Here is a basic NMM tutorial, the way i do squads if need be. It is less complex than most of my other NMM but it is fast and effective.
[Thumb - 002.JPG]
First basecoat in scorched brown

[Thumb - 004.JPG]
Next apply a mixed color of half bestial brown and half scorched brown.

[Thumb - 006.JPG]
Then progressively add small amounts of Bestial brown to the mix and apply witht the feathering technique.

[Thumb - 008.JPG]
Keep adding more amounts of bestial brown to the mix and feather it in, until you get a straight bestial brown color like so.

CONTINUED
[Thumb - 015.JPG]
This is where it gets tricky, Add Golden yellow to the bestial brown, a very small amount. and apply this, feathering from the edges of each basic shape to the middle, causing a reflected look.

[Thumb - 018.JPG]
Progressivley add small amounts of Golden yellow to the mix and feather the same way as above hitting higher and more apparent "glare" points every pass.

[Thumb - 023.JPG]
Use this same strategy until you reach a straight golden yellow that hits mostly reflective points, apparent as above.

[Thumb - 026.JPG]
Next add a very small amount of white to the yellow and hit only the brightest glarea areas. you can see them as above. hit mostly the edges and move into the middle.

[Thumb - 028.JPG]
Then with pure white go back and hit every point inside of the last color with a very small amount, Thin lines of white to show glare.

And there you have it. Without wet blending, blending, or even shadowing. Using just the layering and feathering technique its easy to get a nice effective NMM look. And this took about an hour.

I think that the technique you got is great. have you thought about making it little more predominant? and building up the bestial yellow and white from there? Just an idea.

None the less its great man

O yea, with the advanced NMM i take more steps upon getting to each final highlight. Which means there isnt a jump to any colors its all just slow layering and blending. This way each glare point in the end is a transition and stands out much more. the white then becomes an actual color in the overall appearance, but for this tutorial its mostly just to show the NMM in its basic form. I havent seen may tutorials that show as many steps.

Thanks guys.

@ultra, thanks for the cookie man.

This technique not only works for NMM but just about any and ever color. The feathering technique is a multi use technique that i use. The process is a bit different when painting normal colors, you just dont use a reflective color, you use a high light, ONLY on the very edges of each basic shape, not towards the middle.

NMM is about choosing the right colors and hitting the right spots, its not as difficult as many presume.

I'm not a very advanced painter. What is the feathering technique?

Feathering, is the layering of paint with very watered down colors.

Say you use the brown, when you mix it with the bestial brown thin down the mix until it reaches a consistancy of skim milk. From there when i apply it start where you want the most of that color and slowly work your way inward while feathering out the paint as you go. Sort of fanning it into the previous color. If you look you can see my strokes applied to the model above. They are rather evident until the next color, which will draw away attention and this color is one step up in highlight. The brighter your colors get the further on the models edge you will begin from. This way everytime you feather into the colors underneath you produce a blend without actually blending. You must mix your paints very progressively, dont get too over-zealous and skip highlights, unless you want to hit edges earlier on. The further you get with the highlights the more you will need to concentrate on the edges, that is the key. This way you are not lining a highlight but blending every step up until that point. In the end you produce a highlight, just not in the same way. Each color you add works its way up until that time.

Remember, water your paints down, Mix slowly, if you over mix and go too light you may have messed up. PAINTS DRY DARKER THAN THE EYE SEES! Remember that as well. The more you do it the more you will naturally know what colors will dry like. When you feather remember to also start at edges and make your way inwards. NEVER start in recesses. This will have a bad effect.

Give it some work, i hope this inspires some of you.

Happy painting.

That's a great tutorial....one that will definitely keep in mind. Never thought of using yellow...as weird as it may sound.

Hope you don't mind me inserting this link about feathering. Its an article found in CMON

Have you done Silver NMM? What colors would you use for it?

Thanks again

what you are describing there is blending, the bold bit is what feathering is....

Silver NMM i usually use Shadow gray up to a white. In vallejo color i use dark blue gray to a white.

The one thing I really never see explained in these NMM tutorials? Why you'd want to do it. To me it seems like trying to drive with your feet. Sure, you could probably do it, and people might be impressed, but it seems easier to get better results just doing it the normal way.

alternately, if you're super awesome at NMM, you'd think you'd be x2 super awesome using more traditional techniques.

See, either way if want to paint metal in a professional standard, you will use these same reflective techniques and shading. NMM is a crisp overall look that does in some ways exceed the use of metallics. The work that you put into good NMM is evident, just by the use of the technique and making it well done. I too never understood it, until i entered competitions and saw good NMM. It is used in many areas of art. This is a great way for showcase minis. Consider it a time spent to the end result. This is evident after painting.

Ouze: you can do more tricks with it, to be honest. Some colours are extraordinarily difficult to do well with metallic paints (red is one of the worst culprits, you can get okay red via lots of washes over silver but the shading and highlights are very muted, so shiny red metal is next to impossible). It's also easier to get harmonious highlights when you have multiple colours next to each other.

Also I have never, ever seen good looking chrome in metallic paints.

brush_slip: It's good work, but a little too brown in my opinion. It looks like very nice bronze but not gold. Bronze is harder to find tutorials for than gold so this isn't really a bad thing. I was a little iffy in the middle stages but by the end it pulls together well.

Great marines, have you got a tutorial for your complicated NMM? also with feathering, put simply, do you just use a wet brush to draw out the painted-on highlight or is there really more to it?
