Subject: To Giant or not To Giant? That is the question...
I'm also heavily considering running the trolls in a different formation... perhaps a unit of 8, and a unit of 4. I've found that at higher point levels 6-strong monstrous infantry units aren't enough to go up against some of the hard blocks I encounter, and running them 4-wide is a lot more convincing!
(Also, I know the list has no magic defense... going up against a slann tonight, so we'll see if something changes after that )

"To Giant" is always the answer when you're bringing a WoC monster list. I mean come on, where else can you stuff a Skulltaker in your pants and people are ok with that?
I mean, you're obviously making this list to have fun with it, so I'd go ahead and toss a Giant in there every time. On a separate note, where's the Manticore-Lord?
On another separate note, when/where is DakkaCon?

Good point . And seeing as the Giant got his first kill yesterday (after whiffing the first several games he was in) he has probably earned a spot! As to DakkaCon, here's the thread about it:
It's at Showcase Comics and Games just outside Philly, on January 22nd and the surrounding days. Going to be an awesome time . I think it's in range of both of you, although Wehrkind would certainly have a shorter trip!
Edit: Manticore is going in, probably for 2.5K . Although if I ever play a bigger game with this, I'll probably have to sub him for Kholek... but as I enjoy smaller games, I anticipate getting quite a bit of use out of that excellent Raging Heroes model, when it comes out!

I would say keep the Giant, in a list like this having another big bad monster is simply that much better. Its a shame you couldn't give the giants or ogres marks but oh well. Looking forward to seeing how this list does (may have to copy it myself at sometime).
How would you scale this to 2500 (out of curiosity)?

Man, that sounds like fun, wish I could go and not be a country and a half away, though I am probably going to go to Australia for January, so I won't mind it all that much I guess.

On the giant or more MI, my immediate answer is "GIANT!" ... but a more thought out response involves making the DO more important, and 4-wide certainly does that. The 8 ogres are cool and they could certainly use it, but really it's more about getting those drogres up to fighting strength.
Then again, I am more than happy to waffle back to getting the big man in there
So we're looking to play 2000 pointers @ DakkaCon now? I suppose I'll (drunkenly???) bring along my nurgley skaven, have recently retooled them for 2k and am interested at the possibilities. Also: painted, unlike the WoTers

Only 2k for Dakkacon? Cool... I think I can retool for that, and it means fewer painted lads and lasses
And don't be coy Salvage, you know you will have a 5th of something or other that will become a 125th by the end of the first night. That's why we take my car; worse gas mileage, but we won't have to break your legs to get your prostrate form to fit in the back Besides, my chaos lads want some rat flavored revenge, and you will need to be pretty far into your cups for me to have a decent chance of satisfying them
Hoping by some miracle to get this painted for pick-up games by DakkaCon . Will probably have it all assembled by tonight, believe it or not!
I think we're just planning on getting pick-up games in whenever, I know I'm doing one vs. Jin
I did face the slann last night... and got crushed. Will have a think on list stuff, but it was pretty much my tactics that did me in. I needed to hit his temple guard with 2 units at once, as well as keep the shaggoth far, Far away from skinks... which I didn't do!
And yes, the manticore will probably serve as a mount for a BSB for 2500!
Also, dragon ogres failed to break skirmishing skinks for a few rounds of combat yesterday . Few attacks combined with cold-blooded... do better next time, fellas!

Blarg, RT is taken so I have to play Wehr(n00bsauce)kind???
Wehrkind wrote:Only 2k for Dakkacon? Cool... I think I can retool for that, and it means fewer painted lads and lasses
Just kidding of course, Herr Conductor On points, you should probably figure on bringing 2.5k as that's what most people play. 2000 is more pleasant to me because only my WoT are being redesigned for those points, my skaven and ogres are mostly 2k lists bloated up to 'tournament size' (That said I'd be tickled to give 2k a shot!) Also, I'm utterly impressed that you're shooting to get the entire army painted for DCon, well done dude!
Me, I've got 7 PCB to paint for my skaven and I've only built 2 so far, with the icy winds of no-prime-time sweeping in ...

