How do you identify with the 40k armies you collect or play? Why do you like your favorite armies?

So many of GW's models are incredible sculpts and I want to own every single one, but for some reason I almost exclusively buy humans. I love the look of Chaos Marines and Daemons, but I just can't force myself to the dark side and commit to the forces of Chaos. I couldn't ever play the bad guys (especially the environmentally disastrous bugs or nihilist robots) and want to win a game. Perhaps with almost 20 years of being government issue myself, I personify to strongly with the toys I play with, but I can't help wanting the little flashlight toting humans with no ability to change their miserable "mon-key" lives to achieve victory. I can't bear battle reports, youtube videos, or AARs where the humies lose. Maybe I'm a Xenophobe racist, despite painting the occasional Xeno/heretic/mutant I enjoy mankind the most.

I know some of us pick armies to win games or tournaments, I want to know what makes you really pick an army. Especially you evil players (Necrons, bugs, Chaos, Daemons, Orks), how do personify with your evil armies?

I identify with the Necrons because I just sympathize with soulless mass-murdering machines more ancient than the starts themselves. It's so hard to find people who've got a life story you can relate to.

I identify with IG because in Apocalypse, the infantry can ride tanks.

Nothing's more bad than that.

In all seriousness, though, I love massive explosions, and IG's tanks and Artillery bring them to me.

Eye of Terror... I think

My three armies relate to not only elements of my personality but also my own personal life philosphies.

Emperors Children- At my best I try to perfect myself every day, at my worse I'm very much a hedonist that once nothing more out of life than the pursuit of the ultamate rush or high. Sex, drugs, rock, and warfare in the grimdark future....whats not awsome about that?

Eldar- At my best im very analitical and insightful, I sometimes help others for for no reason and have a stong quest for knowledge. At my worste im manipulative and arrogant, I can use others to my advatage and am sometimes blinded by my own self importance. Also love the underdog theme and the models

Flesh Tearers- At my best I live by a code of pride and honor, Love the idea of helping for a good cause. At my worste I can be very violent when angered and have a strong sense that only the strongest deserve to live outlook on the world. Only loyalist army I could bring myself to play, law of the jungle mentality and what space marines are more many than a bunch of dinosaur hunters?

These are my armies this is why I play them...

G'day All,

Baconfat, I know what you mean. I'm partial to a few other armies as well, mostly Orks because they look cool, but I am a diehard imperial player and always will be. I love my guard like they were my own plastic children, and I cry a little tear inside every time one of them dies.

Needless to say, I cry a lot...and not just when lovemak...

The other thing I do with my local gaming group is before each game each player secretly nominates one soldier in thier force (has to be troops selection) and marks it with a little counter, hidden on the bottom of the base.

This model is you...or me...whatever...eitherway, it represents you personally, and as an additional objective, you have to try your best to keep yourself alive.

The real twist of course is that if you try to keep that unit obviously out of danger then your opponent knows which one to shoot to kill 'you'.

Then, at the end of the game, if you killed 'me' then you get to twist the head off the model and mount it on your wall!

Keeps things more interesting that way, or at least more competitive!

I've got three ork heads versus, two lost, mounted on my fridge alongside my flatmates ones!

That head thing is so sadistic...it just might work...

Anyways, I have my Dark Angels because I love having an army that just wont die, my Nids because they die, and my Tau because they are wussies with really big guns, all three of which I do between characters on CPU rpg's.

Oh man, its great...I started it because my flatemate, the Ork player, made a joke about it once and I thought, no, this could be a really good way to inspire him too win. At first he just read his own codex, and was slow to pick up the rules.

He's read the rulebook and my codexes a few times now...he even hides his own codex in his room because he doesnt want me to know his army now!

That's why I bought one of my own that I hide in my room!

We actually don't twist heads off anymore, we just paint one up for the opponent after each loss. Mainly because twisting off the heads is a real pain when you use non GW glue...so, the good stuff. The rule is, its the next thing you paint after you lose!

Flawless Host

Sex, drugs and rock and roll. Oh and killing people just with screams

Imperial Guard.
In a universe of super humans, space elves and green buff englishmen. the army that has you a gun. and your wits. Why not?

And the ablity to field convicts as soldiers? Yes!

Dark Eldar.
Not so much the fluff as playing a glass hammer, it seemed like a cool play style. I still actually have the models I used.

My second Chaos Marine army. Never even got a model painted. They were gonna be Iron Warriors, but the lack of back up for that army in the current book killed my interest.

Now.

