Hey everyone,

I've been crazy busy for the past few months, new job, getting engaged, christmas... and I notice that in all that time noone has started a new Mafia/Genestealer game. Which surprises me, because they are such a huge amount of fun!

It might be that they are a fad that has gone stale, or maybe noone has the time to run one or play in one.

I said many months ago that I wanted to run one of these games, and I still do. It will be a basic old skool Mafia game, a 'detective', a 'doctor' and 2-3 'murderers' among the general population.

However I want to run it in the Fantasy setting, as I haven't seen any done there yet. It will be a Warhammer Fantasy setting, possibly using Dark Elves, Vampires or Chaos Warriors as the bad guys and an Inquisitor/Priest combo as good guys, but that will wait for now.

What I need from you all is yea or nay as to whether this is worth running. If you'd like to get involved, let me know, and I will plan something for you all. I'll set the limit as 12 players to begin with. If I get less than 9 interested, I won't run, if I get more than 12 I will consider increasing the number of players (it will all be first come first served, so if you want to play and know you're number 13 to ask, post anyway, you might get in)

The game of 'Mafia' http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mafia_game started out as a party game to be played with a whole load of friends in a room. It is about finding the 'killers' before all of the townspeople are dead.

In a game of 12 people you would have 2 of them be killers (the Mafia). Each day the group sits and talks, tries to work out who might be a killer, and at the end of each day they can choose to 'lynch' someone. After the lynching a person's identity and role is revealed.

Each night the killers can choose anyone they like and remove them from the game. The two killers know each others identity, and must agree on the person they will lynch.

There are 2 people in the town who are able to perform actions during the night too, the doctor and the detective. The detective can ask about the affiliation of any person and find out whether they are good or evil. The doctor can choose one person in the room (including themselves) and protect them, however they are not allowed to protect the same person for 2 nights in a row, so they have to be careful how they use their powers. The detective and the doctor do NOT know who each other are, so are unable to work together unless they work it out from daytime conversation.

In the forum based game, each 'day phase' lasts either 2 weeks in real time or ends when a certain percentage of people in the town have voted to lynch any one person. During each day phase anyone can talk and say whatever they want, but they have to be careful. The detective and the doctor must try to protect the most vulnerable members of the group and steer them towards killing the evil doers while trying to stay alive themselves.

All day phase communication MUST take place in the official thread. Talking outside of the thread would give players an unfair advantage, the killers should not be able to communicate during the day as this would arouse suspicion and everyone else must remain communal (to keep it true to the original party game).

Each 'night phase' is generally a couple of days or until all people with night abilities have used them.

At daybreak the game runner declares if anyone died the previous night and tells what their loyalty was.

There are a lot of previous threads which show a game in progress. They are generally very furious at the beginning, but become more tactical as time wears on. It's only as much work as you want it to be, you can post as little or as much as you want, but the more people get involved, the more fun they will have.

ROLES:
Townsperson - you have no powers or abilities except your vote during the day to lynch somebody. if you can't find the bad guys you will die, but even if you do die, it doesn't matter, better you than the doctor/detective! You have to pressure and push and ask a lot of questions, you have to be seen to be working towards getting a pro-town lynch. Townsperson is more boring than other roles, but you are totally expendable, if you can take down a killer with you then you're a martyr to the town.

Killer - you have to act like a townsperson during the day, try to be seen to attack people, but not too hard, you don't want to be seen as over zealous. Also beware of 'bandwagonning', being the last person to kill someone who turns out to be innocent.

Doctor - you have to keep the innocent people safe, but cannot save the same person repeatedly, so choose your target carefully. Stopping the killers from taking down a vocal member of the community can often be as useful as saving yourself, but you need to stay alive. If you can work out who the detective is you will become a powerful team.

Detective - every night you get to find out the true loyalty of one other person. You cannot kill during the night, but during the day you can try to use what you know to save an innocent or lynch a killer. However you have to be careful, if you seem to know too much then you may look like a killer yourself, and the killers may catch on that you're the detective, at which point you become a prime target (and the doctor can only protect you every other night, assuming he figures out who you are).


Hope this helps. The wiki link above explains all of this, but it might help to see it rewritten in a form which is used in the forum games rather than the party game.

I like the idea of a fantasy setting.

Also, I think it is best to keep things simple rather than come up with new convoluted rules.

Hey guys, very glad to see you two getting involved, if it is a worry for people I will vet the list of who gets in and will get tough on people who spam the thread with nonsense (insofar as the OP can get tough, it'll be about respect more than anything).

There will be no special rules, it will be a back to basics game, I am only giving it a setting which hasn't been done before to give it a bit of flavour.

I will mark you both as wanting to play and give you plenty of notice of when it will start via PM.

And another thing, if the bad guys are chaos/vampires/dark elves and the good guys are inquisitors/priests then wouldn't it be kinda obvious as to who's who?

The races are picked by the game master. And it's not a roleplay, it's a game, so you don't go around proclaiming your role if you're a bad guy. Everyone's a good guy

Sorry, it may well be a little confusing as one thinks in terms of the Chaos Warrior being hung about with chaotic icons and roaring blasphemies while hacking about him, the Dark Elf having distinguishing features and the vampire not being able to go outside in the daylight. However the conditions which I set for you will mean that whatever evil race is selected they will be able to hide themselves easily amongst you and act perfectly normal. A Chaos Warrior for instance could hide himself amidst a Norse village if he wore his clothes carefully about him to hide any tattoos, and pulling at other's clothing in a Norse village would usually end up with you wearing an axe through your skull! Similarly a group of peasants hiding in a dark dank cave from a rampaging Orc horde outside would not be able to spot a clever Von Carstein vampire hiding in their midst.

There are always ways of hiding, and I will think carefully before I describe the situation.

And yes, this is NOT a RP game, it is a game of detective work and working out the way people play the game.

I will send out a couple more emails to some of the olde gang, if any of you would like to do the same that would be cool. I don't think we're too far off the 12 players now

Maybe Dark Elf assassins or something, the characters are really just there to add flavor to it.
