Hello all,

Just thought I'd share my latest project. Hadn't kept up on WH releases in awhile so imagine my surprise when I found a display stack of Space Hulk games in my local GW store staring me in the face.... grabbed a couple of copies without looking at the price... had to have it as I was a bit too young to buy the first 2 editions, but old enough to have played the PC games... I was very impressed with the quality of the terminators iin this edition (considering the amount that you get for the price!) and thought I would try and give em a paintjob they deserved. Doing my own take on the blood angels color scheme. I haven't been painting for "that" long so could really use some advice or pointers on my skill at painting NMM and cloth parchments... as you can see from the pics below, my NMM gold looks too yellow and my NMM steel looks a bit too flat... which is why Im leaving all the eagles, skulls, iconography on the termies till last! any suggestions are welcome! My color scheme method:

Primed Chaos Black
Base coat of thinned Red Gore
Wide Shading of a 1:4 mix of Skull White & Red Gore
Thin Highlight of Blood Red
Extreme Highlight of 1:1 Skull White/Blood Red

More pics to come! I actually posted this thread on LO, but for some reason it takes days for it to update... ah well!

You've done a great jobs on the reds so far, one tip is to make sure on chips and scratches, highlight only the bottom edge. I notice particularly on Claudio that you are going around the entire perimeter with the highlights and it is distracting from an otherwise excellently executed red!

Thanks for the tip, I'll try that out, it was kind of hard to me to discern exactly what should have an bright/extreme highlight... Claudio was the first termie I painted from the set....

Just a quick update

Another attempt at NMM on the skull and chains... primed chaos black, then a mix of chaos black/fortress gray, highlight of fortress gray and skull white... still looks a bit "flat" rather than NMM? Help me? Please?

Trying my hand at painting white for the leg and shoulder eagles... primed chaos black, then layer of regal blue, layer of commando khaki, highlight of skull white

My favorite thing so far is actually the severed head of the genestealer!

Looking good though, I really like the fact that you are spending so much time on these guys. I've seen some not so awesome space hulk termies in my area.

Thanks,

These look fantastic, you have great skill. I do agree with tom though, your highlights should try to come from one source

I quite like your NMM, i have only seen gold done before. But i think you've done it quite well. And your Terminators look really nice overall as well

If you want you can reference mine for chipping weathering in my sig. Basically, for large chips, the highlight should be along the inner edge of chip opposite the lightsource. Unless you have done something Zenithal, this will be along the bottom edge, towards the ground.

Picture the chips as depressions and it helps. The side facing the light would not have a highlight, but it would cast a shadow (a very small, faint one) into the chip itself as it would be slightly raised (surface with paint is thicker than surface without paint), whereas the opposite side would be higher, therefore it receives a highlight and does not cast a shadow because the area behind it is level.

Another update... trying my hand at painting the chest eagles in metallics for these two until I get better at NMM gold... or I might just stick with metallics for the gold... I think I'm getting a little better at NMM steel rather than gold...
Anyways... just followed the guide on the GW site for this... primed Chaos Black, thinned layer of Shining Gold, watered down Scorched Brown, more shining gold, thinned burnished gold, highlight of mithril silver

Nice work on the termie broadcast. Good job getting a copy from your GW, I thought they had all sold out by now. Looking forward to seeing more of them painted.

Thanks, actually I guess I didn't make it more clear, I had picked these up when they released the new edition in 2009... I was floored when I walked into my local gaming store and saw a pyramid of these... I had missed out on buying a 1st and 2nd edition Space Hulk game when I was kid so I definitely wasn't gonna miss out this time, so I snatched up 3 copies!

Ah that makes more sense. I was on the fence about buying a copy when I was at my LGS back around xmas time of '09. Decided not to since I couldn't see myself playing the game but am kicking myself for not buying a copy now. Anyhow, thanks to MajorTom and ebay, I do have 3 of the termies and plan to paint them soon. Your pics have definitely been pushing me towards getting them started.

Great work on these, you can tell you are very organised and taking good care and attention when painting them up! they really look great, the red is excellent and kudos for having a crack at nmm, looks good what you have done so far, looking forward to more updates on these guys!

1. Primed Chaos Black
2. Base coat of watered down Red Gore to get a dark red finish with still some black showing through
3. Another coat of watered down Red Gore to get areas to show more red than black
4. Mix 1 part Skull White with 3 to 4 parts Red Gore, thin it down with water, paint a wide shading band where you will be highlighting.
5. Paint a thin highlight using Blood Red
6. Mix 1 part Skull White with 1 to 2 parts Blood Red to make the extreme highlight

Another daily update... just finishing off Sgt Gideon... I'm not even going to attempt any writing on the parchment (dang butterfingers.....) until I practice on something... I think I'm getting a little better at painting the wings white (On the shins and on top of his head)... my current method is to base it regal blue, then put on thinned commando khaki, then bleached bone, then white... although I "think" I might try a different method of basing it commando khaki, thinned bleach bone and highlighted white and then put a wash of very thin ultramarine blue into the recesses? What do you guys suggest?

Gideon looks great. I think your first method is the best way about it. Doing a wash after you put down the base colours and highlights will mean you'll have to spend more time going back and cleaning it up. It definitely won't be as clean as what you've got going on with Gideon which looks ace. Heck with my models I'm too lazy to do multiple colours, I usually go from black base to white right away.

Done! Well except for the lettering... my practice attempts look like I wrote the letters using my toes... and I have no feet...

Another update:

Just finishing off Omnio and Noctis. Trying my hand for the first time at glow effects on Monio's hand auspex. I think I'm failing miserably at it... all I'm doing is taking a shade of green that's darker than the auspex screen and drybrushing a circular area around it. Any help/advice would be more than welcome!

Update! Now that my shipment from the good folks of Battleroadgames has arrived, I guess I can start the task of actually starting my BA army.

Cripes... I've got a lot to paint...

Started on the Chaplain this weekend:

Primed and started on highlighting...

Starting the rest of the details

Almost done and trying out a different camera mode, looks more ummm for lack of a better word, "Real"

Under different lightning and camera mode

Just a couple marines with the base coloring done and some minor shading...2 almost down, 70+ to go...

Nice. I too love your red. I love the Space Hulk termies. I've got the dead termie on a throne I intend to use as an objective marker and hope I can do a similar red.
