I recently purchased the Tau battleforce (Got it cheap for $70 too), and I was wondering what a good next purchase would be. I'm thinking either broadsides or a pirhana or two, but I'm not sure, so any help would be appreciated.

Well, since there isn't very many monsters out there, I don't think you'll need a broadside, until they FAQ it to do multiple wounds (D6) then it's pretty pointless. Could come in handy if you need to take a wound off a stank late in a game or something.

I'd go with some piranhas, their mobility will be great for war machine hunting, just look out for cannons, as their front AV10 (I think) won't last long to a couple cannon shots, even bolt throwers will be penning it on 5+.

I would go with some more fire warriors, or kroot tbh (though skirmishers took a hit in this edition). The S5 shooting of the fire warriors will be great against armies like WoC and LM where you'll need that high strength to get some wounds in. I know I wouldn't want to see 10 fire warriors doing a rapid fire stand and shoot...bye bye WoC!

Have you considered a hammerhead? Their S6 pie plate would be great against all the horde armies out there.

I've done it in the past too. There's a little triangle icon in the upper right of your post that you can click to alert a mod that the post is in the wrong place. I'm always surprised at how fast they correct it. I'll pop it now, and I'm guessing by morning (my time) it'll be shifted already.

I would honestly suggest you get a 2nd battleforce.

But if you want anything else a Commander and a Skyray box. (it comes with all the parts for a HH rail, ion and skyray so you can swap parts.)

A second battleforce is an excellent addition, beyond that in terms of versatility get a sklyray (since it has the parts for a devilfish, hammerhead and skyray all in one) or two, a few more battlesuits, a command suit, then flush out the rest with whatever.

Stealth teams can make good use of markerlights, as opposed to pathfinders. I would recommend them over pathfinders mainly due to the fact that pathfinders literally hold a sign over their heads saying "Please shoot us"

How do Broadsides suck? they have twin linked rail guns! That would take out a tank in one or two hits! Aren't they like strength 10 AP 1? Add on the rocket pods, and I can't see how that could suck in any way.

Oh, and I'm also considering getting some pathfinders (As many rail rifles as possible) and using the Devilfish for them, and just have the firewarriors foot slog it. (For now. I tend to space out my purchases over a long time so it doesn't seem like I've spent as much as I actually have on this hobby )

Really? I find that hard to believe, as the skyray costs less than a hammerhead on GW.com. It comes with the parts to make a hammerhead too?

Sorry Galactic, I was making fun. This was originally posted in the Fantasy thread.

As for advice, the others aren't wrong, a second battleforce would do you good. Can always convert fire warriors into pathfinders if you need to, stealth teams usually always work, and I do believe they are right about the skyray kit. I'm sure you could google it or something to check out the sprues to make sure there's a rail and ion cannon in there.

I swear to you that the Skyray does in fact come with the parts for making it into a Devilfish, Hammerhead or skyray.

Why it costs less I honestly have no idea. They are the same price here.

I'm not sure if Skyrays do indeed come with Hammerhead parts, but whatever the case you need at least one Hammerhead in your army. I personally have 2 and am trying to push that number to 3 when I'm done with my other armies. They're superior to Broadsides because they can still mount all of the broadside weapons, and in exchange for the twin-linked cannon, they possess a blast template option in addition to the normal railgun profile that can utterly destroy hordes as well as tanks, making them invaluable. You should have no less than 3 full squads of Fire Warriors. Their guns are very powerful and will put the pressure even on Space Marines. You should also grab a few more Crisis Suits. Crisis suits and Fire Warriors are gonna form the backbone of your army. A Crisis Commander is debatable. I've never used any of the excuslive metal pieces and with a bit of creative converting an ordinary plastic suit can look the part while costing less.

Nope, there are only piranhas. Hell tau don't even have a flyer in their codex atm but the dark eldar have them now, same with some damn space marines, imperial guard.... grrrr

At least, until the codex update. They might add more stuff from forge world, hopefully at least the xv9's.

They have better saves than IG, and people still field foot slogging IG lists. I'll get another devilfish eventually, but for now I need a heavy support option and I'll be using the devilfish for some rail-rifle toting pathfinders.

I've had this moment. Everyone forgets that the Tau have the ridiculous advantage of having a basic gun that can function tolerably as a transport-popper.

In my own experience Fire Warriors function better outside of transports. They have extremely long range and strength on their guns. Moving them only marginally increase their effectiveness while making them extremely vulnerable to being charged. SMs can pop out of a rhino and shoot things because they can withstand the resulting charge Imp Guard too, since their sarge can take some pretty nifty CC stuff. Tau dont have that luxury. larger blocks of baseline FW will let you put the heat on the enemy. Plus if you can get a lucky shot off you might even be able to pop a Vindicator.

While I have no experience with footslogging Tau, keep in mind, guardsmen can have a blob of, roughly, say 20 to holyshitbignumber, in size. That's a lot of casualties to absorb. Add a commisar and you become nigh fearless for the small price of one model.
