thank you.

i went over the yellow with a waterdown bad moon yellow to make the yellow look less brownish. i also painted some things greys instead of blue.

looking good.

If you are still looking for knight head things, and don't want to use whfb heads, you could try buying just the BT heads from the BT upgrade kit off of ebay. They are slightly more knightly looking than normal marine heads.

Also you can buy just the whfb heads seperate (from the rest of the kit) on ebay, usually for around 5 bucks with shipping. Not sure if I clearly stated that before

The yellow does not look all that bad truthfully. Have you tried Ilyaden foundation paint? Its supposed to be ridicuilous.

P.S. I know I shouldn't encourage it but SuperNiceGuy's comment, paired with his ironic name produced a few lulz.

haha yea ithought superniceguy's comment was funny as well

i havent tried Ilyaden foundation paint, is it good?

i was thinking of looking up BT heads, but i thougght it would be too expensive for just a few heads and a bunch of weapons i would have to file symbols off of. on ebay it could be cheaper. i should look into that def.

i would like to look into men at army conversions, by cuting the attached arms off and inculding cadian arms with bolters and shotguns and other such weapons, do you guys think that would look good?

i have some pics to put up too!!
my firend took some last night for me!

I really think that your painting is coming along nicely. I cant even begin to fathom trying to paint anything yellow. What a massive undertaking. I'll stick to black

Iyadan darksun is a good colour but a little flat for my tastes, I feel it needs highlights to really make it pop. One way of cheating on a good consistent base coat would be to use a coloured primer. Army painter is my choice of undercoat but being a lucky so-and-so living in the states you have a lot more choices. I would ask some of our American brethren if it was a path you may consider.....

And kudos on the new and improved pictures, you've got the key ingredients for a successful blog, a passion to learn and an ability to listen. Keep up the good work

thanks tons lennysmash, what would an army painter be? would a yellow primer work do you think, that may be something to try since my models end up all yellow after the primer since i use a yellow wash over the white primer and it tends to color most of the model. haha

Army painter are a US based hobby company that produce all manner of essentials from coloured undercoats through to shading dips.

I think that a coloured primer would do the job nicely, but it will depend on the finish you are looking for. If you are going for a strong yellow then stick with a white primer.

A plain white undercoat with a good yellow wash makes for a pretty nice looking yellow.

i do want a strong yellow, and i like the yellow wash i have been doing though i think i need to make it a stronger wash.

i would be down with trying a yellow primer but need to see how it would turn out.

about to get a tac set.

Hi Sage,

Overall i think they look pretty good, i can't see the storm shield model clearly, but the face looked pretty good.

if you want to clean things up nicely, i'd suggest try quickshade and then dullcoat i know from personnel experience that dipping and dullcoat makes yellow armour really look nice without burning out retinas (not that yours do).

I think this is the link i saw recently:

http://www.dakkadakka.com/dakkaforum/posts/list/30/296270.page

I know a lot of painters who think that it's cheating, but anything you can do to up the quality imho is worth it.

Best of luck mate,

For a nice bright yellow you could try yellow ink over white primer.

they dont sell yellow ink at my games workshop and that was going to be my original plan, was to paint armor blazing orange then heavily drybrush white onto it before glazing it with yellow ink. i may look elsewhere for yellow ink since i want to try that still. this is my first time painting yellow so plan to try different techniques with each unit or model and see which one i like best.

i have a few models glued, so far a meltagun SM for my Command squad, a SM for my Command squad, and the sergeant of the sternguard vets. the rest of the tac box set is either being used for the marine swap or are unglued.

I have a suggestion... as someone who does a lot of yellow you might try the following. Use the army painter yellow primer as your base, then wash with Sepia. The end result is a nice, warm, tawny yellow which you can easily brighten up by brushing a little sunburst yellow over the big plates. I think the results would be very close to what you're doing already... but more consistent and a lot easier. Once that was done you could come over the top and add whatever detail, highlights & shading you'd like.

Here's an example from my gallery:

those look awesome.
that seems similar with a lot less steps and i think the more steps i have the more the details gets ruined and the models don't look as good.

i will try that. my next models will be using this yellow primer, and i still want to try to use yellow ink as well.

Please do. I just figure the fewer times I have to hit the fig with paint, the more detail will survive the painting process. Take a look at the "Mantis Warriors" part of my gallery if you want to see what they look like all colored up. Couple of shades of yellow on the plates after washing can really make them stand out.

Thanks! I bought sniper rifles off e-bay, cut off the scopes and barrels and stuck them on the bolters... easy. Made the straps out of green stuff, also easy.

You can make the barrels much cheaper and easier out of plastic tube and wire. With the scopes you're kind of stuck on unless you find a good alternate source. They occasionally go up for sale on e-bay. They're a pretty standard design though... might be another system (WW II based?) where you can find scopes that you can buy en'masse. You might even be able to make your own using a similar method to the barrels.

You can really lighten up the yellow as many layers as you like. I take mine all the way up to an old GW color called "Bad Moon Yellow". However, looking at your other models, I think a layer of sunburst on the larger parts of the plates with some very thin plate edging of a lighter shade (maybe just sunburst mixed with white) would look really good and be right in line with what you've done already.
