Off the shoulder of Orion

Welcome to the 2nd to last battle in the Berephous Prime Campaign.
Following the Imperial breakthrough at the Agricultural Hub, the forces of the Imperium now turned their attention to the Ork held Forge Precinct Alpha. If they could force the Orks out of the manfactoriums and habs they could relieve the now besieged Berephous Hive.
A break through here was critical, so all remaining forces were thrown into the attack, including Commander He’stan of the Salamanders. The Imperial force would have a numerical superiority, but the Orks would be dug deep into dense terrain and very hard to shift…..
If the Orks were broken here, the road would be open for final victory for the Imperium….
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Ork Forces 2,900 points
Imperial Forces 3,880 points
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The marine assault force moves up towards the Ork lines

View from the north

The Orks wait for the moment to strike. Battlewagons anchor the centre

Buggies and heavy armour hold the Southern flank

And another battlewagon and kan mob prepare to attack the advancing marines on the northern flank

Three mightly landraiders, each holding a hero push forwards.
Captain Boydus Maximus on the north

Inquisitor Julius in the centre

And Vulkan to the south

A lone PDF squad holds the marine objective

The heavies get ready to unleash some pain…

The Ork warboss and Storm boyz make a beeline for the Imperial deployment objective. Defence is for pansies!

On the other side of the same hab-block, a scout squad moves up

The Kan mob starts a long slog across the field…

..into the teeth of the Imperial firepower

Attack bikes move up to improve their fire lanes

And the scout move into cover to weather the approaching Strom Boyz

Landraiders to the left of me...

Landraiders to the right of me...

Marine fire starts to tell with trucks stunned and kans immobilised

The marine advance continues

And the Kans seek whatever cover they can find

The storm boyz assault the scouts in the hab-block

And quickly over-run them

Meanwhile, the landraiders spring their pincer trap

The Strom boyz and battlewagon find themselves between a rock and a hard place..

Vulkan brings the burners…

And Julius brings the hammers…

Captain Boydus bravely stays inside the northern landraider as it takes pot shots at the Kan mob

The forces get into knife-fighting range as the mutual advances draw near

Vulkans flamers fry the Stormboyz. The sole survivor heads for the Imperial objective only to be skewered on the bayonets of the Guardsmen

A second attack bike squad appears in the south. They quickly blast the Deff Dred into scrap

Area denial in the north…

The battlewagon cornered by the landraider sandwich is just out of assault range. It rolls past Inquisitor Julius and into his landraider…
At last! After 12 months of the campaign I finally kill a landraider!!

Revenge is a dish best served at the spiky end of a Deff Rolla!

A trukk mob takes on Vulkan and his terminator retinue. In a spectacular round of shoota fire, two termies go down!

Incensed by the loss of his ride, Inquisitor Julius and retinue pile into the battlewagon

To the north, a boomwagon, Battlewagon and the kan mob continue to advance under the cover of a kustom force field

A Deff Kopta Skwadron comes in from the flank and attempts to destroy the Rhino carrying a tactical squad. 6 twin linked rokkits equals….no hits…
A landspeeder squadron counter attacks and comprehensively destroys 270 points of koptas (ouch!)

The Kans keep trudging forward…

To the south the buggy squad moves in the shoot up the attack bikes

A Sternguard squad dismounts to protect a nearby objective and fend off the buggies

Meanwhile, Vulkan and his squad are busy crushing the Orks that dared attack them

Inquisitor Julius and his squad destroy the battlewagon in a huge explosion, leaving only a smoking crater…from which emerges a very angry Grand Warlord Ironjaw and his meganobz

With a mighty Waaagh (army-wide) the green monsters charge into combat and battle is joined

The ensuing bloodbath sees the terminators and meganobz wiped out. Inquisitor Julius is laid low by the rampaging Warlord and is dragged from the field by the apothecaries

The wounded Ironjaw is picked up by a nearby trukk and moves back to his lines

The demolisher moves up to close the range of its big gun

The northern assault continues to weather the marine firepower as the Kustom Force Field goes into over-drive

The Kans continue to take a pounding as their numbers dwindle

Bikers and the venerable dred move up on the central objective

Vulkan surveys the field and decides to mount up with his remaining terminators

The northern assault grinds on. Concentrated fire sees off the speeders.

To the south the buggies reduce the attack bike squad to a single machine. The Kill kannon battlewagon continues to blast away at the Vanguard squad, keeping them in cover

Another Kan bites the dust…curse those vehicle squadron immobilised rules…

The demolisher is stunned by a lucky zzap gun shot just short of effective range

Another Ork trukk mob assaults the objective held by the Sternguard

Behind them, the lone attack bike avenges his brothers – dodging a hail of Ork fire it closes with the Killkannon wagon and destroys it

The Kans finally get some action as the sole survivor charges and wrecks the demolisher. A lucky buggy rokkit immobilises the venerable dred, removing it as a threat to the unclaimed objectives

The northern attack finally reaches the objective. 20 boyz pile out as the landraider disgorges its own cargo.

The central objective is claimed by a warboss and his nob retinue.

The bikes contest, but wisely avoid an assault…

Both armies hold their deployment zone objectives. The PDF gratefully avoid the worst of the fighting

Bloody fighting breaks out at the northern objective

The Rhino squad the deff koptas failed to stop piles in

The Kans never get into the fight, having to settle for a wrecked Russ

The northern melee ends in stalemate over the objective…1 objective each, two contested...

At the remaining southern objective, the trukk mob wipes out the Sterguard and for a brief shining moment hold victory in their grubby claws…

But their success is short lived. Vulkan and his terminators arrive to save the day

The Ork mob is obliterated, but the buggies are close enough to contest…

Final result:

Orks 1 objective
Marines 1 objective
Contested 3 objectives
Draw!!
Well, another close game that came down to the last rolls of the last turn. The Ork plan was to try to go for a draw by killing off the marine troop units. This went pear-shaped when the storm boyz got roasted (they had planned to jump-pack into the PDF squad and seize the deployment objective) and the deff koptas failed so spectacularly to stop the rhino squad.
Still, another great game and the Orks managed to hold onto the forges! In the campaign rules, this allows them to build Stompas – which brings us to….

...after a year of the campaign and over a dozen games we now reach the grand finale – coming up next the final battle of the campaign:

Thanks for the comments!

@Ailaros - yep, CT gamer called it - the various locations on the campaign map grant points bonuses for the side holding them. Also the teams can move forces within the map to bolster armies, provide reinforcements etc. For this game the Imperial team used up their reserves to try and break the Ork hold on the Forge Precinct.

However, the Imperials have spent a lot of requisition on this battle and a drawn result means they don't gain any benefit from this particular location. In theory this will give the Orks an edge next turn.

In essense, the campaign map and requisitions system adds a little strategic planning to the campaign. Its a pretty simple system, but in over 12 months of gaming, 9 campaign turns and over a dozen battles its worked really well.

Sounds fun. I love to play in this style of campaign that has a map/strategic component and a good story.

BTW - if anyone would like the campaign map/rules etc let me know. You'll probably need to modify it to your armies/taste but the rules and system is simple enough and seems to work.

Just drop me a PM with an email address and I'll send it through in Word

When a game has a good amount of terrain, it instantly makes it more interesting to read. Add a reoccurring storyline to it, and it gets better.

These BatReps have always been good. Looking forward to the final one.
