I have been digging around for ideas on this topic. The first thing that popped to mind was to simply make a modified Marine with a four-legged mount (Tomb Spyder legs?). Wasn't sure if that would look right, so I figured I would see what folks here could think of. It can be a mount or something to mount a Marine on, I just want to do a mechanical mount of sorts for some Iron Hands count-as Wolves.

Thoughts? Ideas?

How in the hell do Iron Hands "counts-as" Wolves even make sense? Not seeing it.

Anyways. Given how the Iron Hands are all about replacing the "weakness of the flesh with the solidity of iron"...why not have whatever you do just be fully cybernetic? No rider, just a really nasty as feth iron beast.

I don't understand, you mean that you don't just use whatever codex works best on the table for your marines?

Iron Hands feel like a very codex army to me, but it is not my army. I'm a weirdo who actually has a SW army that is a SW army.

Space Wolves have a Dreadnought HQ. That's pretty iron hands-ish.

So do Blood Angels. They also have power armor and bolters.

One HQ does not make it a great counts-as. I was generally railing against the idea that if you squint hard enough, any marine chapter can be adapted to whichever is the hawtnewthing.

Behind you!

IMO, you should make a 6-8 legged mount and use tomb spider legs to make a mechanical arachnid of sorts.

Just a suggestion.

Indeed, or alternatively mount them destroyer torso style.

According to who?

As you pointed out, there are more similarities than differences. Bolters, Power Armor etc.

You know, you are right. Everyone should play SW.

Better start figuring ways to make Ultramarine TWC.

A touch expensive, but SOB penitent engines with extra legs in the arm sockets and posed as quads might work. If you dont mount the "driver" that is.

IG sentinel legs (just the lower couple of joints), would be the easiest conversion base for a mechanical riding beast for marines. Ork kanz legs might be cheaper, if you don't mind a slightly more lo-tech tlook. Both would be horribly expensive though, unless you get real lucky with the botz suppliers (or know an ork player who's converting his kans into grot tanks and so doesn't need the legs).

For the main torso, bikes would be the simplest conversion base, and conveniently come with a pair of riding legs in power armour

But as suggested above, a quad bike might be a fluffier counts-as.

You could always just make them use armored bikes with servo arms. That'd be Iron Hands-ish and remain fluffy.

This actualyl gives me an idea for my own conversions....

Up-armoured bikes is an interesting idea. Not sure how you'd model them though, especially as you'd need multiple identical ones.

Trikes are another option - easier and cheaper than quad bikes.

Abd let's not forget the easiest option of all - normal bikes, so long as you have no other bikes in your army, of course. But that scores rather low on the Coolness scale :(

Why not convert the thunderwolves into robot Knights? Think mini dreadnoughts.

The concept displeases me, i really don't see it, the only reason i can see for this is that TWC are so good they are near broken rules-wise. I agree with Pretre iron hands would be a very codex chapter.
I will humour you however
Something like the 'Necris Scavenger' from UT3 would be a pretty nifty solution.

For those of you that don't know. Back when GW was putting out IAs articles in White Dwarf for the different marine chapters during the 3rd-4th edition era. The Irons Hands were modelled on the Space Wolf rules. So the idea is not as far fetched as some are making it out to be.

The centaur idea works for me.

And then when you factor in the fact that you could still have 4 Dreadnoughts in the SW Codex, one of them as an HQ, it seems even less so.

Except alot has changed since the 3rd-4th edition Space Wolf timeframe, the Space Wolf codex not being least of those changes.

That would depend on your definition of "A Lot" I suppose.

I'm halfway through Prospero Burns, and it still seems that they're basically big and scary Space Vikings when you get right down to it.

I just read the IA article for Iron Hands and am not seeing where you got this. Other than their non-traditional 'Clan' setup, I see no mention of SW.

That being said, they do say that their sergeants will sometimes wear TDA (WG counts as) and Dreadnoughts can lead them (Bjorn). I think the similarities end there though.

I don't think he is saying that SW have changed in their fluff. They have definitely changed in their rules, however, as have most chapters.

Fluff-wise, IH and SW are pretty far apart. Scary Space Vikings vs Fervent Cyborg Men.

I find it amusing people don't factor in my love of Iron Hand with the whole playstyle issue. I do not want a Codex army, but I want Iron Hands. I fail to see how the SW 'dex can't work for the Iron Hands anyhow.

It can. Don't let internet fluff purists cramp your style. GW retcons and completely discards its own background on a whim, but you're supposed to toe the current fluff line body and soul? Please.

Im kinda surprised no one suggest the cyber mastif from the Inquisitor range. Its about the right size of a thunderwolf.
I would have no problem if someone set down an iron hand army and said im using space wolf rules.

Since people are just basically using any army for the most powerful codex just get BFSP trolls or something... this whole 'counts as' is getting a little bit ridiculous.
