I get 8 hours of sleep fairly religiously. My body auto-pops up 8 hours later, often within a 5 minute window so it's kind of bizarre. That aside, I keep falling asleep at work. It's fairly sudden and I get super sleepy really quickly and drowsy the rest of the time. I move around a lot at my job and carry heavy printers and poke at them to try to make them work, but I get so incredibly bored. I drink lots of water, stay away from caffeine in general, I run regularly a few days a week and have even started eating "energizing" foods (oats in the morning, pasta at lunch) so I'm really trying here. Any ideas or possible factors besides my job boring me to tears?

Perhaps eight hours of sleep is just not enough for you personally. 8 Hours is not a recommended target it's the recommended minimum.

Well, food like pasta can make you drowsy/sleepy when you eat too much. These foods supply your muscles with energy, but i don't think they greatly stimulate awakenes.

it's probably better to eat fresh fruit. I remember from long nights of WHFRP that fruits like mango and grapes can give you a shot of energy/alertness.

Coffee or tea works wonders for most people, though if you have ADD it might work as relaxant.

What does your work include besides lugging printers and poking at them? are there long periods of inactivity?
I used to have long periods of inactivity at my job (customer service) when the callers dripped in in two's or threes per hour, which made me bored and sleepy despite being able to browse the net freely. Nowadays if calls are slow I answer e-mails which keeps me alert.

@whatwhat: I'm only sleepy at work, and I've often been able to go running, play DDR a few hours then go clubbing til 4 in the morning off 8 hours so it's not like I lack energy in general.

@hero: I don't eat tons of pasta when I do, I just read that it was "slow release" energy or something I'm a fairly skinny guy with a reasonably up metabolism so I try to keep snacks around. I'll try the fruit idea. Even downing a 2 liter of soda can't keep me awake there when I get sleepy, hence why I stopped drinking caffeine all together at work.

I'm left unsupervised to dig through boxes, sort printers, do masses of eBay/craiglist listings from time to time, very rarely I get to interact with another human being. I listen to music but that's lost it's charm a little even, and I LOVE music.

In that case the work is the problem then. Try spicing things up by wearing boxing gloves while carrying your printers. Should keep you on your toes.

Yes, actually

@whatwhat: That's what I'm afraid of. I kinda need this job. At least it doesn't give me migraines like the last one, but it's hard to get anything done when I can barely stay conscious.

Because I'm Mormon.

Anyway, seriously, no, if you know what it's like to crash after a cup of coffe, imagine crashing after a cup of coffe + bored to tears workness. It doesn't seem to help offset the urge to pass out very much and just bites me later. I've tried the "hardcore" energy drinks even and those only keep me engaged for an hour or so before it's like I never even had one.

If you're experiencing fatigue on a regular basis talk to a doctor. They have advanced degrees and years of experience in identifying possible problems with a person's body.

Wow...bad idea.

How about create a crisis that takes several hours of dedicated work to fix/clean up. I bet you will not be tied then as you frantically put out fires/prevent the whole computer system from melting/stop the reply all message from sending nude pictures of you to the whole network.

@shadow: With my new roomates that's actually feasible. I'll wait til I'm a promising upstart before I go down that path though. That's what I'm supposed to do, right?

@warone: The government doesn't even know I have a job so that's not really an option. As far as they know I make a meager living off of selling things at flea markets.

I might just go to the doctors (even though it costs money ). The jumping jack thing actually kind of helped today, and I kept a switching plate of 3 or so tasks to hop between at the first sign of drowsiness.

This thread is hilarious.

Got that 2pm feeling? Why you need...

No seriously I hate that feeling. Its how I found out I simply cannot do 3rd shift work. I had a job when I was like 19ish on 3rds and it just killed me. I once actually fell asleep while walking to the break room. I just dropped everyone thought I was narcoleptic.

Ive found that if you act incredibly weird during your sleepy moments, youll start laughing at everything and that works well for me. I mean you seem like a rather strange fella so it shouldnt be hard to pull off. And you get the added benefit of being that goofy guy at work. I would try to get co workers to sing Michael Jackson songs with me. It never worked, but Id get a good laugh out of it

10-30min nap can really help you out. If you cant do this, eat fruit like apples. Apples can work like coffee, some say better. Also, can you bring in some music? If you have an mp3 player, get some podcasts to keep you busy.

I need 9 hours otherwise i get rather sleepy. Also, if i dont eat every 5 hours (even if its just a snak) i get headaches. FOOD IS GOOD.

I tried coffee this week but it gives me a sore stomach and doesnt keep me more alert\awake. Weird.

Sleep more. Make sure you go to bed and wake up at the same time. Dont mix it up.

Go to bed at the same time if you can. Also experiment with getting less sleep. You may not need 8 hours and too much sleep can make you tired too.

On a side note, please don't peddle that "mormons don't drink caffeine" bit; some people actually believe that misconception.

Actually, one of my friends is mormon and he doesn't drink anything with caffeine in it, so i guess it's not a misconception

It's coffee and tea that are specifically verboten; anything else is personal choice. I'm LDS and have been known to drink a Dr Pepper or dewski (Code Red preferably) if I'm a little sleepy. Your friend may just be avoiding soda for general health reasons. Ever drink a soda and then go running? It sucks.
But enough on that I don't want to drag this off topic.

On topic, I once had a job where I had to be up at 5 AM everyday and sometimes before I went to work actually had to run a couple laps around the building to wake me up. There was rarely anyone outside so I didn't get any weird looks. of course that was a desk job and you sound like you move around alot already so that may not be very helpful.

A trick I used in the military was a little dab of BenGay on the genitals.

Sack, shaft, or head. No way you're falling asleep while that stuff is working on that part of your body.
