Okay, so a new song thread.

Random songs you like are often enjoyable, but these threads are always better if you stick to the theme. It's about finding and sharing stuff within particular limits.

In this case, songs which are catchy; have a hook or a melody that gets stuck in your head, maybe even an upbeat tune, but about dark or depressing things happening. Particularly bad or low times in one's life.

Also, if you could use Spoiler tages instead of just embedding youtube videos, that'll help pages load faster. They often turn to molasses if the entire page is full of videos. If you use Spoiler tags, feel free to share more than one video at a time if you like.

So, here are my first two selections.

I've been enjoying the hell out of new Low for a few months now. Great track.

I'm not sure if this is really what you had in mind, but I think its pretty catchy:

Death Cab for Cutie "Someday you will be Loved."

This is sitting in the dark while crying alone music. Fo sho!

Closer to what you mean:

Promise Ring "Why Did We Ever Meet?"

Great calls on the Blink 182, Lou Reed (just watched Trainspotting again this week; so brilliant), and Death Cab.

Pol, I actually don't get that vibe off Someday You Will Be Loved. Remember that the singer is talking down to/reassuring a girl he doesn't love and is abandoning. It's definitely dark, but it's not about the singer's despair; more pitying and looking down on someone else. That's a great CD, all the way through.

Mesopotamia. The Kingdom Where we Secretly Reign.

This is a song about a guy relapsing into alcoholism, but makes it sound wonderful and and fun. It seems like an upbeat song about something potentially dark, and if I may say so, it's quite catchy as well.

Mesopotamia. The Kingdom Where we Secretly Reign.

I could really go on and on about the glory of TMBG. Ever since I saw them on Tiny Toons back in oh... 1995 they've pretty much been my favorite band of all time.

To keep with the theme and not turn this into a TMBG appreciation thread (which I am not opposed to) I will offer this song by Johnathan Coulton.

yeah, I just really like the song and think more people should hear it. It's one of the rare emo songs that's not self pitying, it's about a pretty cold hearted bastard. The line "I can't pretend I felt any regret" might end up on my tombstone (if some women have their way). Very dark.

there are how many Brits on this site and I have to post Joy Division's "Love will tear us Apart"? For shame, chaps.

It's a song about doomed love performed by a band that took it's name from the the groups of Jewish women forced to serve as prostitutes at Nazi concentration camps.

I think JD might have been too obvious. You could practically select their entire catalog.

Some great picks. Alby, "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away" is awesome. Squig_Herder, Pixies and Pumpkins FTW!

I suppose MC Frontalot's "Goth Girls" might qualify...
