I don't know if this is new news but I only recently came across the discovery a few days ago so I thought I would post a thread on it. Apparently at the end of next month in China they are releasing a version of AoBR including a chinese rulebook. Very cool since it means more players at our FLGS (and China generally). Could even mean the beginning of a brand new tournament scene on this end if things go well which would absolutely amazing.

I hope that it takes off better in PRC than it has in Japan. It is rather sluggish here as 40K has a hard time competing with Gundam, anime, a plethora of card games and other nerdy pursuits.

lol I hope that will be true ,people who play wargames are always minority. There is a market ,but not that big like MMORPG or pop music ,they wont make so much money by copying GW or other gamesystem and models.

Beijing has always had more stores than Shanghai and they have been open longer so I'm not surprised. But I do know that Shanghai is now getting more business. A friend of mine who already owns 1 store is now looking to rent another shop with the express purpose of playing apocalypse games.
I don't know if he'll succeed but it's a good indicator that business is thriving.

Really? When I got to China in 2007 Shanghai had 2 Zark! shops and Beijing none. While I was there 3 opened in Beijing, not sure what happened in Shanghai. So I think Shanghai has the longer history.
But I did hear Beijing used to have shops before 2007 but they closed.
Anyway the key thing is yay GW in China!

So what are you trying to say about my old lead space marines? Not that I have many... just a few chaplains, a few assault marines, a land speeder and a pair of dreads, but still They are lead and I do not have a problem with that.

Not to break the train of nationalism or whatever this is, but don't we have like a dozen studios producing 40k centric models that don't work for games workshop? Also isn't there a significant movement on these boards to just resin cast everything anyway?
As for the chinese market entry, I hope it does well. It's a good market to get into with ludicrous potential for growth.

Oddly the GW in my corner of Japan seems to get the vast majority of its business in 40K (just as I switched to fantasy, it turns out). From Japanese and foreign customers alike. They always seem to be the same customers though, I rarely see demo games or strangers popping into the shop. I'm starting to think the common belief that 40K is in competition with Gundam/etc. is getting a bit outdated- you can't play Gundam after all. But I'm sure the moment GW achieves any serious recognition here, Bandai will correct that.

The difference is the studios we see are making original models that are based on GW IP (there's a whole issue there of whether they are producing something original or infringing by copying GW art etc, I won't touch it).
In China I saw people with whole armies of recast models, who would tell you this and tell you which company to call to make copies of what you want.
Huge difference.

In scale probably, though I don't see a tremendous difference as opposed to western ebay sales or smaller casting outfits. Certainly could cut into games workshops operating margins in the region though. Probably something store owners would have to be wary of.

Well, duh. China is the world's factory, with broadly-available cheap, efficient production systems. Who wouldn't knock off stuff when it's that easy and cheap? I strongly suspect that if I were to have my 2E-era stuff recast from my best-aligned and cleaned models, the average piece recast in China would be of far higher quality than the originals I got out of blisters a decade ago. And it would cost less, even before factoring inflation.

Do we think its just a matter of time before GW decides to outsource all its production to China?
The only way I can see this not being the case is if GW manages to get the Chinese government to come down hard on anyone making cheap copies. Otherwise they'll be forced to move just to protect their IP.

I played at Warhammer Club Beijing, it's run by a friendly British guy and his Chinese wife. Good group there.
