Hey guys, I'm pretty new to dakka, as well as Warhammer 40k. I was introduced to it by a friend of mine in high school, played a few games in 3rd ed. And I always thought the Dark Eldar army he had was the gak! I've just started putting my own kabal together, The Kabal of Night's Shade and being an art student, means that the painting side of things is fun also. I don't believe that the game is about winning, that's just a bonus so starting out with my own kabal doesn't really bother me all that much. I'm wondering how dakka's "RATING SYSTEM" works, like right now I'm supposedly an oozing grotesque?

Welcome aboard.
If you want to get good at DE, then read Thor's Tactica, then just check out some of the older post we have made on the subject.
I would only trust advice on DE from Thor, Seven, Dashofpepper, and myself. Currently we are the only competitive DE players that post regularly.
As for Dakka Ratings it changes with your post count. Or if you become a DCM you can make it what ever you want.

As to the rankings-
It goes up the more you post, pretty much
at 5, 10, 25, 50, 100, 250, 500, 1000 etc.
Most ranking strands have 16 or so ranks.
The admins and some mods know where they end.
I'm on top ranking currently but we were discussing 30,000+ rankings.
As a mod I can put in what I want (as can DCMs -Dakka Contributing Members)

Ach, am I no longer included in the list of venerable Dark Eldar Archons? Clearly my neglect of Dark Eldar army building threads over the last few months has led to my demotion.

I'm sorry. I just had an OC that I called Nightshade, and was going to convert him up as a DE Lord, because I don't really have much use for him.
Nightshade is a poison, which makes it good for a kabal name.
I'll just have to call my Kabal the "Kabal of Shade's Night"
