Since I started here I've started collecting Hordes and WOTR, based on what people said about it and so on. I'm very tempted by Warcanto and am looking sideways at AT-43. Has posting on Dakka lead anyone else to branch out from their (presumably GW) roots?

And as a second question, has it been worth it, in your opinion?

I've picked up the Flames of War starter set along with some platoon blisters after hearing a lot of praise from others. I bust it out every now and then for when we want something other than the regular poison.

edit.

Can't forget about Dark Heresy and Rogue Trader. It's a new addiction of sorts!

Yes I started picking up infinity recently as they are amazing models.

Listen, my children, as I pass onto you the truth behind Willy Wonka and his factory. For every wonka bar ever created in existance, Mr. Wonka sacraficed a single Oompa Loompa to the god of chocolate, Hearshys. Then, he drank the blood of the fallen orange men because he fed them a constant supply of sugary chocolate so they all became diabetic and had creamy, sweet-tasting blood that willy could put into each and every Wonka bar. That is the REAL story behind willy wonka's Slaughter House!

I was wonderin what the hell Malifaux was and now I'm really attracted to the models, but I've got no money nor friends who'd want to play.

So eh.

Constantly being bombarded with the "What's New" Infinity stuff made me decide to finally take the plunge.

I took advantage of Neal's after-Christmas sale and got 3x starter sets(Ariadna, PanOceania and Combined Army--for $100 no less!) that I can potentially use as demo sets at the FLGS--or just for screwing around with some friends and doing a small game of Infinity using the Kasr table I'm working on's city section.

Curse you, Dakka, for keeping me with the 40k models even after years of not playing the game.

Though I take a year off from GW in 2010, I know Dakka sustained me in the hobby during
the years when I simply had no hobby contact to speak of.

I checked out Malifaux after reading about it here, and just signed up to be a Henchman for them in the Northern BC area (mostly Prince George). After reading Russ' review of Firestorm Armada, I bought the rules for it and have been pleased with them.

Also read about Uncharted Seas here for the first time, and though I haven't bought the rules (yet), I have some Infinity minis winging my way right this minute.

Oh, and Flames of War (yeah, yeah, I know... I kind of collect table top systems as a hobby too!)...

nope. No matter how awesome the next big "GW Killer" is to the vocal internet minority. The game still won't be played in my area and the company still probably won't be here in a year.

I used to get burned by the fly-by-nights alot.

Warzone, Chronopia, Starship Troopers. Got burned by all of those.

Believed the hype for Warmachine and got burned by a bad game with bad players that make the worst of the local GW kiddies look great.

Believed the hype for Flames of War and got burned by a bad game with bad history buff players "your camo is 2 shades too light and you have a late war APC in a mid war army. BTW, wanna play? My army is 4 King Tigers"

I'll stick to 40k thanks.

It's mainly the models of a given game that will as often as not inspire me to take it (the game) up.

The models for Warmachine, on the whole did not inspire me (boring churchy mek units, boring organic-y looking mek units, chunky & brutal russian-inspired mek units) the Cygnar being the sole difference. Mind you, the relatie weakness of the cygnar starter box doesn't help.

I was inspired to start infinity because of the models. I'm a cyberpunk fan from way back anyway. That the rules are available FREE as a download helps enormously.

I don't play much anymore, so the majority of my purchased are based on "oooooh, cool". Dakka is a good way of amalgamating interesting miniatures.

Much more miniature ranges than games I find. I generally play what the club's playing. However I've acquired Malifaux and Wargames Factory miniatures after seeing them on Dakka and I'm hoping to get some Old Crow models at some point

It is an oath we honour. You know that you don't have to get rid of your GW stuff if you try another game, right?

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.

Mentally I've dropped GW and have been looking at Infinity primarily. While there's no income at the moment to start Infinity it is on the to-do list. I'd say the move is definately worth it.

I understand, but I'm not going put the time, effort and money into another game system when I'm perfectly happy with 40K.

It's the little companies that are producing excellent work that are the most obvious thing for me. Mostly, the effect is to make me consider what I'm at with my hobby spending, and whether I'd get more real enjoyment by allocating it elsewhere.

I mean, since switching to Hordes, I can say that rules wise I find it a lot better, and I like PPs attitude more. But to be honest, I am not a fan of all of their miniatures, and the fact that it's mostly metal is annoying at times (my trolls need a minor repaint and several repair jobs at the moment due to this). I can see why it has to be primarily metal, but when GW are putting out things like the plastic screaming bell, it does hold my attention.
The other point is that I'm getting tired of the heroic scale to a degree. I still like it, but painting LOTR has made me really appreciate properly proportioned miniatures. Which in turn points me at other ranges. Overall it's been interesting. Dunno what I'll be doing next, but I certainly feel like I'm starting to consolidate what I have for 40K and Fantasy, and look to other scales and systems for my fun.

wherever your socks are

Well because of dakka i have bought 8 starter fleets + 4 carriers for firestorm armada.

But the best thing was that dakka made me aware of battlefoam. Just got my 1520 in today and thanks to that i can soon have my first game of 40k

Dakka is a good place to read but it has a bad influence on my wallet
