Necrons suck because they're limited to only a few good units, and what they do have is really quite expensive. Not to mention they have very, VERY few good plastic models. Gauss weaponry has really been nerfed in 5th edition, so Necrons now lack a lot of the fire power they had before.

They just need to be updated, I think. They're still a 3rd Edition codex, so they need an update about as bad as the Dark Eldar did.

make a new codex. The only time i've seen them play effectively is against an all-warrior army...AP4 for everything...and even then it was a close game (4-5 on killpoints)

Couple in their ability to not damage tanks as well *AV 11<* and their lack of good AP guns means alot of times their shots are going to bounce off thick armored foes. Sure they can pump out alot of shots but it's taken me whole shooting phases to bring down 1 tac squad of marines using well over 100shots from warriors, immortals and destroyers.

Lastly, sweeping advance. The great unequalizer for low initiative models. A bad ld roll and suddenly your giant core of troops or expensive shooters poof into spare parts. Which then helps contribute to the special rule only 1 army was stupid enough to include: Phase Out.

On the tournament circuit? Yeah they suck big time. PUGs? I'm sure you can snag some wins from people who never fought them before. It's a balancing issue really.

it's that they're in the wrong rules edition.

WBB was great. Nowadays, it's all about close combat, and it's easy to get swept, and WBB doesn't work if you just got swept.

Gauss weapons were great. Now glancing can't destroy vehicles (at least, not if they have a bunch of weapons), making the necron hard-pressed to stop vehicle-based armies.

Necron were fairly balanced. Now warriors are expensive for what they do, given that lots of things have gotten cheaper.

All of this means that necron now struggle against close-combat armies, vehicle-heavy armies, and hordes.

Know anyone who plays any of these?

Yeah, but then you don't hvae enough warriors, and a few well palced Demoliser shells later, and you phase out!

As for not being good against hordes...really? I would think that's one of the few areas Necrons can still their own. At least, warriors chewed through my Guardsmen easily enough. Though, I think to take Warriors in that number, you'll need to avoid taking a Monolith..

It's not only that glance can't kill tanks, it's a whole bunch of things that, as Ailaros has pointed out, came about thanks to Codex creep.

Just give them a quick reprcing, and fix some of the things that no longer apply, or are worthless in 5e, and they'll probably be a DECENTLY competitive army again. Will they topple the Puppies and Twi Marines? Probably not, but it'll at least be decent.

The fact is that the 3rd edition codex, the LONGEST in current issue as of now, just does not stand up quite as well to the newer 5th ed. codices.

I'm sure when their turn rolls around, they will kick arse, and have some nice fancy rules and good USRs to boot.

Phase out also hinders them highly against 5th ed armies.

Mattieu~~~~ It's not that eldar are bad, it's that they require a lot of intergration between units. Also, that doesnt prove anything other than GW has a huge hard-on for marines, and, given the option between making a xeno the best psykers or making a marine the best psyker, they will 9 times out of 10 choose the marine.

One thing that would boost them would be viable close combat options for that eventuality. And thus to avoid this becoming another wishlist thread let's leave it be and see who can recall the days when they didn't suck? I sure can. Popping Landraiders with a random gauss flux shot after deepstriking really makes one's day.

Wraith wing is awful.... honestly, you could drop 9 wraiths so easily its unreal. Sure they have a 3++, but you can kill 9 space marines easily in a turn with boltgun fire, and look, thats almost 500 points doen the drain....

They suck atm because in order to field a half feasible, competitive list you need to throw down 180$ on fast attack alone for Wraith Wing and then 300 for a Destroyer wing. If you're not going for either of those though then you run into issues of being able to compete and again problems with price both inside and outside the Codex. Necron units are very expensive point-wise and just as expensive money wise because near everything is metal. This is highly unfortunate as spamming a bunch of models is needed in order to help combat that damn Phase Out. REgardless of all the flaws however they are still a very fun army to play.

I honestly believe that an army by itself doesn't "suck" and that in the hands of decent players just about any list can win. I think the solution to anti-armor for necrons are scarabs with disruption fields. Watch them in one round of assault against a vehicle and see all of the vehicle's armaments being stripped away one by one until it becomes immobilized then destroyed.

Necron lost all of the perks about their army when the BA codex rolled around. WBB? BAs have FnP all over the place. Tankbusting? nerfed in the 5th edition. Unfortunately they still kept the bad parts, namely Phase Out. They're also currently the ONLY army with every bit of equipment having been made into a model. Speaks alot about how old they are.

In my experience, Necrons actually work best against hordes. I have unbelievable luck against IG and Orks. It's just the sheer volume of fire and AP available to dismantle hordes that do it for me. The Destroyer Lord, best anti-tank in the codex, and with Scarabs he is a great multi-tasker on the field.

It's just hard to make them work in competetive play. Bring back the cheese!

Yeah against all infantry armies (sans power armoured ones) necrons ain't too bad especially when destroyers show up to the party.
