Hey Indiana1000, well done for being brave enough to post on dakka. I'll come back to your painting in a moment but first.....
The Chaos-Kraut. What kind of response is that? Are you Seb Perbert? Mike McVey maybe? Anyone? no, no you're not; and pointless, aggressive negative comments make you look like a
I haven't seen any examples of your abilities yet (except your lack of recognition skills regarding multi-lasers ), but let me recommend restricting your comments in the future to constructive ones.
Indiana1000.
Photo wise try taking the pics from side on (like the melta gunner) with them central to the viewpoint. Take the photo on a white background (curved piece of card/paper as a background will do) with plenty of light (preferably sourced from behind the camera).
Don't worry everyone starts painting somewhere and it's a skill that requires practice and patience. You may need to set reasonable goals before panicking about painting high quality mini's. Read up here and on other sites about dry brushing, blending, washes etc and see how you can apply them to your chaps.
What paints and brushes are you using? How long did this miniature take you to finish? If you want basecoat a new model and we (the dakka community) will go through it with you step by step to help out.
Most importantly don't be afraid to ask questions and get constructive advice and criticism to help you out. Well done, I'll keep watching to see how they turn out.

I'm sorry about Chaos-Kraut, some people need to learn the rules here, as well as basic manners.
I can see what you are doing there and it looks pretty good. However, yes it can be better, but that'll take time. Some people apparently don't know that.

Not the best paint job in the world, but then i'm not an expert by any stretchj of the imagination, and i've also seen much worse than what you have posted. So ignore the people who are flat out negative.
From the pic above i'm thinking a wash of devlan mud on the pants and gun and maybe a bit of ball red on the panels to add a bti of shading. It will also help add definition to the flesh sections.
Finally, basing ther model will improve it no end.
Just my 2p.

Since you asked for help in this thread and another, I'm happy to offer suggestions. Please take this in the spirit that its given, open and honest feedback to a new painter.
I strongly recommend that you pick up a bottle of badab black wash and Devlan mud wash at your local GW store. This simple purchase can make average paint jobs look good. (Although, on second glance, it looks like you used a wash on the helmet and chest armor).
For the first mini (the IG with red armor and meltagun):
I think what you have painted is just fine, actually. I would consider that the basecoat. I would complete the painting with:(1) wash badab black on the hands, gun and shirt sleaves, (2) highlight the hands, gun and shirt sleaves with the original color again (3) base the mini with something. If you don't base the mini, at least paint the entire base black or something so that you don't see those random paint droplets.
To base my minis I use kitty litter, which I paint to an earth color. Then, I add a bit of static grass. You can also purchase basing kits at GW, or get sand and static grass from miniature railroad/model/hobby shops, or just use sand that goes in sandboxes for kids. Just make sure it's clean.
For the second mini you posted (picture from above his head), I can't see enough to make any suggestions except to say again "Base your minis or paint the base black or some other color to cover the brush strokes."
Feel free to keep posting and sharing your paint jobs. Welcome to Dakkadakka.

Having stopped fuming about The Chaos kraut I can now probably add some more useful comments.
Sorry Praxis I know I'm saying almost the same thing.
Indiana1000 you could look at what you have achieved as the base coat and attempt to add in some more advanced techniques.
Buy yourself some Devlan mud and use that (you can mix it with badab black) watered down slightly to instantly improve the depth of shadow. This is fine even on flesh tones.
Try adding highlights. Remember you are painting so they LOOK realistic and that means defining and creating the effect of light hitting the surfaces. Just simple things like the edges of armour plates.
Good, simple basing works brilliantly. I use sand/slate/grit etc which is simply dry-brushed Adeptus battle grey and highlighted very slightly with stonewall grey. This looks alien yet acceptable with foliage etc, contrasts a range of colour schemes really nicely and most importantly is quick and easy to achieve.
The timescale thing depends on your viewpoint. Do you want playing pieces or works of art? I will usually paint 5-8 standard 28mm in an evening but will probably come back and finish them the next. A nid warrior takes about 2 hours to build, clean, dry, basecoat and paint to what i consider a good (ish) tabletop standard.
Painting is relaxing and therapeutic for me though. I usually paint whilst my wife watches TV (to be social) although I find I can be slow, distracted and fussy like the rest of us.

As for the OP, to hell with the negative posters. That paintjob is a damb sight better than a lot of peoples, well, the first one atleast. You did a nice job on the cammo, and I was also considering doing a red with grey/black camoflauge as well. Decided to just do cadians instead .
Keep up at this rate, and I'm sure your painting will improve rapidly. Only complaint is the abundance of random black spots.. unless they're previous coats of painting sticking out. i think it's a good start. one thing i'd recommend modelling wise (and it's only a personal preference of mine) is to add a trimmed down no antenna vox caster backpack to the melta gunner and a cable/cord linking the two. if you look at the metal cadian melta and plasma gunners, the guns are "powered" by their back pack and connected by cables. marines don't have to worry about this as their power armor is, well, powered so it plugs directly into it. i'm a fan of maintaining a slightly different look for the IG so i did this with my plastic melta gunner. the rules for vox casters suck so i'm guessing you'll end up with a few extra (i only use them for my blob squad).

What part of the vox casters rules suck? For 5pts they're awesome, especially considering how important orders are to IG. The only downside (ever!) is if it denies you an extra special weapon or whatever it is you want in a company command/platoon squad.

they're actually 10 points because both the sending and recieving squad have to have one (spending 5pts doesn't get you anything, lol) but the officer's squad vox price can be divided up in the example between multiple squads. in the previous edition, *every* squad in my IG army had one because they allowed you to use an officer's leadership (with no range limit) on ld tests if you had one in both squads; that was pretty cool having a stubborn ld9 army for 5pts per squad due to doctrines. those days are long gone and now they affect orders and i'd be ok with that but... since they're modelled as radios, you'd expect them to somehow maybe augment the range at which orders can be given instead of a reroll. instead, they apparently let an IG officer shout a bit clearer at the same range by having him wave around the handset emphatically?? i think it would be more fluffy to have them allow you to issue orders at any range if both squads had voxes (you know, since you could radio an order over in real life and that's exactly what happens in all the IG novels too). when they first announced the vox rules in codex rumors last year, i made up a little pic to show how ridiculous the new rule seemed to me... it's just not intuitive to me. i'll have to rephrase my earlier statement. they don't suck; they just don't make sense and could have been better IMO.
either way, i've got a few in the army (the PCS, CCS, and one squad in my platoon blob) to get off that important FRFSRF. i'm thinking about getting rid of the CCS one as he rarely ever uses it since he orders around the heavy weapons teams most of the time and they don't get voxes.
