, as an American, that means I must say that soccer sucks, and football (real football... you know, the one where you do everything with your hands) is 10,000 times as good. I mean, football players could probably beat up soccer players, even, because they actually know sports. Never really threw down money on games, though I suppose we could. I suppose for us it rarely comes down to us not having much side interest in what units do. I might guess that 3/4 of my girl's melta shots would miss, or the Cannoness would live or die, but then it might be easier to just assign victory points or something. Generally our interest in the outcome is great enough that it never occured to us to require more.
I suppose part of it is that the actual monetary amount might be tricky. 5$ might not be worth risking the win on, but 20$ would be more than I would be comfortable taking really.

It could get quite tactical if the guy who loses models gets the beers, because everybody would try to win but kill as few models as possible and lose as many as he can...without losing the game

If you want to wager go this route
1500 points maximum ( we didn't play higher than that)
HQ
2 Bucks per
Elite
Nickel a point
Troop
Penny a Point
Fast Attack
2 pennies a point
H. Support
3 Pennies a Point
Basically you really buy in to the game with what you purchase with a Maximum of 1500 points.
Okay so I have
HQ x 2 = 4 dollars = 2 350 points
Elites
300 point or 1500 cents or 15 bucks
Troops
600 points = 600 pennies = 6 bucks
Fast Attack
150 = 300 pennies = 3 bucks
Total Cost 1500 = 28 dollars because of my selections
My Opponent
Does
1 HQ = 2 Bucks = 200 points
Elites
800 points = 4000 cents O_O = 40 bucks
Troops
500 points = 500 cents = 5 bucks
His army is 47 dollars
So you understand the basic scheme of things when
My "buy in" is 28 and that is my wager
His buy in is 47 dollars
I kill 1 HQ = 2 bucks
I kill half elites = 20 bucks
I kill half troop = 2.50 bucks
So He owes me 24.50
He kills of mine
Both HQ = 4 bucks
All of my Elites = 15 bucks
Fast Attack = 3 dollars
I owe him 22 dollars
You split the favor and I pay him 2.50 cents.
Its actually kind of fun because most the time people will load up on Troops etc.. in order to benefit from the low buy in. You can also go low and not use all of the 1500.
Say i play a 18 dollar army at 1000 point
and he plays a 34 dollar army at 1500.
Once I get my 18 dollar worth I am good to go and everything else is gravy.

I don't understand why a lot of people are vehemently opposed to making any sort of wager. Does no one remember "playing for keeps" in Magic the Gathering or Yu-Gi-Oh card games, and pogs?
So what's wrong with setting a few folded-in-half 5 dollar bills on the table and using those as objectives, or betting a dollar per kill point?
I think it adds flavor, straight betting just feels silly. Though putting a few candy bars, a couple fivers, or maybe a face-down blister or two on the table would make for an exciting change.

"I drive a big car, cuz I'm a big star. I'll make a big rock-and-roll hit." "I am a big car, and I'm a strip bar. Some call it fake, I call it good-as-it-gets."
I am both selfish and chaotic. I value self-gratification and control; I want to have things my way, preferably now. At best, I'm entertaining and surprising; at worst, I'm hedonistic and violent. |

Take a poll and find out how many people said " that" to playing for keeps in Magic, other card games, or pogs. It would be interesting to see what the results would be.
People's thresholds for acceptable gambling vary. I'll be one of the sticks in the mud who admits that I have a strong enough dislike of gambling. I've actually had occasions when I couldn't enter a tournament because it felt too much like gambling at the time, but "Loser buys the winner a drink"'s just fine because it feels like a favor.

If you wanted a fun game each player donates £2 to each objective, so if you got 5 objectives each would be marked on the board by a £2 coin from each player on top of each other. thus a whole new incentive to go for the objectives.
