In this log ill be cataloguing my progress with various FoW adventures.

I've long been of FoW and saw the lack of rules for moderns as a pretty big gap, the system kinda breaches the space left between ambush alley style platoon level play and CWCs demi battalion style. I began pestering dean wilson, a guy who has written a number of expasions for FoW, to focus his efforts on the contemporary period. He recently released the book, and I have been furiously paitng ever since.

First up the modern soviets

T-72s with 1st gen ERA

T-55s

VDV troops with bmps

The biggest helo ever made - the MI-26. The BMP next to it is 1/100, whereas the helo itself is 1/144

BMP-1

MI-24

Where did you get the trees on the helocopters base?

Welcome to dakka! I've seen your stuff elsewhere (FoW forum maybe?). Loads much faster here and I'm looking forward to seeing more. I especially like the T72s - they are such a good looking tank and the tiling looks great, especially considering the scale.

One quick note too, we have the dakka gallery for free hosting of any wargaming images. If you'd prefer to use that instead of photobucket (there are no limits on images, bandwidth, etc here), then please feel free to do so by clicking the 'gallery' tab at the top of this page.

Check out our new, fully plastic tabletop wargame - Maelstrom's Edge, made by Dakka!

I really like panzer 22, your track painting technique meshes really well with the schurzen from an aesthetic point of view.

I absolutely love your work
And infact you are a big reason why I chose to start playing FOW.
I have my first tanks on order right now I'll be going for the Krauts
Will probably take Afrikakorps colours have 5 Panzer IV's on order,
And my mate is going with Soviets, with T-34's.

Question though, did you use weathering powders to do the tracks ?
I love how it looks

Thanks alot

I use MIG's fixer, take a bunch of powder, mig them into a paste and paint them onto the tracks, then take a bit of paper towel and carefully wipe off the excess to expose some metal/hull to give it a more realistic appearence, its a simple and highly effective techniqe that can be done quickly to a large amount of models.

I highly recommend Russian Earth, as I began this log using European dust, but I find it comes out a bit too red for my liking. Russian earth is much more subdued, but doesnt draw the eye too much from the model that you have spent heaps of time painting!

I've decided to do a bit of a reboot and give my guys a more realistic look , ie no more extreme highlights, heres the first in this new generation - Johnny Lightning M1a1, easily the best 15mm m1 avaliable

"Straight Fething Silver" Tanith first and only

I have a reputation, Modile, a reputation as a fair, honest man who treats his soldiers well and supports them in the face of darkness. Potentially, that reputation makes me soft. It seems I understand failure and forgive it. Some, like Kowle, believe me to be a weak commissar, not prepared to take the action my rank demands. Not prepared to enforce field discipline where I see it failing. I am an Imperial commissar. I will enflame the weak, support the wavering, guide the lost. I will be all things to all men who need me. But I will also punish without hesitation the weak, the incompetent, and the treasonous.
I am a Commissar. I am empowered to deliver justice wherever I see it lacking. I am empowered to punish cowardice. I am granted the gift of total authority to judge, in the name of the Emperor, on the field of combat.

Of all the places I could injure myself in boxing, Murphy's law dictated I had to break the one protected area. Apparently I snapped my 5th metacarpal by throwing a right hook which caused my knuckle to move down between my 4th and 5th, which then had to be reset by a surgeon.

After seeing the new plastic longcoats by wargames factory I really got inspired to retry some guard, so I bought a KV Gigant and 40ked it up

What you think?

I think I saw this concept for the tank on the wargames factory forum, very well done indeed.

The rusting was achieved with just controlled applications of Gryphone sepia around areas where water would collect.

I use Force on Force http://www.ambushalleygames.com/fof.html (better for platoon size engagements + a few tanks) and Flames of war: COLD WAR http://www.lulu.com/product/paperback/cold-war-rules-for-modern-warfare-1960-1990/6244071?productTrackingContext=search_results/search_shelf/center/1 (company - batalion size engagements)

FoF is a dead hard rule system, but theres a weird mix of hyper-detailing in some of the mechnics mixed with homogenizing (weapons don't actually have profiles, but fit into various classified categories).

COLD WAR is a good core to start from, but I found that in the end I redrew the stat tables as some of them didn't make alot of sense, and his rules for penetration are terrible compared to the original Flames of War system. Basically you take the rulebook and cherrypick what works for you.

Nice TOEs avaliable in COLD WAR give you a good structure to base your forces around too.

I'm not much of a treadhead, but my favorite tanks have to be the little adorable ones with the amazingly impractical high profile. They look cuddly, despite being machines made to kill people.

Your 40ked tank looks good. Is there a reason you covered the treads?
