Ok so this is my first real post here on Dakka Dakka and I thought I would share with you a little project I have just started, and yes it's another DIY marine chapter so here goes.

I've been a die hard space marine fan from almost day one but never worked on my own chapter ideas so decided it was high time I put some of my ideas into production so I bring you the Angels Templar. I'll cover the fluff first at least what fluff I have settled on so far. The Angels Templar are a Dark Angel successor chapter that are based around the history of the medieval Knights Templar. They follow the codex astartes with several notable differences influenced mainly by their over zealous desire to eradicate the taint of chaos from humanity. To this end the chapter shuns the use of psykers and has a larger then average contingent of Chaplains. It is therefore not unheard of for high ranking Chaplains to command large forces even on occasion entire companies. The Angel's Templar pride them selves on providing aid to imperial forces when needed rarely ignoring a plea for help believing it do be their duty to help the less fortunate or endangered followers of the emperor. The Angels Templar are known to openly offer aid to the Black Templar crusade providing both military and logistical support to the chapter on many occasions which has resulted in a close alliance between the two chapters.

Chapter colours are white with red trim and detailing some thing like this

I have started work on an honour guard and command squad I have 3 currently in the process of being put together and painted they are a combination of the Dark Angels veteran box set and the command Squad box set just simple kit bashing so far i will attempt some green stuff work on later models, so with out further a do here you are.

This is my banner barer I'm a little unsure about the sword arm I may change it. I was trying to get a little forward motion with this one hence the leg choice

This is my chapter/company champion, I wanted to get him looking as though he was calling out an opponent so i gave him a forward pointing sword which came from the Black Templars emperors champion model which I plan to use the rest of to make my chapter master with once i have worked out a story for him.

And finally a WIP paint job sadly the camera I took these on isn't what I would call great so the work I did on the robes is pretty much not visible hopefully I'll get my camera back from my sister to get some better pictures soon but you can see the basic forming colour scheme. As these guys are robed I will have to get some none robed examples up soon I have plains to paint some simple red crosses onto the lower legs of the standard marines to mimic the knights templar red cross on white background.

So there you go my first steps in chapter creation any comments, criticism, tips or suggestions very gratefully received I'm far from the strongest painter out there so I'll take what ever I can get. To come next will be the rest of the command and honour guard squads and a chapter master based on the emperors champion model current thinking for him is to give him a storm shield and a power weapon for a "counts as" Lysander conversion.

Any way thanks for reading.

I was wandering why it wasn't a Black Templar successor Chapter until I read further on.

Anyway, the backgrounds good and so's the painting so far so 5*!

I did toy with the idea of of Black Templar successors also Blood Angels given the nice new models released for them recently but I had my heart set on the Dark Angel veteran models and the iconography fit perfectly with my ideas so that was really the clincher for me. Thanks for the positive comments

Hmm good question I really hadn't thought about that to be honest. I had planned on working on a character that would be the chapter first Chaplain this may be the perfect opportunity to work in a story for him perhaps he gets the dubious honour of hunting down the fallen as part of his back story.

Its an idea that is done a lot but that's mainly because its a good one. Like the fluff very similar to my own DIY which is going to use the Blood Angels rules but is a Templar styled army.

I think you don't need to worry about the standard bearer, it conveys the movement perfectly well. The tester mini is cool too but I'm just not really sure the Champion conveys what you what it too.

You could be right I think its the shield that's the problem with the champion because it also points forward like the sword I'll toy with the idea of replacing it possibly with a combat blade of some sort.

Hmmm, I think the stance needs switching a little for me. I like the idea off an open guard that you have sort of inviting the enemy in but I think the right foot should be the forward foot. I think that would show a little more of the "You're mine!" attitude you want it to.

I see what you mean i think that would involve switching from the robed version which wouldn't be impossible and I guess more in keeping with the idea of the champion being a close combatant robes would just get in the way I'll have a sleep on it possible attempt some changes in the morning thanks for the pointers.

If you need some more of the parts you used like the champion shoulders let me know I have some spares plus another of the shields if you like. It won't cost anything to send them to you. If you're interested just let me know with a PM and I'll send you the bits.

Just a small update this morning I'll do some more painting later and try to get the first painted example some where near finished to show you. However for now I have a reworked the champion following Lennysmash's suggestion and I'm actually really happy with the new look. I did away with the robed version to better convey the idea that he is issuing a challenge to an enemy. he's not finished yet I think he needs a little more ornamentation to better show his stature I may add a sheathed combat blade and bolt pistol and obviously purity seals. So here he is as he is at the moment please let me know what you think.

The second model is a mock up for my second honour guard model I found a rather nice looking mace in the dark angel veteran set which I think makes a great change from the standard sword or axe you normally see now i just need to find a suitable bolter for him also I will replace his back pack as i gave it to my champion.

As always all C&C very gratefully welcomed and i should have a painting update to post later today.

Cheers List

As promised i have some pictures of a more finalised paint job on my first honour guard and here he is

Just a few bits of touching up on the helmet and a couple of other bits and I'll be happy enough for now with my level of painting skills. It's much easier to see the robe detail on this picture and this one is even better.

