Well, earlier this week I was thinking about buying an honour guard squad...until I remembered...GW only make them in the marneus bloody calgar box. Why should I have to pay an extra £15-ish quid for a unit? why don't they sell the honour guard and marneus seperately? WHY?!

Well if it's for Blood Angles then you could always just buy an assualt squad and paint them gold?
Other then that I'll just say that Games Workshop have a reputation for being awkward.

Its actualy easy to convert that squad. Buy an assault squad, I am sure you have extra blood angles bits. Toss the bits onto the squad. Paint them so they are shineyer than your other troops. Done.

I wish I had the time and ability to convert those Ultra Honor Guard into Grey Knight Justicars.

Best way for unconverted Honour Guard? Get the Vanguard Veterans and give them regular backpacks rather than the jump packs. Their swords and axes are fancy enough to look like Relic Blades and they look incredibly generic.

Personally, I'm converting Death Company as my honour guard for Huron.

I have Forgeworld MkIV armor and Sanguinary Guard legs I'm going to turn into honor guard/vanguard veterans, with some of the Chapterhouse pre-heresy jump packs
As someone mentioned though, an assault squad is a good base to start from

I bought the set... converted 3 Inquisitors out of it. Still need to finish painting them. And still need to figure out what to do with the other two figures. The honour guard models are beautiful though, I really wish GW sold them seperatly.

I think most people mention BA is because the Sanguinary Guards are the best for actually converting Honor Guards. Glaive Encarmines are perfect for Relic Blades and their armor is really ornate. However due to the icongraphy they will only fit a BA Honor Guard squad.

For Vanilla Honor Guards without shelling out the money for Calgar, the closest I can think of are the old SM veterans (not Sternguard). Many of them have huge ass axes that can are perfect for Relic Blades.

My reccomendation is just to get some Veterans.

i wanted some JUST after they stopped carrying them seperatly so i had to get Papa Smurf.

I don't know why you'd want the Ultra ones with all the big "U" symbols on them. Just use FW Scorpion bits and convert yer own!

Otherwise, find someone bemoaning how GW had to make Marneus only available in a box with Honor Guard and trade with them!

I just wish the heads were separate. I'd have no problem making my own honour guard, but I want them to have those awesome helmets.

I second that. Gw should really make a "heroic conversion set" that just has a bunch of cool bits, including those wing-faced helmets! Being non chapter specific it would sell way more than the DA or BT upgrade sets!

It's called the Command Squad box and a call to the War Store for some relatively cheap bitz.

In the amount of time you've spent complaining about this you could have converted a sweet honor guard squad.

Here's the funny thing.

The two Honor Guard were available for a time in a blister pack format due to demand.

Now, actual sales figures didn't meet even a quarter of the demand. Which is why of course...

They're no longer available by themselves.

Just convert your own. You can do some really cool stuff with the Sanguinary Guard box. Just file off the blood drops on their rad power swords.

On the subject of Honor Guards, has anyone actually used Calgar's rule of having three squads of them? I find it to be a bit excessive for anyhting short of apocalypse.

I did mine with a myriad of bits from sw,ba,sm they're not the greatest but they definitely stand out

Are we assuming that the ability to take even one squad would be useful?

I would use the sang' guard box personally.
We might also see the regular honour guard available in blisters again in jan 2011.

Or just use Grey Knights. Hopefully they wont have too much Inquisitorial icongraphy.

one is good if you use it correctly. 5 SS nad relic blades can be quite deadly when put in a LR.

Three could be used to humiliate your opponent: You are so sure of the rest of your army that you're willing to handicap yourself with 3 Squads of bling ;D

there is one guy who used to come to our club.

he ran 3 full squads with calgar, a couple of naked Tac squads, and 3 Land Raiders.

the Honorguard and Calgar would just power forth in their Land Raiders of Doom while the Tac squads would just sit on back field objectives.

I agree, they should be sold separately. Seems like that would benefit everyone except Ultra players, but honestly who cares about them anyway!

My only advice would be to try your luck on ebay, see if you can find them w/o Calgar

There seems to only be two generic Honor Guards, so you're not going to get alot of variety just by buying GW ones. Converting might be a better route.
