Obviously yes, it hovers, as a skimmer. But what i mean is, how does it know where to go and what to shoot? there are no view holes that i know of. And even then i have never heard of any crew members controlling it? is it literally just a giant hunk of living metal like the warriors themselves?

Don't question the gigntic fortress of mockery... just curse it.
And, considering it has the living metal special rule i would take a wild guess and say that yes. It is made from living metal.

I think of it as being a block of living metal where every molecule is a computer chip. It's self aware in the same way the T1000's living metal is aware, IMO.
It flies by telling the laws of reality to shut up and sit down

LOL at SC reference. But arent pylons what they have at the very top of the pyramid (if it is, then they solved one of protoss's basic challanges) You could make the same arguement for wraithlords, they have no eyes but yet they can fight in CC. Course, imagine that converstaion during the early years of Necrons: "We need a main battle tank yet a mobile command structure... Any ideas?" "Why not a giant, floating pyramid with a gun on each side and a big crystal on top? And just to really screw with our opponent's head, we will call it a Monolith despite the fact it is not a flat rectanglur object!" "Brilliant! And we will make it able to teleport us out of CC! Oh, and I heard a rumor of these things called melta and lance weaponery, lets just go ahead and counter that, a little bit of foresight on my part don't ya think?" "Great idea! Shoot, only thing that could beat us now is if our gods tricked us, but what are the odds of that happening?"

Its Necron tech which is essentially magic. Why magic you ask? I have heard people say that Necron starships use an FTL system where they cancel "inertia" which is a part of the law of physics. Any one enjoys 40k knows that it pisses all over the laws of physics. Their is your answer.
|
Stated by Grey Templar:The Ward of the Codices
"It began, with the writing of the Great Codices,
2 were given to the Eldar. Immortal, Capricious, and most farsighted of all,
2 also to Chaos. Traitorous, Deceitful, Servants of the Dark Gods,
3 to the Xenos races. T'au, Orks, and Necrons. the Young, the Beast, and the Spiteful,
7 to the race of men. Servents of the God Emperor, the Inheritors of the Galaxy.
But they were all of them, decieved. for another Codex was written…
In the Land of Ward'or, in the Fires of Mount Doom, the Dark Lord Matthew wrote in secret, a Master Codex, to rule all the others. One by one, all the armies of the other Codices fell to the power of the Codex, and from this Darkness, none could see hope.
But there were some, who resisted. a Last Alliance of Men and Xenos took up arms against the forces of Ward'or and on the Slopes of Mount Doom they fought for the freedom of 40k." |

'Any sufficiently complicated technology is indistinguishable from magic'
Basically the ability to tell reality to park it and knock it off.
Thats why I love Necrons. In game their tech is mediocre at best, but out game it's awesome

I'm guessing that the crystal on top controls it. My more obscure theory is that it contains a Necrontyr soul, which explains it's seeing everything.
Or possibly it's magic. And driven by Harry Potter's great-grandchild many times over.

Unless you are bringing in troops from reserve, which you have no control over and which shuts down the only decent armament on the thing, your troops have to be very close to the Lith.
Also, as there are no other transports in the army your troops will be walking along at a terminally slow pace, unlike every other army which has transports for carrying squads to where they need to go, at at least double the Lith's move, granting them the protection of several inches of armour plating.
I have no problem with using liths as my troop transporters and accept the fact that they are slow and can't carry troops directly. I just get tired of people pointing to the Monolith and screaming 'cheese OMG so overpowered etc' without bearing in mind that the crons have no other vehicles, and no other solid antitank.
The landraider, which is pretty much equivilent, isn't also your army's only viable way of getting troops from point A to point B at above a walk The Lith is ok, for it's points, but i would love the Necrons to have an actual troop transport of some kind (preferably a fast skimmer) so that my troops can actually reach the other side of the board by turn 5

Having a transport wouldn't make sense fluffwise however...
If they could get a light vehicle that could teleport a single unit anywhere each turn then that might make sense but otherwise...

That would be fine too
Something like the DE webway portals mechanic would also work, creating a 'board edge' to bring reserves from. Ideally some kind of drop-podded gate that reserves could then enter through.
Given that the Necron fluff is soon to be in the same state as a new convict staring at his new cellmate, Bubba 'meat tenderizer' McWeems i'm not holding a lot of hope out for fluff consistency.
