There was a brief discussion about this the other day amongst some colleagues and myself. Grant it, we were using the microcosm of a Grade 5 class in an elementary school, but it was interesting to see how the personalities of the students were exhibiting one or the other. Well, Dakka, which is it? Which is more important to you, being right or being happy?

Well, I'm an atheist, so clearly I'd rather be right than happy.

Pft! Nothing makes me happier than a nice long lie-in on a sunday morning! I can eat as much pork as I want, covet whatever I like, and I'm on my 14th year of sex before marriage!

We atheists have LOTS to be happy about! Hurrah!

Meh, I'll just recant on my death-bed. Problem solved.

Until then it's graven images and adultery all the way, baby!

Erm, I don't know what that means, so I'm just going to regurgitate some of Richard Dawkins' opinions.

Cool?

I'm very argumentative by nature. I struggle to be right, because it makes me happy. Usually, it's for the sake of others, not myself, so my arguments do not generally become megalomaniacal.

If I had to forgo being happy to be right, I would definitely do so.

As an aside, I'm wondering how many of those who chose "right" are single and not married...hmmmm...

What were those lyrics again,

In a world where no one is wrong,
I'm never right.

I wanted to wait for a few responses before I answered my own poll. Happy. Being right is great, but not at the expense of positive vibes, dude.

I chose right because I stopped giving a crap what most people think as a philosophy more or less not too long ago. The problem is it's incredibly relative. It's like the whole fate vs. free will thing. If a father raises his son to be the world's greatest rock star by specifically denying him rock music and making it sound evil and therefore cool, and the son "rebels" and becomes the world's greatest rock star, was it the boy's fate influenced by his father or his free will that let him do what he wanted? It's both. I don't think you'll generally be wrong and be happy about it unless you're playing devil's advocate on something.

A person could be ignorant that they are wrong and thus be happy with their ideas that are "right".

The crushing existential despair as you realize that everything in existence is destined to be extinguished, and will all have, in its sum, been nought...that can be a real bitch.

Guilt free masturbation is definite plus though.
