As far as I know, Dakka has a rather neutral opinion on smoking, so I thought I'd share this hilarious website with you I just found.

http://scenesmoking.org/frame.htm

On scenesmoking.org movies are only rated by the amount of tobacco smoked in them. As someone who doesn't smoke but is tollerant about it, I find most of this stuff pretty funny.

Did You Hear About the Morgans? - PG-13
Hugh Grant and SJP both take a stand against smoking but are shot down by a grandfather smoking around a child.

Invictus - PG-13
South Africa needed a leader; Nelson Mandela gave them a champion, who set an example by remaining tobacco free.

The combined light of the cigars in Hellboy was brighter than Hellboy's skin. PL

Thank goodness there are now movies where people hurt or even kill eath other. Wait...

Did you know Sergio Leone included more shots of Eastwood/Fonda/whoever else smoking cigars in his spaghetti westerns because Italian audiences liked to see it and were allowed to smoke in cinemas. True fact.

This site looks damn awesome.... it's a bit like how much brandy they drink in a spy film.....

"How about a brandy Mr Bond?"

He must be barely sober at the end of each day.... mind you it's worse in the TV series Spooks when Harry is drinking nearly every second.... mind you it does make me chuckle ^_^

I don't smoke (I'm asthmatic) but I think in certain settings it does look cool, sometimes even sexy. Film noir NEEDS smoking, Hong Kong Blood Opera ditto. Smoking brought us great characters, such as the smoking man from the X-Files dangit!

i totally hate smoking personally, my mom had lung cancer from it, it totally sucks both balls at once. However, i have nothing wrong with people that actually enjoy smoking and I'd never tell someone other than my own kid that they're not allowed to do it. Especially when it's an addition and they can't always help it. I do like that restaurants are smoke free and stuff, but I feel bad for smokers when they gotta stand outside when it's 2 degrees.

Why? They decided to go out and light up. They knew the weather conditions. If they decide they can't wait half an hour for a smoke its no one's fault but their own.

I grew up with a mum who both smoked and ran a pub so even though I don't smoke I have had my fair share of second hand smoke. I dont have a problem with it, everyone now knows the dangers so if they are happy to take there chance then its up to them. The tax from ciggarettes pretty much funds the NHS in the UK.

Oddly enough the smoking ban effected me as a non smoker in a very negative way, in fact it almost forced me to take it up! Myself and a group of mates used to regularly go to the Bristol beirkeller on a friday night. As with all groups of mates there will be one of them who is a cross between Arnold J Rimmer and Christopher Biggins, unfortuanately for me he was the only other member of the group who didn't smoke. This meant when everyone went outside for a smoke I was left with Christopher Rimmer. It almost made me a smoker!

Don't smoke, but I'm not bothered by others doing it, as long as they don't breathe in my face. Films don't do that, so I don't care. Most smokers seem pretty respectful of other peoples tolerance for it, and from personal experience they've always asked before lighting up when talking to me. Its the little things like that that matter.

I don't know about the rest of you,but when I go to see a film I DEMAND that the characters all put SAFETY FIRST..."Stop driving so fast!!,..put that gun down before some one gets hurt!!...Put that awful ciggarette out and for goodness sake please have those attractive women put their clothes on this instant!!!"...yup,safe and sound, that's my kind of entertainment.

Oh,in case it wasn't obvious,I smoke 20 packs a day and I'm not stoping ...ever.

This is madness.

Movies and TV shows frequently show people driving like maniacs and blowing the hell out of each other with automatic weapons. One of the most popular TV shows of the last decade revels in having the main 'hero' torture any one he suspects of being a baddie and people don't eve give it a second thought. Heck people love it.

But should a character say a naughty word or should we be shown show certain parts of their body, or if they indulge in the perfectly natural act of sex, or if have a drink, or smoke a cigarette, people go insane and call for censorship.

For anyone who thinks this is nuts I strongly recommend the movie 'Thank you for Smoking'. It shows that both big tobacco companies and anti smoking zealots can both but just as manipulative and gittish as each other.

Its simple smoke = fire = the devil

Therefore smokers are satanic worshipers who are treated like lepers.

I love how alcohol .. another fine drug is never bad mouthed in the same way.

You can even advertise alcohol on TV (in AUS) but can I find out how many milligrams are in my cigarette (you know the number that tells you how strong they are) .. no because knowledge is bad and you might smoke lights instead of quitting. Bah!