Space Wolves, I like the army that's strength is heros. Call me conformist and shallow. But I like a group of bold outspoken leaders of men, kicking ass. My symbol also used to be a wolf skull.

And their space viking werewolves? Only sweetens the deal.

I kind of identify with Orks. They are a fighting race that do what they want to do in the name of glory and fun. But they also have a Proud Warrior Race thing as well, as they don't fight to hurt other, but simply to fight.

Want to help support my plastic addiction? I sell stories about humans fighting to survive in a space age frontier.

I love my CSM - they are an army which has an interesting background, far more interesting than any SM army I feel as they are actually more human.

I have my IG, which I think are pretty cool. Their background is of being akin to the East India Trading Company - but in space - crossed with Stargate. Though I may change some of them to be WWI/II style trench soldiers - I will be converting all my tanks to such a theme anyway.

My Orks are pretty fun, but I never use them and am currently trading them in the swap shop if anyone is interested. They were my first army - I split the starter set with my brother many moons ago and chose the Orks (they were the Space Orks back then ).

the Imperial Guard because... well, you know why!

and the Inquisitors because they see so many more layers of an otherwise bleak place. especially those few lucky Inquisitors that get to muck about in a system that's a bit low on people of thier trade so they can go everywhere and do whatever they want. of course, what they 'want' is to be out hunting the aliens, the mutants and the heretics.

Pretty much

In RPGs I usually play a Barbarian, not too bright but I hit things for lots of damage, like an Ork
I love the Ork ramshackle tech. Heck, my 35 year old Land Rover is pretty much an Ork vehicle.
And yes, Orks are the comedy army, and I like to keep games light-hearted.

I've also started with a few Space Wolves because I wanted a Space Marine army. I like that the Space Wolves are pretty much the bad boys of the Space Marines. And with my long hair and beard I look more like a Space Wolf than any other chapter.

Apologies for talking positively about games I enjoy.

I play Tau because I like the clean, elegant designs of their vehicles and battlesuits. I love their design, their FW armour looks like Samurai armour. I like their playstyles (I use Mech Tau, dedicated to extreme maneuvers and rapid hit and runs). They are in a way kind of 'Good Guys', but not too much.

I was going to start Orks. They are hilarious in almost everyway, even if sometimes its really dark humour.

I really love action heroes standing tall amongst tons of other schmoes simply there to make them look good. This is why I built an Imperial Guard army around Sergeant Harker, Sergeant Bastonne (mine is modeled after Apone from Aliens) Colonel Iron Hand Straken, and of course Sly Marbo - or in my case, Duke Nukem.

I started up Space Wolves because they looked pretty metal, and I was a lot more into heavy metal than I am now. Big angry vikings in space is still a good enough cause though.

I got Orks because I already had em from Black Reach, and I figured it was a big change from Marines.

I play nids.

The thing we have in common, is we both like eating xD

(Although I'm a vegetarian, so actually wait, what? maybe my nids are scouring the galaxy on the look out for humus in actual fact xD)

In all seriousness, I started my army because I like the narrative created in battle, the stories of last ditched efforts of the defenders before they are devoured alive by my horde (if all goes to plan)

I love that impending feeling of doom that sinks into my opponent's stomach and dries his throat. I love to watch my opponents s**t bricks when the swarm starts hurtling towards them (I roll with 6 troop choices in 1'500pts) and s**t an even bigger one every time the mawloc pops out the ground~

My regular opponent is my brother and his Iron Warriors, the same army (although the basilisk is now gone) that he used to roll with in 3rd edition and would destroy my space marine army week in week out.

I guess I play nids then for the satisfaction of sweet succulent revenge~

Any mech that can take a pile of scrap, and get it to run, well you just have to love it.

Its hard to be awesome, when your playing with little plastic men.

IG- Well apart of remind me my past duty in the army, they are the people who you can see everywhere, everyday, common people, not to mention thei crappy-looking tanks only to surpass by the orks, with their bunch of strange specialists, "counseilors" "BLAM!", and guys who can look straigth the warp, an many weird people, and a thing that always works with me, guns...a lot of guns. Just funny, funny as mankind can be.

SPESS MAHREEEENS- Well, i like their general look, it reminds me the typical 80's Sci-fi look a bit modernized but without losing their original shape, fluff on them are really varied among the looooooooooots of chapters, so you can make them be everything, to ultra-cool "ejem!" guys to beer swallowing barbarian (oh yeah!) just make your colour paint, and make your mind fly with what you can imagine for fluff!

and last but not least, SM and IG are armies that GW makes sure they still actualized
