Someone said I should post my Necron temple set here, so I thought I'd crosspost just the completed pictures here. The full project log is over here.
I'm compiling some of our "greatest hits" pieces into montage pictures for easy portfolio access, so I'll be dropping them here as well as I finish putting them together. It occurred to me that we have a lot of pictures that I've never shown here, so expect some new pieces as well.
And an old classic.
And another one, one my personal favorites that I'll be making a sequel to soon.
An urban set, one of many. Expect some big pictures of some new big urban projects soon.

Hiya Nerdfest, How's it going? I really appreciate the kind words from you and everyone else, it's inspiring and I make sure to pass them along to whatever grunts actually managed to get out of bed to help with my projects. There's an opportunity to grab a piece going right now, here's a pic of what we have available at this moment, a pump station that I assembled from scratch and spare parts by myself, it took a lot longer than expected because of all the pipes and weathering. Also you can always check my profile for current auctions.

I can't help but notice, for such a great scenery creator, your bases seem lacking
All the figures I use for models are from my way-back early days in the hobby, before bases were all the rage. I had a half dozen unfinished armies, then started getting into scenery and terrain more and more with the hopes of building the greatest table ever, then over time GW released new models for just about everything I was working on... even harlequins! Oh well. Some of our later figures I started paying a little more attention to, like my Necrons:
But my real mini-painting days are still ahead of me

That's actually not sand,in fact no sand was used on these pieces. These pictures show two models with sand dunes sculpted and finished with various techniques to get the realistic appearance of sand. The photographs are not retouched or enhanced at all besides light adjustment, it just photographs realistically.

I've been on a neodymium magneet shopping spree! I CAN'T STOP MAGNETIZING THINGS!
From now on, all utility poles are connected by a rare earth magnet, so they can be removed for storage and shipping, or to represent battle damage, or even better yet, swapped out for different styles of poles that we will be making in the future. (I plan to make some streetlamps in a gothic style, to fit different themes.)

I had an itch to do something awesome and chaotic and metal, so I decided to see what would happen if I took the simple concept of a modular river and mixed it with the forces of Chaos. This is what came out.

I'm loving the Chaos terrain piece. I wonder though, in the 6th and 7th photo down the strip the 'river' seems to have a little orange in it. Is this due to lighting or is actually there?
Also, how big is the overall piece? It looks like it could almost be an entire board!
Any orange you see is just a lighting effect, the blood is all dark red like good blood should be. All stretched out it's 4' of terrain, or enough to stretch across a standard gaming table.

This. How did you do this? I've been trying to get a halfway realistic looking desert for my Tyranid models for years now. That looks so amazing it's unbelievable.
Thank you, the desert dunes were actually some of my personal favorites, and I can't wait to do more from that line. With a few surprises of course. It's actually a pretty straightforward process, just carved foam and polyfilla, painted with some highlighting and pigment powder. The actual hard part was getting a feel for how desert dunes look and behave. I spent a lot of time staring at pictures of desert scenery and learning about the behavior of sand dunes. I scrapped a few pieces in process that didn't have the right curve, etc.

Commander Cain wrote: Incredible terrain as always! Great idea to compile all your greatest hits into one (thought I belive some are missing unless you do not show commissioned pieces on this thread?)
I also have a quick question, how do you go about making the newspapers and posters? I have tried and tried again to no effect as the detail is just never clear enough!
I do have a lot of pieces that aren't here yet, in fact even our website doesn't quite have everything up and visible yet, but I do plan on showing it all as we get the time to go over our archive of pictures and pick the best ones, re-size and upload.
That said, there are a ton of pictures in our webpage gallery, as well as here on Dakka. For those asking about tutorials, I'm going to be releasing more DIYs in the future with very specific details about how to achieve certain effects. As well as project logs of some of the more grand pieces we're working on behind the scenes right now. We already have a pretty good handful of plogs on our site, be sure to check them out.
Oh, as for the posters and such, we just use a good quality photo printer and paper. Nothing too specialized, just good enough resolution to put a high res image into a small print.

Synister_Intent wrote:I have to say that I love your work man. It is amazing. The detail is simply stunning. You have motivated me to build some of my own terrain but I have no idea where to start. Do you have any advise that you can give the lesser terrain builders like myself to get us started? Thank you again for your amazing work.
Thank you so much, I always love to hear that the work we do inspires others, I feel there should be a lot more emphasis on the terrain aspect of this hobby! As for how to get started, I would say try to come up with some plans and ideas, and then don't be afraid to go the extra mile. Research by looking at art or getting reference pictures of the kind of terrain you want to make and spend the extra time to detail it how you want it to look. Put the same kind of effort that you would in painting your best figures. Many people skim over terrain work because they want to get it on the table as fast as possible, but as our artist Mismuse is fond of saying "You don't want to be mediocre, do you?" We'll be releasing a lot of tutorials as time goes on, so stay tuned for more tips on our website and here on Dakka.
What do you use for the falling liquids? Is it stretched Necron sprue, or hobby water?
I use a few different techniques, but for the most part it's hot glue. I plan on doing a tutorial on this technique later on to show the details involved because I get asked about this a LOT.
Im noticing a lot of Hirst arts stuff in the terrain pieces, notably the desert market scene. Isn't reselling that kind of... you know... illegal?
I acutally only used Hirst products on that one particular desert market piece (which I should also add was inspired by Lut Gholien, the desert city from Diablo 2,) In the early days of our terrain making, we used a variety of products, from old toys to old terrain pieces and accessories that I already had. Since then, we've begun to sculpt, cast and use our own resin accessories and detail bits, so any crates, pallets, drums, skulls, pipe fittings, electric boxes, Etc. you see in any other pictures are from our first generation of original sculpts.
