LOL, really?
Vanilla marines are any chapter that doesn't have a specific codex, Ie, imperial fists, ultramarines, salamanders, crimson fists. In other words, they use the generic "Codex: Space Marines"

Blood angels and space wolves are not vanilla. You get the idea

yup...as indicated. vanilla marines are any army based and used from the standard codex space marines. now again as stated there are special characters in the codex that can allow you to play a specific chapter. we have vulcan for sallamanders. khan for white scars. shrike for raven guard. and so on. however a vanilla list/army is generally used without the special characters as they promote various chapters.

Vanilla is a flavour. The term people should use is "Awesomeberry Blue".

I thuroughly LOL'ed.

800 brethren and 2,000 other personnel were expected to reach Crows World within no more than 12 hours. They never arrived.

Let the Bell toll for those that encounter us, not for what we have encountered!

Actually I kinda prefer the vanilla codex to the Blood Angels ones. Aside from the usual jokes about brass nipples, it just feels more Marine than the BA codex does, to me anyway.

And yet, I still prefer just plain vanilla. Funny, that (mind you, I'm rather peculiar when it comes to my chocolate, milk chocolate with no nuts, though other kinds of filling like nougat can work).

I agree. The regular marine codex is so versatile that it can do about anything you need it to. It can take a hit, dish out the pain, scream across the table and melt a tank or two, deploy rapidly, fight in CC with claws, hammers, and S6 power weapons. Not bad however you slice it.

Indeed, having cheaper TH/SS terminators is a very strong benefit for those who like to use termies. And termies are the most interesting single unit (from my perspective at any rate) SMs have to offer.

Why does no one appreciate how amazing cookies n cream (with real oreos!) is?!]

also, how acceptable is it to use a specific chapter's ruleset for a homebrew chapter? i'm guessing it's perfectly fine, but i figure i should make sure

Hi there, I'm an hole! =D

Bolt clanks back and forth behind the thudding roar--
Brass rains on the sidewalk--
The 'sixty rattles out its song.
A song I first heard years ago--
Of fireteams dug in on the breaks between the paddyfields, of tracer lasering the jungle night, of Hueys screaming through the void--
Of Lieutenant Castle getting short and hating it, wanting 'Nam to last forever--
A lullaby come all the way to New York City--
Come to sing you to sleep."

As codex marines? Perfectly fine. You don't even need a background for them, they can just be a colour scheme you came up with because you liked none on the codex.
