Time for another film thread. This one with a subtly different question.
I am looking for Dakkas personal closet favourites, not the best films or the highest rated films but the films thart you love but perhaps ought not to. I am not interested in discussions on well received cinema like the orginal trilogy Star Wars or Lawrence of Arabia, I dont want to hear about films that are so bad they are good, like Plan 9.
Instead I am after films that got poor reviews, are generally not well received and yet hit your own personal favourite list. They need not be utter tirkeys, just utterly watchable.
So I will start off with my own confessions.
STARSHIP TROOPERS
Not a turkey, but not premier cinema either. Still this film manages to be hands down the most watched in my film collection. I dont really know why, other than its a good bit of escapism.
WING COMMANDER
Heavily panned by the critics, this film isnt actually all that bad. In fact it has some rather good moments such as he jump to the Ulysses corridor. Though watching Jurgen Prochnow prostitute his art during the Kilrathi ASDIC scene was cringeworthy, as were the Kilrathi themselves. Love the ships though.
Happy to watch this one anytime too, but I dont often put it on.
n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

Verhoven had balls to portray the undertones of the Federation the way he did. But as it was 90% brain candy the political depth is all too easily overlooked.

in fact, I am gonna add all Arnold Movies...
Some Arnie films are genuinely good cinema. Though the list is short and the quality is rarely Armie related. The one that most comes to mind though is Conan the Barbarianm which had a lot of acting and cinematic quality. Its good art cinema as well as action. I wonder if you would add Conan the Destroyer to your list though, it was unwatchable poo. Red Sonja is somewhere between the two and is merely watchable poo.

I am both selfish and chaotic. I value self-gratification and control; I want to have things my way, preferably now. At best, I'm entertaining and surprising; at worst, I'm hedonistic and violent.
Legend of 1800 Starring Tim Roth (Hulk, Lie to Me, Usual Suspects)
This is a totally AWSOME movie; espically when he smokes Jelly Roll in the piano duel (Sampson from "Half Baked")
KungFu Hustle You like cool fight movies? You like the old Looney Tunes? This is the movie for YOU!!
The Count of Monte Cristo
ANY Clint Eastwood Movie (-Bridges of Madison County)

I genuinely enjoyed Event Horizon... even though it got very poor ratings.
After the orbital strikes, Thunderhawk bombardments, Whirlwinds, Vindicators, fusion and starfire and finally Battle Brothers with flamers had finished cleansing the world of all the enemies of Man, we built a monastery in the center of the largest, most radioactive impact crater. We named the planet "Tranquility", for it was very quiet now.

That latter of course, but I dont expect everyone to have actually read the thread before posting. It would be nice, but allowances have to be made sadly.
It would help if people, yourself included, would try to say why; rather than just list the films.

The Postman. I think it's actually a pretty well-done movie that a lot of audiences just didn't get for some reason. I think it's poor ratings are unwarranted, and I have heard several people say it is "the worst movie they've ever seen," which is something that I think is pretty weird. I mean, even if you don't like the Postman, I can think of a hundred other movies that are way worse for many different reasons. Personally I would consider the Postman a legitimately good film, the only reason I'm putting it here is because I know a lot of people hate it, and I don't think it really qualifies as a cult film.
Waterworld on the other hand was actually pretty bad, although I don't think it's as bad as people say it is. It's at least somewhat entertaining, even fun.
I used to really like Starship Troopers, but for some reason the last time I saw it, it just seemed to have gotten lamer as the years have gone by, but maybe I was just in a cynical mood at the time. The book Starship Troopers is actually one of my favorite books though, although anyone who has read it knows that the movie doesn't really have anything to do with the book. As far as I'm concerned the fact that they share a title is little more than an unfortunate coincidence.
I'll post more if I think of them.
Also, gregor_xenos (and anyone else who has seen the movie) - I've heard several people lately say that the Count of Monte Cristo is actually a really, really good movie, although I haven't seen it myself. Anyone know if/why it got such a poor response, or why some people would like it so much?

The Scorpion King. I watched it on TV and thought it was pretty good.
Prince of Persia. My friend hated the movie, and I don't think it fared well in reviews, however i enjoyed it. It served its purpose for the evening. It was light, fluffy, and fun.

Duely noted.
In wich case I will Add George A Romeros "Land of the Dead",the film was not very well received, but I quiet enjoyed the "class structure" theme Romero interjected into the film.

Gotta say for me its 300, as it's a great film to watch when you have nothing else to do. Sure its not classy, but it never gets boring.
My other favorite would be a relatively unheard of film called rec. Its about a disease that makes people go berserk and kill others, all shot on a camera. Really good stuff.
My third favorite is pans labyrinth. Certainly the most moving film iv'e seen. I have never ever felt emotionally moved after watching a film, but this one has come bloody close. Just at the end when she dies, and she smiles...

I thought rec. was great, wasn't as big a fan of the "American" version though (Quarantine).

To clarify, I'm speaking of the 2002 version starring James Caviezel, and Guy Pierce. (also that fat funny Peurto Rican dude)
Its awsome because it's a classic tale of Greed, betrayal, murder, and revenge!
If you have never read the book, you will probably want to after seeing this.
As to why It flopped..... the classics dont do very well it seems, unless it's got a new "twist" (looking at you DeCraprio in Romeo & Juliet, and the two latest Robin Hoodz)
Oh, your right, It was Resivoir Dogs! "Well I don't know how I came here tonight, got the feeling that something aint right....."
(Every time I hear that song I think about that cop gettin his ear cut off!)

I can second my enjoyment of Starship Troopers,Big Trouble in Little China,Count of Monte Cristo,Demolition Man,Titan AE,and Ultraviolet,to varying degrees. Army of Darkness is good, but I think it has too big of a cult following to really qualify as a guitly pleasure.
Some of mine would be...
Bloodsport-Pretty much a classic cheesy martial arts flick, and still a staple on late night cable. Some great fight scenes in there. You're not a man unless you've seen Bloodsport at least once.
Crank 2:High Voltage-Entertaining simply because it's just so over the top and doesn't take itself seriously at all.
The Quick and the Dead-Pretty underrated movie,IMO. I don't know how a Sam Raimi directed western with Gene Hackman,Russell Crowe, and Leonardo DiCaprio in the cast isn't better received.
MeanGreenStompa wrote:This is awesome but it's rightful wonder was eclipsed by the overly hyped matrix instead, a case of bad cinematic release timing, try it though.
I thought Dark City 50's gothic enough to ecape the Matrix comparisons. The film to truoly suffer for being mislabelled as rip offs was Thirteenth Floor, which was filmed at the same time, and Equilibrium which was too similar in costume for its own good. Both films are obviously too good to make this list, though neither are well known enough thanks to the Matrix trilogy.

My personal favorite movie to just enjoy is Grosse Pointe Blank. It cracks me up every time I watch it, and the performance of both Cusack's are amazing. Love that movie.