Rabid antismokers and quitters who become antismokers have two things in common with hilter; they are fascists who are against smoking, but no doubt partial to amphetamines.

And why cant I smoke in a bar, that what its for smoking and drinking. gaks slowed. Make girly bars for the delicate people and let me smoke in a bar again.

Off for a puff.

Sorry, I didn't quite get all of that,I was preoccupied reading the combined works of Anton Lavey while attempting to get a whole pack of ciggarettes into my mouth.
Seriously,I understand the sentiment of your post,we smokers have become a tad "demonized",but that's fine by me, I can live with being "the bad guy".
I will say that comparing anti-smokers to Hitler is a bit OTT ,but again I understand the sentiment.
And concerning smoking in bars/clubs etc. I agree, there should be a smoking area inside of bars/clubs...no,wait...some smoke might drift over and poison some ones pina colada...we can't have that.

If you buy a new copy of The Beatles' Abbey Road, the cigarette in John Lennon's hand will have been digitally removed.

It's good to tell people about the dangers of smoking, but trying to manipulate or censor art to enforce an anti-smoking message is bad.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

In a less flippant manner, as I've said around here before when there are a great many issues of importance in the world I find it mind boggling that something as inconsequential as whether or not an imaginary character in a movie lit up of their own free will is worth expending time and resources over. Additionally you cannot convince me that people are not aware of the fact that smoking is bad for them, not in today's society. If someone chooses to smoke today they are doing it fully aware of the consequences. There is no need for more awareness, more education, more criticism of the practice. Given that, its even more mind boggling that someone feels they have to take a stand against the evils of smoking and either decry or laud a film based on whether or not the characters in it smoke.

Education, not censorship, is the way to go simply said. Its like alchy, you know its bad for you, but its your choice of whether or not you want to do it. But on the other hand, unlike alchy, smoking directly can irritate someone else (in a bar), so I don't mind having places that don't allow smoking indoors. But a govt sponsored ban? IDK, goes too far. Let the restaurants/hotels/etc decide. Most places, when facing the facts of smoking, will be non-smoking. But then there can be the places that allow it, attracting smokers. Business flows on as usual.

I am not sure if any of that made any sense...

I remember the outrage when the smoking ban effected the area I currently live in (my county). Bar owners and restaurant owners were outraged by it saying they'd lose business.

I noticed the exact opposite. The bars are still as busy as they've always been but now they are busier with like minded individuals such as myself who choose not to smoke. The ones that do smoke go outside the bars and light up and then come back in. In the summer months most of them don't mind stepping outside as most bars let you take your drink with you (mostly for safety sake); the winter months is a whole different story but hey, if standing in -40F temps for 5 minutes to take 7 minutes off your life isn't your idea of fun than stop smoking.

Smokers might think they have more rights than non-smokers but they can stuff it. For the past 3 years I can go into any bar in my county (actually now most of the state) and enjoy clean (well smoke free air at least) air and not have sore lungs and watery eyes by the time I leave.

Also, big tobacco lawsuits are bs. If I was a judge I'd throw the case out without so mach as opening the file. Nobody forced anyone to start smoking, the dangers were well known going back as far as the 60's and people wanting to quit actually can; to say they can't is a copout of the most asinine of proportions. Nobody who chooses to do something of their own free will, either knowing the dangers or having found out the dangers afterwards, should be awarded millions of dollars for grief and strife and whatnot. You chose to do something that would kill you? Tough gak.

--The whole concept of government granted and government regulated 'permits' and the accompanying government mandate for government approved firearms 'training' prior to being blessed by government with the privilege to carry arms in a government approved and regulated manner, flies directly in the face of the fundamental right to keep and bear arms.

I don't. Unless you think that asking a question is an intrinsic indicator of a sensation of grief.

Strangely enough, 'importance' isn't an objective measure of anything. You might be annoyed that people expend energy on topics which don't interest you, but that seems like a rather silly reason to 'hate humanity'. Do you get annoyed when people watch movies you don't like? Or sit in chairs which aren't appealing to you? Does that cause you 'hate humanity'? Because this website has roughly as much of an effect on your life as either of those examples.

Life does not cease to be funny when people die any more than it ceases to be serious when people laugh.
