not sure if this is the right forum, feel free to move it if it isn't in the right spot.
Anyways I'm in london(near canary wharf) for the week and was wondering if anyone knew the easiest way to get to warhammer world from London?

Thanks for looking!

Hi, fuegan17.
As far as I know WHW is in Nottingham...(unless there is another one in London?)
So if you catch a train to Nottingham , its about a 10 miniute taxi ride to WHW from Nottingham train station.(Dependng on traffic.)

Thanks! yeah I wish there was one in London but sadly there isn't. Also which train may I ask? all the forms of public transportation here are quite confusing to me; buses, tubes, DLR, london overground, etc. is alot at first.

St Pancras goes to Nottingham (east Midland line). Nearest tube to St Pancras is Kings Cross from memory.

Reichstag - because GWHQ looks a little imposing appearantly like said building in Berlin - read out of place.

Notprop has it correct. Go to Kings Cross/St Pancras and take the East Midlands train to Nottingham. It usually takes about 2/3 hours so make sure you leave relatively early.
Now these directions are from what I've used getting there:

1: Exit Nottingham station
2: Make your way to the canal towpath
3: Follow the towpath for about 30 mins
4: Soon, you'll walk over a large arch bridge which passes by a resturant and canal boat parking area to the left.
5: You'll soon pass under a couple more bridges, I believe it's the second one after you pass the resturant mentioned above.
6: Pass under the bridge and you'll see a stairway leading up to the road.
7: Turn right once you get onto the road.
8: Take the next right. You should see it there.

Edit: Those directions are only for walking. For driving, I have no idea.

Check http://www.tfl.gov.uk/ to find the way to get from wherever you are to St Pancras station. It probably will involve Docklands Light Railway and the Tube.

Check www.thetrainline.com for train times and ticket prices from St Pancras to Nottingham. From what I can see, the best train tomorrow is 10:30 in the morning and gets to Nottingham at 12:26, with no changes. You could be in Warhammer World by 1 o'clock, eating lunch at Bugman's Bar.

The return fare is £52.50 Super Off-Peak Return. You can't travel before 10:30. It will let you catch more or less any train in the evening to get back.

I would avoid going on Friday because there will be lots of disruption due to the Royal Wedding.

The best way from the Nottingham station to the venue will be taxi. Get a card from the taxi driver so you can call them to fetch you at the end of your day.

Buy your train tickets ASAP (online!) as the price rises dramatically the closer you get to the travel date. I bought mine 3 weeks in advance and saved over 50%.

Although honestly I don't think the trip is worth it. I was in London myself last year and put 1 of my 3 days aside for Warhammer World. I was there for maybe 3 hours and that included having lunch at Bugman's, then I got bored. There's really not much to see besides the miniatures hall (not nearly as big as you'd expect) and some really good-looking tables in the gaming hall.

There is no FLGS mood there, people come in small groups, play their match and leave. I didn't see any mingling, any chatting.

The other sad part was seeing some of the famous tables featured in WD and Army Books worn by years of gaming.

Ouch.

For a 2-3 hour train trip? What's the frequency of services like? What is the service like? Comfy seats or commuter rack?

(Where I live is the 2nd largest city in my state, around 2-3 hours north-ish of the state capital (and our LARGEST city). Train fare for that trip is $15.60 (or around £7) and that covers any and all trains in between from midnight to 5am following day).

i can vouch for this... though Sydney's CityRail usually compensates with sub-standard hygiene/cleanliness andfrequent breakdowns and "trackwork"

Somewhere in south-central England.

In the UK you can get a cheaper fare if you book one or two weeks in advance and choose specific off-peak services with a non-flexible ticket.

The disadvantage is loss of spontaneity and if you miss your train, your ticket becomes invalid and you have to buy a full price ticket.

The highest price fares are ridiculous. A fully flexible business class (i.e. 1st class) ticket from London to Liverpool -- about a two hour journey -- is £416.

Not necessarily true. When I was up there, people waiting to get their orders filled kept wandering over while we were playing and striking up a conversation.

