Hey dakka dakka
Do you enjoy the warhammer books? Thats how i got interested in the table top game
If so what are your favorites?
My favorite for fantasy battle is vampire wars and the ones i like almost as much are malekith the sundering and the malus darkblade series
As for 40k my favorite book is storm of iron and the ones i like almost as much are the souldrinkers series and angels of darkness
I also like to go to a fanfiction site once in a while and check out the warhammer stories my favorite
on that site is the toyhammer 40k series by rouge psyker i read the intro and it had me hooked from their i remember the first sentence "because in the near future of the 21st century, there is only boredome"
the site is called www.fanfiction.net if your interested

I liked angels of darkness its about the dark angels(obviously)
A captured fallen angel tells his story to the dark angels chaplain about the secrets of their primarch
interesting stuff its small about 278 pages.
Storm of iron was really good too it was about chaos space marines but they fight the imperial fists which is a space marine chapter of the empire
And the souldrinker books are excellent the soul drinkers fight the empire and chaos.
Also if you want short stories about 40k in general (there are lots of space marine stories in it)
let the galaxy burn is a great read.

It was my first book that I read way before there was an idea for a Black Library Publisher.
That one and the Draco trilogy. the second and third book got kinda crazy, but they were a good read.
The have a bunch of books that are great, though.

Angels of Darkness is pretty interesting
Storm of Iron is really good even though it is mostly about Chaos Space Marines
The first three books of the Horus Heresy are really good
A Thousand Sons
Soul Drinkers books (I think there are four or five of these now)
Ultramarine Novels (by Graham McNeill)
Lord of the Night
Soul Hunter
Crusade for Armageddon and Conquest of Armageddon are really good but I dont think you can still buy them.
Those are all the ones off the top of my head that are really good Space Marine Books
Other good 40k books would be the Eisenhorn Trilogy, Cadian Blood, and most of the Gaunt's Ghost books. Automatically Appended Next Post: ashanu90 wrote:Hey dakka dakka

I have read almost all of them that are out. I did miss a couple of the web order only ones like Space Hulk though. So yes I like most of them. There are some real stinkers though (Looking at you Eldar Prophecy ). I still get all of them when they come out but I do like the big 400 page books less than when most of them were still 250 - 300 pages. It just seems like the bigger books take about 100 pages to get going.

I've only ever read about 9 GW novels. 8 are 40k ones, 1 is a Fantasy novel (Genevieve undead by Kim Newman).
Of those 8, 3 are Dan Abnett's Eisenhorn books and 1 is Mechanicus (the only HH novel I bothered to finish.) the other 4 are Warrior coven by CS Goto, and three other HH novels (so forgettable that the names elude me)
I only have the Eisenhorn, Mechanicus and Genevieve novel on the bookshelf. I gave the HH books away (paid full price for them too. Yes, I took a loss to be rid of them).
I try to steer clear of GW novels. They are mostly BAD. I'd rather read Brian Herbert's Dune prequels than GW (and possibly even Ann Rice again).

Double Eagle is great
I like the first few Horus Heresy books
Heroes of the Space Marines was a decent anthology with some bad mixed in with the good
Currently reading the Ravenor Omnibus. About 2/3 through the first novel and am really digging it.
I think I like the IG/ WH centered ones rather than SMs. Easier by just a bit to identify with the characters even if it is fictional

To put it mildly, if I knew where Dan Abnett lived I would stalk him.
Eisenhorn was phenominal, and got me hooked on him. Read the first Gaunt's Ghosts omnibus after that. Ravenor was a fantastic break between GG omni's. Blew through the Saint, and now I'm in the last story in The Lost.
I don't want to be done with Only in Death. I want it to keep going on forever.

No, always been picky. When you grow up reading Asimov and Clarke and Herbert and Heinlein, you see BL as akin to a 'tv guide'.
I read the Jack Yeovill stuff before there WAS a BL.
Longtime follower of Sturgeon's law. Google it (There, I'm embracing modern internettage. I'm too lazy to tell you.)
I see BL stuff as the teenage boy equivalent of bodice-rippers.
I do like what I've seen of Gav Thorpe's new Eldar trilogy though. Still won't make me want to read the HH series.
I've already read Paradise lost (from which the heresy is most definitely homaged). I don't need to read it again with spehss mehreenz.

