I just noticed on here http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?catId=cat440079a&prodId=prod900162a that the fantasy orcs regiment has been cut down from (was it 16, 18, or 20) models to 10, for like only 50p off the same price!!!!

I don't think that boxs of ten is a good idea, but look at the size of the kit! 130 pieces, thats lots more than most kits get.

Yes - probably 5 of each two sprues - they are also way old! I would love it if GW cut down box sizes, maybe even to boxes of 5, but actually make them cheap. The current box of 10 boyz should be around £12 - that would be very nice, yet still dearer than the old box, meaning GW would get a bigger profit, and it would be better for us!

I keep getting the distinct feeling someone at GW prefers Goblins to Orcs, and is working hard to make sure Orcs are not especially playable. The new Army Book is pretty brutal to the Orc Boyz as well, in my opinion.

In case you havn't noticed, this is how GW operates. Their goal is to increase their prices to maximize something (no one's really sure, hell, not even GW. All anyone knows is that it sure as hell isn't 'profits'), and then out-price as many people as possible.

Yeah, we had a couple of guys who were quite anxiously awaiting the new book and figs. Then it came out, they looked at the prices of the new book and new figs, and are now selling their old Orcs and getting out of the army.

Uh, you sure you're looking at the regular Orc boyz and not the new Savage Orcs? When I click on the regular Orc boyz it says 19 Orcs...which is normal.

On the Aus site, there still appears to be the old 19 Orcs Regiment being sold, but I've heard in other countries they're cutting the size of the regiment down to 10 while keeping the same price. It's such a shame too, since I want to start O&G so badly...
Does make sense to nearly double the cost. There isnt even any new sprues/bits or anything. Savage Orcs I can understand, they come with a craptonne of extra bits..
Why GW, why?

The US site says they are still the same box size of 19 models. Nothing has changed. Must mean the Savage Orcs, which are BEAUTIFUL, I might add

This nonsense misses the point of a regiment box. What's the use of buying a box if you only get half a unit in it. WHen they started the plastic regiments they all had 16-20 figures in them, you bought the box and had a whole unit for your army. That was great. Buying a box for nearly £20 and finding that you barely have enough for half a unit is somewhat off putting. Is that clever use of customer psychology? I don't think so, because you get the impression of cost when you have to buy multiple boxes to get a single product, or in this case a single usable regiment. But hey, maybe I'm talking nonsense and halving the contents of the boxes and keeping the prices the same is a winning strategy. THis is worse than a price increase, that's usually a few quid, this almost doubles the cost of the miniatures. Crikey.

Just another reason to get away from GW and look into all the other great games out there. It still amazes me all the people who constantly complain about GWs prices, terrible rules, etc...yet they still continue to buy GW products. Just stop. Play something else. GW is not the end -all, be-all of gaming.
Sure, I love their minis, but between the prices and my general dislike for the current edition of 40k, Ive moved on to other things.

This would actually deter me from buying GW now. I'd rather buy Mantic and play with Warhammer with them, for the core troops at the least.

Wow, it's strange that it was changed on the UK site and not on the US one... probably, they're realizing that who in their right mind can afford to get savage orcs, when the normal counterparts are basically half the price! I wonder if the kits weren't selling, and so they thought raising the prices on the normal version would solve that...?
Will be interesting to see if this is some sort of abberation, or if it follows through for other countries, too. Are they going to go to the trouble of re-boxing the orc regiment with half the sprues to enact this?
The problem is, fantasy requires SO many models, especially in 8th edition with large blocks. If GW isn't careful, they'll turn people off from starting a new army as the books are released, which is the vital hook that makes them swallow the price pill.
I think Aduro's desciption probably is true for many O&G enthusiasts, who have often played the army for several editions... for a "horde" unit that price is just crazy! And to retroactively do it to the older box is just cruel... and I would think bad business sense in the end, but I guess we'll have to wait and see.
Edit: I also agree this is just giving companies like Mantic a foothold, which is great from my perspective... but how does GW expect to compete for armies that sometimes needs Hundreds of these models, when they're pricing theirs this way. Skeletons, ghouls/zombies, and orcs look to only be viable at Mantic's prices to me now, and with the TK release coming up, GW is really giving them a boost by pricing themselves out of contention this way. Which is a shame in one sense... because those savage orcs really are eye-popping sculpts, imo.

I can confirm that the battalion and regiment boxes are being repackaged, to what size? unsure.
ATM they would be priced 29$ and 90$ tentatively.
Its absurd though what they are doing, playing swarm armies.. are punishing these days..
I mean look at the blood angels, 33$ for five models.. but you are getting.. tons of bits?

How is GWS competing with Mantic in the areas where they have a clear analogue? I couldn't imagine, for example, buying Tomb Kings from GWS - 16 soldiers for $35, or 20 for $25? Not exactly a close contest. Some of the GWS models are nicer, but not substantially so, in some cases....

Especially in the case of horde armies, where with the exception of centre pieces, most of the models won't get much attention to begin with.

The undead are the only race where I'd say it's completely one sided. For the Elves and Dwarves, they made changes to the physical appearance of the races in ways that you're either going to love or hate.
They did the same with the Orcs, but the biggest problem I have with them is easily fixed: this is what the 3-up looks like before and after the lower lip has been raised.

Hi all.
I have got to agree the choice of Mantic for undead minatures is a 'no brainer'.(Pun intended. )
My last purchase..Mantics Alternative undead warhost...
20 skeletons (with command),20 Revnants ('grave guard' ,with command )and 20 Ghouls for ......£30.
NOT each regiment but for all 60 minatures.
(And the Mantic 'Army Deals' are even better value !)
And the vampire lord on undead pegasus is just so cool!( IMO.)
