Subject: Knight space marines. vet heavy(NEW PICS pg 4)
|
 |
Boom! Leman Russ Commander
|
this is my first PM blog so bare with me. please.
I am making a vet heavy space marine army in yellow colors.
the idea is having lots of vanguard vets and sternguard vets, the sternguard vets would be the "normal marines" taking the tac squads but will be modeled as vets. i would use The CF chapter master as a countas to make them count as scoring. Scouts will take up the troop slots. i want to model the scouts as knights, using a WHFB footsoldier as the base with 40k weapons, i would also like to use scout bikes with knight like figures to have a more knightly theme. i dont want the marines to look too knightly, the idea being this chapter gets its troops from a knightly mad max type of world so the marines train these rag-tag mad max knights into marines which is when they get the power armor and can rise above the low tech gear of their world.
any ideas would be greatly looked for. either fluff or modeling. i have a vanguard vet squad glued and plan on painting it soon and i will post pics. i was going to prime them white and then base them blazing orange, drybrushing white and then glazing with yellow ink, but i was recommended to prime white and wash golden yellow and paint golden yellow before i glaze them with griffin wash and then highlight golden yellow. i am going to try this out and see what comes from it.
thanks for the feedback in advance!!

Try takeing the heads from the whfb "Bretonnian Knights Errant / Knights of the Realm" cutting off some of the stag horns and crazy eagle things and glueing them to a SM body.
You can buy the heads off of ebay, I know because I recently ordered some myself to add a more knightly look to my BT army.

cool thanks. i play to use pedro, will post pics when my first unit is painted.
i may use those knight heads, i need to find a WHFB foottroop that is good for knightly scouts. any ideas? i was thinking dark elves or high elves. i dont likie the empire guys too much save the expensive ones like greatswords but those dont seem very good for my army due to money and how few guys come in the set. any ideas?

Head over to the GW site and look through the bits they have for the respective armies. Might save you $$ if you are looking for just some shileds or helms for later conversions.

First thing you need is a steady surface like a table or desk. Second thing you need is a proper lighting setup. Sunlight is superior!
The quality of your camera is actually not nearly as important as those two factors.

Sageheart from the photos the yellow seems to be solid and consistent, but as Fafnir has already pointed out setting the model down on a table or such will help with the quality of the photo. Another fact to remember is not to clutter the shot, so placing the model on a piece of paper will help tremendously.
As to the concept great idea and really look forward to your idea developing over time. Keep it up

Thanks so much for the feedback. i will try to uncluter the photos for the next shots. with my gf camera we tried putting a single color book behind the model to get a plain color. it cameout better.
i like the new high elf starter set models but dont know how customizeable they'll be. i would need them to hold bolters and shotguns. i may break up my old knight models that still lie unpainted and use those bodies to make the biker scouts (which i notice arent in many SM lists so must be bad....) and still look into what bodies to use for the oother scouts. keep you updated should be able to take better pictures of this squad and maybe some work in progress of the scout bikers or more marines.
here are the best images from my gf camera.

Thin down your paints more, and try to make the detail "sharper" by cleaning them up. I know covering up purple that goes over the edges with yellow may be a bit hard, but it will make the look much cleaner looking. Also picking out more details will add more "realism". Id start with things like the air intakes on the jump packs, wires on their joints (and the joints themselves).
Looks like you have some good ideas in your head, you just need practice to put them into the models.

Hey SuperDoucheGuy, you should find your way to another thread where arses are welcome.
Maybe I spoke too soon, I see that you are a new user and maybe you don't know that its supposed to be Constructive criticism not just beind a jerk. The idea is to help people improve their skills and have fun, not to discourage people from posting or enjoying the hobby we all love. Isn't that the point of Dakka?

+1 on that tony_nids_10.
SuperNiceGuy I think you may need think a little before you speak. Firstly the models are fairly good and this chap is starting with arguably the hardest colour in the palette and secondly nobody but an imbecile thinks that Parkinson's is a funny affliction.
As said already you're a new user so we'll cut you some slack, but maybe you should read up on dakka's conduct policy before you post again.

thank you everyone.
i can thin my paints, i did on the first layers of yellow, almost too much making them into washes. but thelast layer i didnt and i can tell it is noticeable.
@ Whalemusic360 when i look at the pics now i see the purple goes into the yellow a bit and i should go over and fix those things. i also haven't spent time on all the vents, ill go over them and take better pics with my friend's camera.
im getting a tac set soon to work on a few sternguard vets as well as models for the marine swap thread. post pics by sunday.

Cool, glad to hear you didnt get yelled off of the PM blogs. Taking pics really makes any flaws noticable, even if you dont see it in person.
The only other advice I would venture is to limit your pallete more. You've got alot of bright colors for add ons and what not. I'd stick with one (purple) and maybe the green for power weapons and loose the blues and greens on extra things.

Nice idea, good luck with the yellow, makes me cringe just thinking about painting it.
Just a few tips for pics, use a white background, always try to use sunlight over artificial sunlight, use the macro setting on your camera (the little flower symbol) and disable the flash, if your using one.
I also think a darker purple would offset the yellow a bit nicer than the lighter shade your currently using.
Good Luck!

@ whatemusic- i didn't think using less colors would be a good idea but that makes sense, all the different colors makes the model lose focus. huh. i think you may be right. keep the purple and yellow as the armor, and green for power weapons (maybe blue) and try to use blacks and browns and dull colors for the other parts? there has to be something to paint the shields and other such things but maybe if they are more passive colors they would be bettter fit for the model?
i was looking at dark elf models and i was thinking the corsairs to be an idea for the scouts, they look a little evil to be knights but the models look cool and the weapon layouts look to be easier to place shotguns and bolters on than with the highelf and dark elf spearmen who are really attached to that spear.
yet again i havent really looked at dark elf spearman, the fact that i can give them crossbows may mean i can just swap out the crossbow for a bolter.
and thanks model collector, i really need to get the pics perfected Automatically Appended Next Post: there are the warrior of chaos models and they look awesome but the way the hands are places leads to little customization which i dont like.

Irony and Ass-Holeity aside, , they're looking pretty damn decent! To avoid having to do Yellow Touch-Ups, I'd paint the Purple, and any Blacks or Browns you may have, before the Yellow. This way, if you go over the Purple with the Yellow, it'll only take a quick dab of paint to fix, and not several layers!
Keep it up.