I like the Gotrek & Felix Slayer series. They are the only Warhammer books I read. I play WFRP but not WFB, I do play 40K.
As an Ork player it would have been nice to have some Ork perspective books. I'm starting with Space Wolves too so may pick up some Space Wolves novels to get a feel.

Friend reads them all the time. Let me borrow "Storm of Iron", which was pretty good. Then he lent me "Horus Rising" (which I'm currently reading) and let me get 100 pages in before telling me there's something like twelve books on the Horus Heresy and it's not even finished...
So far though between Storm of Iron and Horus Rising I'm finally starting to understand why there are so many space marine players/collectors. There's a ton of books on them. Also being a Tau player it's really opened my eyes to the lore of the imperium as I really only scanned through the lore on the core rulebook.
I would probably agree with Chromedog on Sturgeon's law. Although I still find those two books enjoyable, I almost never read fiction and it's normally something someone else lent to me. I think I've read four fictional books in the past five years and only one of them I picked up myself (1984).

Being a rather voracious reader I've read quite a few (despite having only been involved with the hobby for 5 years or so).
I'm a huge fan of Dan Abnett and love Gaunt's Ghosts (though I must admit that it's losing a bit of its focus so I'd be ok with a definitive end)
Eisenhorn and Ravenor were both excellent series.
As a guard player I've really enjoyed the Cain series (love the addition of humor to the grimdark)
Double Eagle
Rebel Winter
Faith and Fire was ok.
Firewarrior was fething terrible
I'm not a big fan of the Ultramarines series, I got the Omni but only really enjoyed the second book, parts of the first and the first short story. That short story was awesome!
The Space Wolf omni was meh. The first story was merely ok, the second terrible, though the third was pretty damned cool.
Storm of Iron was good
it took it a while to get started, but the Horus Heresy got more interesting as it went on.
I actually really enjoyed Dark Apostle and Dark Disciple as well.
Big fan of the fluff/background books as well like Xenos, Tactica Imperialis, the Sabbat Worlds Crusade, Empire at War and Darkness Rising.
There are others but those are the ones off the top of my head.

I'm still on the first book, Horus Rising. Anyone all the way current on the series? My google-fu says there's twelve books right now. Without giving anything away, how long does it look like the series goes?

"Straight Fething Silver" Tanith first and only
I have a reputation, Modile, a reputation as a fair, honest man who treats his soldiers well and supports them in the face of darkness. Potentially, that reputation makes me soft. It seems I understand failure and forgive it. Some, like Kowle, believe me to be a weak commissar, not prepared to take the action my rank demands. Not prepared to enforce field discipline where I see it failing. I am an Imperial commissar. I will enflame the weak, support the wavering, guide the lost. I will be all things to all men who need me. But I will also punish without hesitation the weak, the incompetent, and the treasonous.
I am a Commissar. I am empowered to deliver justice wherever I see it lacking. I am empowered to punish cowardice. I am granted the gift of total authority to judge, in the name of the Emperor, on the field of combat.

@Rossko
As far as I know Firewarrior is the only Tau centric novel, my only real problem is that they have a single firewarrior that makes rambo (or sly marbo) look like an adorable box of kittens.
I'm pretty sure one of the recent Rogue Trader novels has Damocles Gulf in the title which would imply heavy Tau involvement. Otherwise I'm not sure.

An omnibus is a collection of books put into one giant volume. For example the Gaunt's Ghost Saint omnibus comprises the four books: Honor Guard, Guns of Tanith, Straight Silver and Sabbat Martyr.
Hope that helps.

Didn't Aaron Dembski-Bowden write Helsreach? That's the new Black Templar one, with quite a bit of guardsmen in it. I thought it was OK. That's the only Warhammer book I've read, though.
