Watching North Korea hold off Brazil with defensive efficiency that puts Germany to shame. Anybody else rooting for the PDR?

Don't worry, Brazil has something North Korea doesn't.

Food.

Yeah, I'm rooting for the North Koreans. I feel kind of sorry for them in the same way I would a bad tempered, starving stray dog.

God why? They represent a dictatorship that has literally killed millions of its own people. They should be shunned.

I'm with Brazil the whole 100 miles of it, though i'm starting to change my mind watching NK hold them off like they did

@Frazz : Dude, it's about football, not dictatorship or killing their own people. Though if it were, i'd totally be with you on that

Politics aside as a neuteral this is a great match to watch, nobody was expecting North Korea to hold their own, I think most were forseeing Brazil to be about 5-0 up by now. Regardless of who wins given the first half performance the North Koreans can hold their heads high going on to the next game.

They're probably worried about keeping their heads at all.

Yeah, damn those football players that are quite clearly members of the secret police back home...

As for the game, I was actually bored (and interested) enough to watch it... almost made me want to like football, almost...

Hmm... Brazil 2 Korea PDR 1. It's a result, but not really one you can samba to

I was of course not rooting for North Korea as a political state. I don't know about sport in the US, but in the UK there is a tendency for neutrals to root for the underdog, particularly when big teams who win everything are involved e.g. Manchester United, Barcelona, Brasil

Hats off to those Chinese actors that NK paid to dress up as NK fans and root for them.

They were a great investment by NK.

Damn, NK did pretty well.

My brother and I joked (though in retrospect it's probably the truth!) that the NK defense was told that if they did well then their families would be spared and they would get food.

Once again the Western method of motivation has been proven wrong. Positive encouragement such as wealth and fame produce mediocre players in comparison to the proven Eastern methods of a lifetime of punishment and eternal shame.

I'm sure the North Koreans are celebrating their triumph over (ie not getting stomped by) Brazil.

Are you being sarcastic or do you not know the score?

Have you seen Rocky or how the Cold War turned out?

Or the state of Cuba, Russia, and North Korea in general?

So you’re actually cheering against a country because of the suffering of its own people. That’s a pretty interesting piece of psychology. Either that or you’re unaware of the difference between the political hierarchy of North Korea and their football team.

I wasn’t sure who I wanted to see win. On the one hand it would have been nice for someone to lose by more than Australia did. On the other hand upsets are fun, and an upset like North Korea would have been one of the biggest I’d ever seen. Also, I’ve never liked Brazilian football.

2-1 achieved none of that.

“We may observe that the government in a civilized country is much more expensive than in a barbarous one; and when we say that one government is more expensive than another, it is the same as if we said that that one country is farther advanced in improvement than another. To say that the government is expensive and the people not oppressed is to say that the people are rich.”

Having been heavily involved in many different sports for the past 15 years I can tell you with great certainty that, as far as athletics are concerned, it very much is not. Self motivation will get most people to their basic limits, but very few people are capable of pushing those limits without some form of moral support or collective motivation.

I agree it helps, it can make a great combo, but it isn't as singularly important as self motivation.

No one quits smoking or drinking without a self determining desire to quit.
Micheal Jordan didn't become great because he was pushed, he did it cause he was the first in the gym and the last one out, because he wanted to be the best.

Sure, but dogma was pointing out the value of esprit de corp. I've been in sporting teams were individuals work much harder and will sacrifice their own game because of the pride they have in being part of that team.

I mean, I agree with you that terror is no way to get people acting properly, but personal achievement is not the only alternative.

That's a really odd thing to make up.

And often times determination can be rooted in commitment to others, or a group of others.

Having not seen Michael Jordan train, or discussed his motivation with him, I can't comment on the force behind his performance.

Of course I do. They were celebrating their 6-0 victory in Pyongyang last night thanks to a double hat trick from their glorious leader Kim Jong Il!
