I'm really bored at my fellow gamers in my FLGS. It seems that everyone plays as ultramarines with gunline tactic. The pile of empty ultramarine blue -pots is just sickening. Shouldn't the store run out of paint soon or is there some sort of secret tap that leads to Jervis'es blue lair. How are other colors in your FLGS or is it just me fighting against the blue with my purple csm and green orks.

Every time I hear "in my opinion" or "just my opinion" makes me want to strangle a puppy. People use their opinions as a shield that other poeple can't critisize and that is bs.

If you can't defend or won't defend your opinion then that "opinion" is bs. Stop trying to tip-toe and defend what you believe in.

Six mistakes mankind keeps making century after century: Believing that personal gain is made by crushing others; Worrying about things that cannot be changed or corrected; Insisting that a thing is impossible because we cannot accomplish it; Refusing to set aside trivial preferences; Neglecting development and refinement of the mind; Attempting to compel others to believe and live as we do

I made the mistake of painting my DIY "Star Owls" in blue with orange and white accents, so they look like Ultramarines, but not nearly as sharp.

Seems every new player always ends up with that. Sucks, as that's an ugly shade of blue.

I use a much darker shade of blue (similar to navy blue) for my Sisters. It looks better than Ultramarines Blue.

My marines are actually Vallejo "intense blue," but yeah, I'm doing my high elves in a more "prussian blue" look.

Ultramarines Blue is just too bright. I only use it for the headdress banding on Thousand Sons.

Really dark Regal Blue base for armour, washed with Blue Ink and highlighted with Enchanted Blue. I love it.

There's only 1 Ultramarines player at my FLGS (He changed to them from Necrons), but he's not finished painting his army.

I use Regal Blue as the base for my guard army, and also for the trim on my marines. It works pretty well.

Whoa whoa whoa...

My Crimson Fists respectfully disagree with the title of your thread. Theyz 'ardcore killas in blue! You can't mistake them for 'Smurfs though, except for that first squad that didn't get the right basecoat and wash, but that's my fault not theirs.

I never saw the allure of UM's, but when I started back in 2nd ed, it was Angels of Death that were all the rage. I had to be different even then, painting my Blood Angels successors in ivory with red, gold, and purple trim.

I don't get why they're called smurfs. Are smurfs 8 foot-tall, armour-clad, uber-strong supersoldiers armed with rapid fire granade launchers? Well, yes, they are but- THAT'S NOT THE POINT!

There are 3 Ultramarines players at my FLGS. I can't actually say the place is running out of blue paint though since all three of them are still working on getting their armies painted. The one young chap is coming along pretty well. The second one kind of alternates between painting a few different armies. The last one is pretty much bare metal and plastic all the way.

Really, there aren't that many straight Space Marine players at my FLGS. They're tied with Blood Angels as the second most popular army (and oddly enough, the new book hasn't changed that measurement), but Chaos Space Marines of the various shapes and sizes are hands down the most popular army where I play.

I see a lot more Space Wolves and Blood Angels than Ultrasmurfs, and the majority of the armies that I've seen using the Vanilla Codex are of Salamanders affiliation. Me, I'm like Felix. Gotta have them White Scars.

I know I won't make any friends by saying this, but I personally can't stand Ultramarines. Almost everything about them bugs me. I like the newer paint scheme a little better, but that terrible blue, red bolters, yellow too? An upside down Omega to make a "U" for Ultramarines? *insert goofy laugh* How creative... I know it is the flagship chapter of the flagship army for 40k, but I can't for the life of me understand how it got that way... I'm just glad that the days of garish 2nd edition colors and paint jobs are over. As I said before, I do however like the look of the new Ultramarines in the new books.

I find most SM colours not very intimidating. they are just to bright to really.

To think these 8ft tall soldiers are scary? More like steroid inhanced Power Rangers to me.

The only ones I see as cool are the dark colour ones like Dark Angels,Black templers,Raven guard, etc.

I got my brothers space marine army when he moved on to orks. I painted mine blazing orange, ultramarines and their blue color is just too common, so it becomes boring.

I'm tired of Ultrahate. If you were a Blood Angels player, and that was GW's basic army, how would you like it if everyone was talking smack about your choice?

It wasn't always that way. Alot of it has to do with the way GW had marketed marines.

In RT, Crimson Fists got the book cover art and some great color illustrations, though there were several other chapters that got exposure. I was just looking into the game at that time (didn't start til 2nd ed), but I remember being impressed by the Blood Angel picture on the yellow Compendium book.

In 2nd edition, the blood angels got alot of play because they had front billing on the box set box and on many of the cardboard inner boxes that miniatures came packaged in. They were what people associated marines with. If you find a second hand 2nd edition box set, it's likely that someone has started painting the marines red. However, it wasn't long before Blue began it's ascent. Asside from space wolves (there were alot of 2nd edition wolf players) Blusies were the only SM army with thier own dedicated codex (BA and DA had to share), so they were the model for a "basic" marine army, though they didn't yet have alot of dedicated sculpts.

I do remember a fair number of black Templar players in Third edition as BT had the box cover, but UM's were on the rise, and by 4th edition it was Blues-o-mania. UltraMarines had the box art for 4th and 5th, and GW started including a few more Ultramarine-specific charachters in their metal lines. At this point, Ultras have had two gamebox art spots in a row, and nearly ever marine model on the GW web-store is painted to the colors of a codex-specific army, so those not interested in DA, BA or SW, see almost nothing but.... Blue.

Funny I see smurfs so rarely that I was happy to play against one of them in a tournament.

I see alot more Nids and Blood Angels than Smurfs..and way way too many orcs.