For such a long trip, I'd only recommend going if you're up with some friends and you're planning on getting some gaming in. As lord_blackfang said, there's not enough there to justify a full day if you're not participating.

I have to agree with some of the posters above. I took a 'pilgrimage' up there a couple of years ago while I was in london for work.

It was sort of neat but there weren't even any limited edition figs there for purchase other than Bugman.

With that said, if anyone is close by and would be inclined to mail me a Bugman's Bar game I will gladly pay all the expenses.

Although there is a second 'mode' of rail travel that does connect the cities with other cities and towns via a "high speed" (fewer stops between locations and a higher average speed) fewer and more comfortable seats, food/beverage services available ('countrylink') that does cost more.
(cityrail is the equivalent of your "underground" or "tube" (except mostly ground level), Countrylink is like the connecting services to outer areas that you have (London to other cities), essentially.)

We can travel by train between state capitals (10-12 hour trips - at least Brisbane-Melbourne are) for around $70 each way - minimum normal 7 day ahead booking (over 1000km) which is comparable to the budget airlines (without the additional airport and fuel taxes). Shorter distances (Canberra, Federal capital) are around $30 each way (minimum normal). Canberra is a 3-4 hour trip at an average speed of 100km/h (not incomparable to London/Nottingham)
Compared to these prices, I'm inclined to believe that - according to all of the UK doco series where people catch trains to get from London to (place in Scotland, or Wales, or Liverpool or Newcastle, Sheffield, etc), that the services are closer to our "countrylink" than our "cityrail".

If it was having to catch a "tube train" all the way, the prices would be a tad ... excessive (and I've been to blighty during Thatcher's reign, the Poll-tax riots were surprising - I've NEVER seen that many people in one place before).

When I was there, since I was in the Reading area, we drove up.

It's quite hard to find by car in my experience, the map on the GW site is hopeless and the Lenton estate is confused and poorly signposted. There's a North and South estate which GW didn't mention last time I checked their site looking for directions. I got lost in the wrong one. Many industrial estates have a rough map on a board and list the various companies, this one doesn't.

I got a Bugman mini when I was there last.

That's pretty nice. Baltimore to NYC was over $200 last I checked (for a round trip), and it's a 2-3 hour trip (The Accela is generally closer to 2, but significantly more. Also nicer seats...).

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.

We just sacrificed to the satnav deity - seemed to work. The honking great Aquila and SM statue in Lenton helped, once we got to the site.

If you bang Willow road, ng7 into your sat nav rather than Lenton lane you should find it much easier.

Yes WHW is out of town, and to a new visitor it is a bind to get to. I managed to find 3 different ways to get to it when I first started visiting and didn't make the conection for a while (coming across from Germany at the time). As suggested get to Notts early, because if you get bored at GW there is always the Castle and the good pubs around it. WHW is what you make of it, chat to people and you will (mostly) get a friendly responce.

I hope you make it, as it is worth having a look around. I should be about thurs of friday evening depending on work

I managed to drive there okay last year (with Ketara's help!), easily drove to my hotel then got lost on that damned estate trying to go a short cut and spent the next hour or two walking round it again. I eventually found a cab who drove me all of 500 yards to GW, I am confident I still would not have found it again by foot!

I spent a couple of days playing there and it was good, the minitaures hall etc were a bonus to walk around betwwen pints in bugmans. It all needs a refurb though IMHO.

Hmmm... I'm thinking about tripping to London for some days (maybe this summer, not sure). I had thought about staying one night in Nottingham. Is the city worth to see? If the only interesting thing is Warhammer World, it would pretty boring. I've seen that Sherwood is a Natural Park. Any opinion on this?

I've just checked a couple of websites. But one could guess there are buses... or something. Sherwood's website is a bit confusing for me, it has a map wich marks interesting locations, buy they seem to be pretty far from each other. I guess I would have to choose one or two :\

BTW, in Google Maps it looks like tiny, I can only see vegetable gardens

Nottingham is a really good city, there is the castle, the caves, the shopping is good and of course warhammer world.

If you hire a car Sherwood is about half an hour drive from the centre of notts but its also pretty close to Maelstrom games and they have a really good selection.
