[June 8, 2010] (Hillside, NJ) – WizKids/NECA and CBS Consumer Products today announced that they have entered into an agreement wherein WizKids/NECA will create HeroClix branded miniature games to be sold both physically and digitally, set in the Star Trek universe, including all of the Star Trek television shows and Star Trek feature films.

“Star Trek changed the way people think about the future,” said WizKids/NECA President Lax Chandra. “We are thrilled at the opportunity to marry our innovative game design and exceptional miniatures with the incredibly rich Star Trek franchise. We believe HeroClix and the Star Trek Universe are ideally suited for cooperative gaming and table top miniature simulation and will speak to gamers in a new and compelling way.”

The first WizKids/NECA Star Trek game will release around Christmas, 2010 with additional expansions to follow.

This game will only be good if it has tribbles.

I am a veteran of the Clix games. I played Mageknight, Heroclix and Mechwarrior for quite a few years. And believe me when I say that those games went down the drain fast. It should not be allowed to taint the awesomeness of the Star Trek Universe.

My initial feeling is this is a bad idea. I don't think star trek lends itself to the type of games people want to make it into. Star Trek is too loaded with other ideas that go beyond blowing each other up.

Most often the "reality" of the setting makes personnel combat rather limited compared to the comic book Hero-clix. It doesn't matter how strong, smart, or fast you are, disintigration is one hit death. No matter what you'll be stuck with a bit of a forced hit point system to differentiate sides and to draw out games beyond the first two turns. Also with every starfleet officer carrying the same weapon, all their ranged attacks are going to be equally lethal unless forced through inconsistency. Or you'll end up with "Sulu with Sword", "Worf with ba't'leth" and "Shirtless Kirk with Rock". That last one automatically stuns all female models.

That said, I think a ship based game makes more sense. The down side to that is, games like this, to push more product become all about larger and larger fleet action. While the setting dictates fleets of 4 or 5 ships, most of the time. I hope they try to differentiate this attempt from the star wars game.

I'm hopeful, but I have such doubts.

I only hope I'm opening a booster hoping to get a rare Galaxy-X class mini

and not the rare Neelix mini in Security Uniform.

Meaning I hope it is ship based and not ground based.

Ship based could appeal to me. Star Fleet Battles ate way too much of my life, but if some of the same ideas could be someone automated as "clicks", it might lure me into the hobby. Although, I loved battletech too, but never made the leap to clicks.

There better be a way to "reverse the polarity" in this game.. it solves almost every dilemma in star trek

As a Heroclix expansion, I would expect it to be an ground-based game, rather than ship battles.

I'm interested in seeing what they come up with. Even if just to have a game of 'NewKirk' vs 'Original Kirk'...

Make it ship-based, buy the (dying?) Star Wars Miniatures rights from Wizards/Hasbro, make a Star Wars Ships heroclix, profit. It's everyone's dream to have Star Trek vs Star Wars.

I can see it now...
A kid excitedly runs into his local gaming store, plopping down the money he earned from mowing lawns the week before onto the counter. "I'll have a box of the new Star Trek clix game, please". Immediately, he tears the box open hoping to see his hero Kirk, or at least that Priceline guy, tumble out. "Its...full of Red Shirts. They don't even have dials." At this point he decides that his new heroes are those Jersey Shore kids and spends his next weeks earnings on tanner and Ed Hardy shirts or whatever the hell those kids wear, and our young friend never has another original thought again.

I suspect that a ship-based game (given that the announcement says that this one is covering all the series') would run into some licensing conflicts with Starfleet Battles.

I'd be interested in both tbh, but the idea of Romulans V's Klingons.
With Sela, Lursa, B'etor on one side and Worf, Kurn and Martok on the other would be a lot of fun.

Well in my mind anyways.

lawyers are clever enough to make prepainted clicky games a seperate license than unpainted pen and paper. Look at how LoTR had a slidy game, a mini game AND minis based on the books.

I too hope for a ship game.

Yeah, it's certainly possible... but would come down to the terms of SFB's licence. I know they're allowed to work in the original series timeline, and they're allowed to develop new material within that setting... but have no idea if that original series access is exclusive.

Will this be an aweful game? That question can be answered best by another question. Is Jordan Weiseman still part of the company?

If this is a prepainted ship only combat clix system, I'm interested. If its construcacard crap then it is just another shovel of dirt on the coffin of Wizkids.

Hey guys...

One of the Big Wigs in Neca/Wizkids posted this in response to people wanting to know about the licenses

"There will be a number of games - Spaceship based HeroClix combat game, not compatible with Marvel & DC figures & a self contained co-operative game with HeroClix elements through out."
http://www.hcrealms.com/forum/showthread.php?t=279363 post number 4

That being said, if you left heroclix before or at the end of the original Wizkids run, then you missed out. The last two sets have been nothing but awesome, with much improved paint jobs, rules, and even a reduction of cardboard elements in most of the games.

That being said I am huge WK nut, and have played most of their games. This one will be no different
