Does anyone know if it has even been attempted (recently attempted) making an exact video game copy of 40k? There are many board games that have these video game counterparts (Risk, Monopoly... Uno...), and although it might seem a tad ridiculous, these video games still serve their purpose of allowing someone to play the game without having the physical game. Or a partner within a reasonable vicinity to play the game with. I guess there are many advantages to having a video game counterpart. It can also be seen as completely unnecessary.

Thank you LunaHound for the help . Really sucks they got shut down. Guess that's why it's so hard to find. GW needs to cool down when it comes to fans making something for other fans.

They can't shut down "Vassal" as the engine is an open source software program and not even the most insane lawyer would attempt it.

What they shut down was the 40k module for Vassal.

if by video game you mean something along the lines of an RTS or an mmo? because i always wanted an MMO for 40k. unfortunately with blizzard destroying the market on that because of WoW i dont see it happening. plus you cant please everyone and if GW is going to be in on a 40k MMO it'd probably mean you all have to play some sort of SM faction. or have it along the lines of good vs evil, as in people can play either imperium/tau/eldar (maybe have some story line working them as allies, temporarily or otherwise) and then chaos (csm and daemons) nids, DE, necrons, and again having a sort of story line that works them as allies in some way (yes i know necrons dont talk and nids are controlled by the hive mind but these days you can retcon anything)

WoW has been dying for a couple of years now and there is a 40K MMO is production.

Also dividing the community into two sides is an amazingly stupid idea for the community, it just creates unneeded discrimination and prejudice.

What else would you do in the mmo? two factions give competition. otherwise your just fighting against pve, and no meaningful pvp competition. But thats just me

True about WoW. I believe that corpsesarefun is right about the 40k MMO. There have been rumours about it for quite a while, although nothing solid, the idea has been floating around for a long time.

or have it along the lines of good vs evil

I think this is the route it will take. They did it for WAR online and it was fine.

Anyway as cool as a 40k MMO would be I think the OP was talking about a vertion of 40k for computers, so you could play the game as it is now but on computers. This works in the idea but not very well in reality. Playing the game via computers takes a lot of the great things about wargames away. The feling of being directly involved, the social aspects, the assembling you own stuff (good for some people) are not present in a computer game. It would end up like the current strategy games. Also 40k isn't like the other games you mentioned, Risk, monopoly and uno only require you to buy the game once and then your set for life, if they sell the box for £20.00 and the video game for £20.00 they make money either way. $0k on the other hand is a game where you buy, then you buy some more and then more and so on. To stop the game being a loss they would need to sell it for about £200.00 which no one is going to buy.

PvE, free for all PvP, structured competitive team PvP, non-fighting activities.

Go see guildwars, its PvP is fully fledged online sport but the competitive PvP doesnt have good and evil factions.

I tried Vassal with a 40k module. It was exactly what I was looking for. Worked better then expected. Of course it doesn't compare to the actual Warhammer. But for someone who has been with the hobby for a while will appreciate this. It enables you to play with friends, half the world away.

There is a 40k MMO officially under the works:

http://www.vigilgames.com/games_40k.php

Let's hope they do something new. And not a full-blown MMORPG a.k.a. WoW. Would only work with a handfull of the races anyways.
MMO doesn't have to mean a grinding RPG fest.

Once again, guildwars.

Next to no grind whatsoever.

Grinding is the tool of subscription MMO's to get you to spend more time on it so they make more money, loose the subscription and you loose the need for grind.

Guild Wars DOES have grinding, but most of the time it isn't required. However, in the Factions campaign at one point you had to grind either Kurzick or Luxon points. Eugh. THAT was grinding. But yeah, Guild Wars has far less grinding than most 'traditional' MMO's.

I would really like to be able to play 40k on my computer.

Not a MMO, Not RealTime, not Vassal.

Regular turn-based 40k on my computer, both against the computer and with a solid multiplayer part to it.

It will never happen, but I still really wish for it.

That would indeed be awesome, especially as everything would be animated... /drool...

trouble is, most people would buy that instead of the actual models, so it'll never happen.

It would be cool if there was a WoW type 40K game that when you create a profile/character you must choose a guild to be a part of that would be your "army" you are a part of. There would be ways of changing your army however. For instance, if you attack an ally then you would be afflicted with some sort of "chaos point" or something that would eventually turn you over to the ruinous powers. Sorry Dark Eldar I suppose you are Chaos Elves once again in my video game hahaha

Actually, that wouldn't be such a bad Idea. I'm thinking make all the armies (bar nids and crons) player controlled alliances, and all the sub factions within those armies (craftworlds, chapters, regiments etc) guilds. That way it would play rather like EVE online, in that alliances/guilds can declare war on one another. This would suit the 40k aesthetic quite well too.

Would you be able to declare war against an allies army however? If there was a Dark Angel guild, and we were all on when there weren't very many Space Wolves players on, I would totally like to go on an allied ganking spree.

But that would probably ruin the game.

Also there would have to be a 'ratio' system which limited the amount of players in any particular faction, or something like that, so that not everyone just made SM characters.

@Ratbarf: There would have to be a way you could do things that meant no-one could prove what you had done, for assassinations or whatever, as well as radical inquisitors shady actions.

However, they must not have sold enough copys to expand on it. Chaos Gate was a really cool game for the record!!!

I meant like if the Dark Angels are their own guild, they can then declare qar on anyother guild, regardless of allegiance. If that could happen it could really mess up some stuff fluff wise, as you could have unofficial alliances and the like. I just think it would be funny however if a Dark Angels raiding party or "Kill Team" managed to get inside the fang assassinate Logan for the day. That'ld be a pretty cool ability though it would make little sense...

Basically what I am aiming for is like what Star Wars Galaxies was supposed to be like. A bunch of warzones that can be taken from one side and the recaptured etc. Im thinking of 40k Risk but mixed into a battlegrounds setting. As in you can push the Dark Agnels held territory all the way back to the Rock and eventually, if you get enough men, take it. At wich point you would get gear or something, and then the Dark Angels would start with just the Rock again. I think that would kick a lot of keaster.

Maybe battles could be done through opening up servers (ok I am really bad with technology so if I am using improper terminology I apologize for any confusion or noise in the communication process). Each "server" could have requirements like the specific guild challenged and a point value. Each subscriber with an avatar would have a point cost attributed to their specific avatar which increases as the subscriber advances that avatar through the game. Thus a challenged guild of space marines could determine they will attempt a 5000 pt battle which would allow 50 or so Avatars/side of differing skill levels to take part before the server is at capacity and closes so that the battle can get underway.

For example: Every Subscriber hoping to be a Smurf would start as a Scout. As that avatar takes part in more and more campaigns the avatar gains experience credits to improve the lowly scout into anything from a tac marine, dev, assault troop, vet, terminator, captain, etc etc.

Somehow vehicles would have to be incorporated but I am unsure exactly how to do that ATM. I am thinking the most experienced avatar to enter each server to battle would have a number of points at their disposal to purchase tanks, artillery, etc.

I'm probably mistaken, but the game based on Epic 40k, Final Liberation, was actually a pretty close approximation of the rules. GW doesn't want to make a direct version of the 40k game as a computer game, as they'd then be competing with themselves. While most of us love being able to build and paint our own armies, a lot of people would think all that's unnecessary if you could just play the game on a computer.

I would love to see a scaled down version of 40k, maybe focusing on more herohammer/small scale type skirmishes like in DoW2.

Also at this years E3, they will be releasing actual details about the 40k mmo in the works (rather than just we're making a 40k mmo and it's grimdark), so it will be interesting to see what sort of design/structure aspect they are using.