Also, if the manticore is released at Christmas, I'll have 2.5k if that's Jin's/other's preferred poison
Throgg gave in on me last night. He decided that passing 2 consecutive purple sun initiative tests the previous game meant he should fail his dwellers below strength test (only fail on a 6) along with 3 other trolls . Without that I might have still had a (albiet small) chance!
As to the list, for now I'm going to assemble the extra 2 ogres and dragon ogres, and I'll have the options (also useful for higher point games) although it looks like the vote is for the giant to stay in at 2K

By the way, to get all 2500 together I will need to make a clandestine Warstore purchase. So if Mrs Wehrkind comments on how nice it was for you to purchase me some models and have them sent to the house as a thank you present for all the times you stayed over, just run with it and play along
And I would like to see a giant too, just for monstrous fun
One question- I just noticed that only a chaos lord or sorcerer lord can take a manticore as a mount. Can a chaos lord be a BSB? I had thought it was only an exalted champion that could.
Also, "clandestine" purchases ftw here too

Oh, didn't realize that exalteds couldn't ride, was thinking since DE heroes could WoC heroes could too No, chaos lords can't hold a flag, sadly. Though they are pretty good at projecting their LD9 18" Also, you using the Raging Heroes manticore? What a beasty that is!
@ Wehr - If you want to have "me" send you "early Festivus presents" in the name of "being a good guest" than go right ahead, though I really am happy to play 2k games with you and whomever is up to cutting some uber-units and ultra-combos out of their lists. (Keep this on the DL but I'm scheming up running a 2k RTT in the distant future, as a change of pace from the 2500+ no comp NE events.)

Ah, in that case I'll have to choose between the lord and the sorcerer lord. Not a bad choice to have to make, though . And yes, I'll definitely be waiting for the raging heroes model to be released to use for it!
I do prefer 2K or under, as above that the combos get crazy (as you say). Not to mention grand armies at 3K...!

Somewhere between 2k and 2500 is probably best for me as well. I don't have any sort of ULTRA MEGA COOOOOMBOOOOOO to speak of, but seeing as I haven't yet started to scratch build my warshrine, it will probably be a bit till I really have my list together Unless I tweak things and go for the Slaaneshi giant... hrm...
Yea, that Raging Heroes Manticore does look really nice, I just hope the 25mm version comes out nicer than their first run models did. I have the first three, the chicks with the banner, the vamp lord and baby on big guy thing, and while they are pretty decent the details were pretty soft and iffy, especially on the vamp lord. I haven't painted her up yet, but I foresee a lot of issues with the nearly flat detail on some bits, and two of the heads are completely useless. Still, they were the first models out of a new company, so I am hoping their quality can improve. They have a good deal of room for it, certainly :(
Hmm, an all monster army is quite interesting. I say giant.

With those wings? Daemon Prince all the way! I can totally see that, especially for an all monster army.

I also just re-read throgg's entry and realized he basically is a BSB for my army- since he lets trolls/ogres/dragon ogres/warhounds/monsters re-roll their break tests (and most of them also have Will of Chaos, so they already re-roll their panic checks). Who needs a BSB
If this guy lived past turn 1, he'd actually address my greater weakness- having no magic!
On a slightly related note- for 2000 and under, I can play the break-point mission with just the single unit of ogres and a general. For 2500, I'll split them in 2 to get 2 banners... and possibly deploy each of them in a single column (1-wide, 3-deep). Would depend on if I was facing cannons or not, of course! Since my last army couldn't even take the field in this mission, I figured I would at least come up with a way to get on the field for it with this army

Yea I could definitely see that being a DP, Tizz or Khorne. I do secretly love how one of the best Daemonic Gifts for a Tizz DP is Fury of the Bloodgod too For being written by Phil Kelly, the DP entry really makes you go "Uh... what?"
Speaking of unusual counts as... I gotta get around to posting my list, and see how people feel about MoK marauders with flails being skinny savage chicks with two hand weapons...
Nice DP build RT, bit familiar in a good way Without the level 2 'support' caster I run your casting phase is pretty simple: 1) Steal spells, 2) Select biggest one, 3) Chuck max dice at it, 4) Profit, 5) Weather miscast with T5, W4, 4+ ward
But the DP does fit the critter nicely, and the theme of no tiny men allowed, and also he's really very good at killing any war machines that are pestering your big boys, ASAP. Also, crap that is a beautiful kitty cat model (admittedly though if it weren't called a manticore I'd assume it was something else ... not that that stops the awesome factor)!

Thanks And "profit" definitely! Although, won't he get a 2+ ward vs. miscast wounds with fury of the blood god? The names do unfortunately denote rather, erhm... opposite... gods . Might fit another gift onto him (probably the breath weapon one) depending on points.
Also considering running the dragon ogres as one unit of 6 (with either GW or AHW). I have 10 models so I'm going to assemble 4 of each type and 2 that can blend in with either (probably one big axe in a single hand type thing).
Appreciate the encouragement guys, now I'm all energized to finish assembling and get to painting!
