I currently have the BA codex, and want to get either the SW or SM codex.
I have a bunch of tac squads, many ml devestators, a LRC, AoBR termies and Space Hulk termies, misc HQ's (and honor guards) etc

What codex would you guys suggest me to get, and why?

Well, what style of army do you like?

From what you already have...
If you got SW you would have a competetive army already.
If you got SM you could build a competetive army quite easily but you might need to pick up one or two bits.

Now, this may sound biased (Me being a SW player and all) But for their Asthetic, new rules, awesome kits, and cool fluff the answer is SW! In addition, they play the most different form your other armies, and are (arguably) better and more fun to play than SM (though that last part is just me).

Also, you should have some bits if you recieved my package for you warboss.

Hmmm... what else... oh yes, characters! The SW have cooler heroes and make your own, especially withTWC- they look sweet!

I will put in a good hand for SM- they have all their kits, and Raven guard and Salamamders are both amazing.

Well, Ive yet to play a game of warhammer yet
Im not sure of my playstyle. Some of my stuff will stay BA ( my libby dred I built, etc)
But most can be repainted or made into a red successor
( also, I have participated in the Great Marine Swap, so the marines from other people will NOT be changed. I think the multi-chapter bit may be a bit wierd w/ SW)

Also can SW get rifleman dreds? I really want to get one

Afaik SW can get rifleman dreads.
If you paint your army kinda blueish/grey you can claim the as both SW and a codex chapter. This may be a tad annoying to some but it saves money which is always good.

Well, the two custom chapters I made myself are either silver, or very dark red with blue helmets. Could either of these work for a SW ummm... Pack? Don't they not have successors?

I would go with codex marines. You can branch off into many codex chapters or make your own. The Vanilla codex has lots of cool special characters that can change the flavor of your whole army.

Space wolves are very specific chapterwise, and they also have their own models that differ from regular tactical squads and terminators ect.


With your current models, you can get rhinos for your tac squads if you already havent, convert those AoBR termies to TH/SS termies (can buy the kits online), and maybe make that LRC into a redeemer if you kept the extra bits. ML devistator squads can work in the vanilla codex, we just pay more for them atm.

SW don't have successors but they do have lost companies.
Every hundred years or so all the companies (bar a few) go off to look for Russ. Sometimes they don't all come back.
The ones that don't are called lost companies and usually they end up having some massive adventure somewhere else and dying mainly.
But you could paint your guys silver and say they re-painted their armour to show their 'lost' status which would let you use both (Fluffwise)
Also you may want to be more sparing with the wolfy parts if you go for this.

Hmm, I like some codex SM characters, but some SW characters look cool

Wolf Bros- Maniacs to Insaniacs. I enjoy doing them after, they pop up all over the place, as regenade protectors and enemies.

For SW, can't they mix and match terminator armorments?

Yeah, one of my favorite things about Wolf guard.

Yes they can, and you can get some pretty neat combos with them (and as troops with grimnar!)

Just make an entire army with PA Wolf Guard instead of Grey Hunters (With a terminator armoured retinue for Grimnar) they are badass.

Well, my silver chapter is the Sons of Ouroboros. ( representing infinity)
I think I could tie them in easily enough with SW. I could say they are of an unknown founding and chapter, but have ties to the SW.
Or, make up a story incorperating all my multi-chapter forces under one banner. (apoc, possibly)

Or simply repaint some stuff and buy SW stuff

Keep the stuff you have now but say that a recent invasion of a nearby system has drawn IG and Naval forces away and has left the Sons guarding a new world (A savage world almost a deathworld) which they have checked for possible recruits and have found some. These recruits even when fully indoctrinated are still slightly tribal/savage and fight similar to the SW.
Not only does that let you use the SW codex (Fluffwise) it also advances your chapters story.

That sounds great.
But I want a unified scheme, rather than multichapter, so I will either repaint some of my models,( LRC, the ml dev squad, random ml troopers, ) and Buy more SW, or work in a fluff story about a lost pack coming out of the warp at the same time as the Sons passed.
I have a honor guard squad of the Sons, but they have robes.
Would SW ever wear robes?

Also, a full metallic army doesnt seem so great to me. I kinda want to keep my multi-chapter army ( which includes the Sons) seperate. Though it is mainly BA, with some misc tac marines and like, 3 veterans from different chapters, I may get the Vanilla codex for them, b/c I painted my BA tac squads way before the new codex came out, so I didnt know they would be bad compared to assault squads
Plus multi-chapter would fly better with vanilla.

However, I do want to make a SW force now...

SW are not only able to field cheaper squads in many cases, but in almost all cases much more flexible and capable units. Grey Hunters are far and away superior to tac marines, and the army can do most things that other marine armies can save for the more esoteric units like thunderfire cannons.

So I have heard. I think with my LRC, dev squads, and a few purchases, I will have a pretty workable force to build off of.

Grey Hunters aren't superior to Tactical Marines, just easier to use efficiently.

between being cheaper, far better in CC, and that incredible "damned if you do, damned if you don't" Counterattack ability, I think it outweighs the benefits of Combat Squads and Combat Tactics rather heavily.

Hmm, so, if I want to start my force, any tips on what to get?
I have heard about the wicked inexpensive 5 ml long fangs. Any other tips for making a sizeable force?

lots of basic troops dudes and rhinos for them is always an excellent place to start.

Go Vanilla SM. You won't even have to repaint your BA. This way you can choose between BA and SM depending on what you want to do.

I am kinda tempted to buy both, and maybe just get a bit of SW. (or go on a big SW buying spree....)
Because vanilla fits all my tacticals, as well as multi-chapter.

Go for SW! YYou can do so much to work in alternative paint schemes. Also, things to buy are the battleforce (gets you a great deal and tons of spare bits) as well as ML Long fang, WG termies, and tons of rhinos (they really need them). I can PM you my advice on building a list tomorrow.
