I noticed this thread above us in the 40k section and then searched here to see the last one was before 8th edition. So I am curious on what your thoughts were and to see how much they have changed between 7th and 8th.

I should have come prepared though. I don't have any units to put down at the moment for any of my armies.

Also I would like to see what the favorite and least favorite units are too. Is everyone's favorite based on what is the best?

You know I'm noticing a theme here. The worst choices all have a hell of a lot of flavour, that's really too bad.

My choices

Lizardmen

Best unit - slann (nuff said)
Worst - for me, regular skinks in rank and file (without the kroxigor upgrades)....they are NOT useless, but I would rather use skirmishing skinks, and it is hard to justify razordons, as BS based shooting took a hit in 8th ed...

Empire

Best unit - in 8th ed, Mortars (especially with engineer support)
Worst - hard to say, the empire units are ALL useful..but in 8th ed I just can't justify having an empire general on a griffon..too large a target not to get shot to bits, and it cannot negate rank bonuses like before...

Sad but true. I'm noticing it too.

Unfortunately, I can't really comment about on best and worst in 8th. I will, however, pick my favorite and least favorite based on look or flavor.

Brets
favorite - pegasus knights
least - can't think of their name at the moment, the ones that carry a fake grail knight.

Dark Elf
favorite - corsairs
least - executioners

Dwarf
favorite - rangers and ironbreakers
least - no variety and I love the slayer models but was always frustrated with their performance

Goblins (I don't own any yet, but I just have to say my favorites anyway)
favorite - hoppers and fanatics
least - regular goblins or wolf riders

beastmen (same boat as the goblins)
favorite - gors
least - razorgor

Warriors of Chaos
favorite - chaos knights
least - dragon ogres (models) spawn (too chaos )

Wood Elf
favorite - waywatchers, wardancers (flavor)
least - too many trees (small, medium, and large)

I just realized I didn't add anything to the thread. I wonder how many of these favorites would also be the best units or how many least favorites would be the worst?

Least - Bolt Throwers
"Best" - Xbows with Shields
"Worst on Table" - Executioners with or without BSB Hag
"Worst due to 8th" - Blackguard (i would say executioners but they were already bad and blackguard got hit hard in 8th)

Warriors of Chaos

Favorite - Knights/Trolls
Least - Hellcannon
"Best" - Warriors
"Worst on Table" - Spawn
"Worst due to 8th" - Spawn

All right, I'll take a stab. Trying to go for a point-for-point sort of take here, Best/Worst, and characters not included.

Beastmen- Tuskgor Chariot/Cygor

Brettonia- Field Trebuchet/Grail Relique

Daemons- Flamers/Plague Bearers

Dark Elves- Hydra/Executioners

Dwarfs- Warrior/Flame Cannon

Empire- Halberdiers/Greatswords

High Elves- Pheonix Guard/Repeater Bolt Thrower

Lizardmen- Saurus/Razordons

Ogre Kingdoms- Bulls/Leadbelchers

Orcs and Goblins- Orc Boy/Spear Chukka

Skaven- Hell Pit Abomination/Warpgrinder

Tomb Kings- Skeleton Archer/Tomb Giant

Vampire Counts- Grave Guard/Bat Swarms

Warriors of Chaos- Marauders/Dragon Ogres

Wood Elves- Treekin/Eternal Guard

In 7th, I'd have to say the best unit in the game were War hounds. A 30pt unit that could capture table quarters, kill units that flee through them, hunt war machines, screen other units, redirect charges, and occasionally attack stuff. Man.

I always love the worst units. Speaking of which I am surprised more people have not voted for swarms. They are terrible. In general they are fairly expensive per wound, have low toughness and no save and take wounds be every point they lose combat by.

I will have to work up a proper list.

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Here is my worst of the worst list:

Bretonnia: Mounted Yeoman

Dwarfs: Iron Breakers

Tomb Kings: Tomb Swarms

Empire: Knights

High Elves: Silver Helms

Wood Elves: Warhawk Riders

Lizardmen: Jungle Swarms

Ogre Kingdoms: Slave Giant

Dark Elves: Assassin

Skaven: Rat Swarm

Beastmen: Chaos Spawn

Orcs: Snotling Pump Wagon

Daemons: Herald of Slaanesh

Vampire Counts: Bat Swarms

Warriors of Chaos: Chaos Spawn

I only play Dark Elves and do not feel I have the proper experience to comment on other races.

Tactically

Best: Repeater Crossbows with Shields.
Worst: Repeater Bolt Throwers

Aesthetically

Best: Black Guard
Worst: I'm tempted to go with the flow and say the 'squatting spearelves/rxbowmen)' but I honestly hate what they've done to the Corsairs with their new 'spiky pirate' look.

Fluffwise

Best: Tie between Dreadlords and Cold One Knights.
Worst: Ummm, the fluff is why I love the Dark Elves, but I'd probably go for ... harpies? I suppose?

Brets

Favorite: Longbowmen
Least: Grail Knights (Little too good at drawing fire, little too poor at suviving it)
"Best": Prophetess of the Lady (Sorry what do you mean that big block of archers is now S4 T4 lead by a S7 T7 A4 Lady???)
"Worst on Table" Men at Arms (Expensive and currently ranking as the worst infantry in the game)
"Worst due to 8th Edition" Pegasus Knights.....losing the ability to break support units realy did this unit in for me, far too expensive for a dedicated warmachine hunter.

Dwarfs

Best: Hammerers. With no auto-break from fear outnumbering and actually getting to swing, they basically die to the last man while churning out great damage.

Worst: Flame Cannon. Inexplicable why they removed its extended range.

I'm not sure if I' say that all swarms are terrible. Two or three bases of a Skaven rat swarm can easily take out war machines and tie up lone characters (even ones on dragons) for a turn or so. Jungle swarms do the same thing at more cost, but are also better at it.

...of course, Gutter Runners, Giant Rats, and any kind of Skinks can do all of that, too. And other stuff. So I'll agree that swarms are bad, but I'd hesitate to call them the worst.

...except bat swarms.

Empire:

Best: Wizards. Surprising, I know, but my wizards have been men of the respective match in 90 percent of all my 8th edition games. Be it Life or Light in all-comers, Death vs Skaven, Metal vs Brets and WOC, or simple fireball-throwing L1 maniacs vs pesky skirmishers, they always punch their weight and often way above it.

Worst: State Troops. Yes, I know, I'm tactically challenged and my dice take sweet revenge at the cruel way I treat them but these units have let me down more often than you can shake a stick at. 10 Slaves vs 10 Swordsmen? I lose 6, he loses 1. Halberdiers, regardless of formation vs. half the points of Slaves (by design or through mortar hits)? I lose 250 points, he loses none. Halberdiers vs Corsairs? Dead. Versus HPA? Dead. Slaves with death frenzy, spears and horde? I'm sorry, but I know the result beforehand.