The robes defiantly got the most of my attention on this one a started with a base of malachite red which I gave a good wash of devlan mud I had intended to try using a second wash of thraka green but forgot to pick up a pot of it when I was at my local workshop. However I'm happy with the devlan mud wash which I then highlighted back up with gore red, blood red and finally blazing orange. I used the same scheme for the shoulder trims I had originally intended to make the red detailing a lighter colour but the final result I think works very well the white breaks up the large amounts of red well and overall I'm happy with the look.

My next model will be the Champion which I have added some detailing to in the form of a purity seal and a holstered bolt pistol and small combat blade which can be seen below.

I dry fitted the arms and the new details fit nicely and aren't obscured by the arms or weapons at all so will add some much needed finishing touches when pained. I'll be starting work on him this evening so hopefully I'll have some WIP pictures tomorrow morning for his paint job the lack of robes should make it considerably different to the first honour guard and will be a basis for my rank and file marines that will come later.

Hope you enjoy the small update and again all comments and criticism very welcome.

Cheers list

The newer Champion looks great, I think it displays more of the gladiatorial challenge you were going for.

"The time for honouring yourself is at an end" and charge! Voilà one dead enemy leader, good stuff.

Hi all i started work on my champion last night I thought I would show you how he is shaping up I tried dry brushing the white on with this guy so its not as solid as the first honour guard but overall I really like the effect the armour details are much easier to see and the white is a lot more subdued. The red is straight malachite red with a light devlan mud wash over it was a bit too bright for my liking painted over the white so I figured a wash would help the highlights stand out more when I get around to them. Other then that all i have done is the armour joints which are adeptus battlegrey with a badab black wash. So here he is so far hope you like

I'll get some more work done on him this evening after work so I'll try to get some more of him tonight.

Cheers List.

Just a very small update today I didn't get any work done last night I just felt like being a bit lazy after work in all honesty. However I got an hour in this morning and did some work on the champion mainly just on the metal and started some basic highlights on the red also the eyes got some attention but my photography really doesn't do them justice so here he is as he stands now

As it's a very small update I thought I would add a couple of pictures of some bits I completed not too long ago. Fist off is my Damned Legion Sargent I always hated painting bone so this guy was always going to be an up hill struggle for me but I was over the moon with the final product. The other main aspect for me was the flame effect which i was really happy with untill the manager of my local work shop pointed out to me that fire works in the opposite way to the way I painted it meaning I should start with the lighter colour at the base of the flame not the top. Oh well I like it as it is so wont be changing it just yet.

And finally I thought I would show you my version of Pedro Kantor painted up to join my Imperial Fists. I originally got him simply because i love the model I had no plans to replace Lysander with him but I swiftly followed him up with a sternguard squad which I eventually will equip with a drop pod I think just incase I do decide to play him. So here he is one of my very favourite models to date I hope you enjoy

FYI that's a black Legion helmet on his base a good friend of mine is currently working on a Black Legion army and I know he's put some Imperial Fist helmets into his trophy detailing so i thought i would return the favour . Any way that's it for now I wont get any thing else done till tomorrow night at the earliest due to work and stuff so i'll try to get another small update late tomorrow.

Cheers List

Liking it a lot there Listrel. You should have a go at sculting those crosses to the greaves that would look awesome. There is a fine example in a recent True-scale templar blog on this forum.

Have you tried ogryn flesh as a wash too for shading, it goes very well with the reds and then baal to bring it back to the overall redish colour.

I mean just look at the recent bumbling acts of marketing childishness we've seen in just the past year! Iron Man 2. All the trailers, previews, interviews, Comi-Con panels, tie-ins with burger joints and whatnot. None of that should have happened. The real way to market a movie like Iron Man 2 is to not tell anyone you're making it until a week before its release and then BAM, you hit 'em with the movie. You get everyone to sign NDA's that are punishable by forfeiture of all the person's assets and/or the death penalty, you hire hitmen to kill journalists that sneak in to take photos, you threaten local towns with forced sterilisation should they blab that something's filming in their town, and then then you say nothing about the movie at all and, in fact, even go so far as to deny you're making it.
Avatar. Another great example. All that hype about it being the most expensive movie ever made, the genius of the special effects, and so on. James Cameron should have denied he ever intended to make a movie after Titanic and then zzzzzzzzaaaaaaappp, Avatar - Realease Date - 1 week from now!
That's the real way to market. None of this preview/trailer/hype bull gak. You say nothing, you deny everything, and you leave everyone guessing as to what the hell you're doing until you physically are no longer able to.
Think of just how much money Avatar and Iron Man 2 could have made if we'd never known they existed until they were already in theatres? Hundreds more. Possibly even hundreds of billions more. Why is GW the only one who gets this?

Thanks for the comments guys, sadly I haven't had chance to get any work done this evening so haven't got an update for you tonight. Lennysmash no I haven't worked with ogryn flesh at all I'll have to swing by my local work shop in the week and give it a try as for then sculpting the crosses I'm going to have to jump in the deep end with the green stuff so I'll have to give that a try to. I did pick up a pot of Thraka green this week end to use on the shading for the red robes so i'll post some pictures of how that comes out in the week.
