Alright, i was watching the Ryder cup highlights and i saw this...

Apologies for the clip, i just quickly typed it in and thats a nice short one.

Anyway, im stunned that men "whoop" like women, frankly.

There was an American USMC Captain came over to my unit a few years back, he was a great guy. He was my troop commander, and because he was American, we started doing what we saw as "American" behaviour by "whooping" (illustrated marvellously) by Overton there. Especially the really high pitched one at the end!

Now, Captain Ellis took this in good humour, and my troop became kinda famous as "the whoopers" whereby if something even remotely exciting happened everyone would sorta go "YEEAHHH! WOOOHOOO! fething A! GODDAMN!!" etc etc

And this was obviously satirising the male whoop that seems to have developed over in the USA.

Now, here are two questions i have..

1) Where the hell did it all start?

2) Dont you think that people look like absolute douchebags when they start whooping? First of all i was always taught that the first thing you should do is shake the other guys hand, not get in his face and "woooot!"

and secondly.. it reminds me of women. You know.. the way they "shrrrieeeek" whenever they win a gameshow or something..

For his part, my American boss said that it originated in the revolution, and its basically from the "rebel yell" "yeeehhhaaawwww" but ive not heard that said before. He also claimed that mainly it is done in satire as we used to do it, but judging by Mr Overtons reaction, well.. i'd say its just a very effeminate American habit.

What say you dakka? Does the "man whoop" have an origin? And if so, why the hell cant you stop doing it!!?

my veiws on men whooping are the same as women burping and farting. It's un-acceptable, unless done in an ironic manner or for comic effect, those guilty deserve a smack in the chops.

The heinekin video is great. I'm going to play it for my girlfriend the next time she wants new shoes. It puts it in perspective as a good excuse for some heinekin to get excited about.

Fu yah teabag suckers. I didn't wade through 3 years of college just for some pasty sideway spined limeys to call whooping "effeminate".

I've heard it originates from the rebel yell as well.

The point of whooping is that you are looking for some ass.

Yep.

Generally also known as "being an American".

They are even worse when you force them to a draw.

But mental whooping happens at concerts.
It happens on Happy Days when anyone comes on screen* or Fonzie farts
That seemed to be around the time the whooping started.
Cool guys flatulence is to blame, so it isn't Bird Flu after all.
Unless wind is a symptom of Bird Flu.

I think whooping can be traced back to this fine gentleman:

My wife is an A&M grad, and very obsessed with all the various songs, traditions, etc.

Regardless, whooping is odd. The only time I can think of that I would do it is when I am open in basketball. But then it's used because it's loud and grabs attention, you're saying "holy crap, dude, pay attention and give me the ball."

But then I have a question... As any American can tell you, the general impression of the British is that they are effeminate. Obviously there are exceptions (the soccer hooligan for example), but the American perception of British men is that they're effeminate.

Is the same true, in reverse, of the British perception of Americans?

There is a reason why Wellington called the members of the British army "scum of the earth" and it wasn't because they looked cute in a red uniform. A large chunk of the UK male population on Friday & Saturday night would certainly be able to prove that perception as untrue

Live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about his religion. Respect others in their views and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life. Beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and of service to your people. When your time comes to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song, and die like a hero going home.

Yes and no - that whole macho, gym-queen, 'in-your-face' thing just seems irredeemably camp to us.

I would say the British image of American men is that, apart from a few rednecks and yahoos, they are charming, witty, cultured, and above all, debonair.

Cary Grant is the archetypal American male.
