Hilarious life-sized Barbie doll demonstrates the bizarre proportions of the beloved toy:

http://tosh.comedycentral.com/blog/2011/04/19/life-sized-barbie-doll-does-not-make-me-feel-better-about-my-own-body/

Hamilton College student Galia Slayen created a life-sized Barbie with proportions based on the doll's measurements.

Galia built the giant-boobed beast for National Eating Disorder Awareness Week in an effort to start a conversation about unrealistic body images.

Life-sized Barbie stands 6' tall with a 39" bust, 18" waist and 33" hips.

Unrealistic? Sure. Sexy? Definitely.

You think life-sized Barbie is going to convince girls that Barbie's body doesn't rock? Please. Now you just have a bunch of 8 year-olds even more confused.

"Mommy, why isn't my head smaller than my boob?"

If you go on to read all of the story the chick goes on to say that the proportions are not exact, or really close to it.

Regardless, barbie is not proportioned right and does set unrealistic expectations, even if this example is a gross exaggeration.

I thought Barbie would be scaled differently if she was human size, the head and arms seems too small on the model.

Well, lets be honest, if you full scaled GW models they would look funny too. Miniatures always have strange proportions to exaggerate details.

Well, it's not a perfect model, as it was built out of pre-existing parts to match the general scale. So that thing can be called Franken-Barbie.

Waaaaaaaaay back in 7th grade, I remember they brought in these cardboard cutouts of what barbie and g.i. joe would look like in real life, and honestly, franken-Barbie is not too far off.

Sure, but the point is for people to be aware of why.

I mean, you can look at GW miniatures with their chunky frames and stupidly big guns, and say 'that's because this is totally metal and is about big, strong men with stupidly big guns firing stupidly big bullets that make a gory mess of the target'*

And with barbie its good to ask why those proportions were chosen, and what effect they have on young girls.

So it was. For some reason, I took Andrew1975's post to be from you, most likely from some disconnect in my head that took your post as a reference to another post you had made(which was his).

Looking at it now, I can see what you're actually saying, other than what my brain interpreted earlier.

Just like 'heroic scale' miniatures have oversized weaponry in order to make weapon detail more of a feature, and increased arm breadth for sturdiness and an illusion of proportion.

I do not think Barbie is exploitive, a lot of the proportions are based around practicality.

Barbie is first and foremost a fashion doll, and the female proportions , based on fashion takes especial note of shoulders, breast, waist and hips. All other proportions are secondary. Any fashion attire has to have marked differences in order to show the curve of the fashion, as normal proportioned dolls at that scale would have very limited distinction, a couple of millimetres here and there, it would leave not a lot to work with.

Secondly for fashion dolls arms and legs need to be artificially slender, preferably with removable hands and feet in order to make it feasible to dress the doll. A plastic doll with proper proportions arms would be a problematic to dress, beyond the patience of most children. There is a market for better pro-portioned dolls, but most often with glued on or sewn on clothing.

I do not think Barbie would have survived if it was disproportionate for reason of exploitation, it would have generated a lot on of complaints and sooner, and allowing for its market demographic doesnt make any sense..

Clarification for the hard of thinking.

Barbie is marketed towards girls, so the usual sexist message behind characters with oversized breasts and tiny waists would be an anti-sell.
Therefore Barbie is proportioned as is for different reasons. Unlike earlier version renders of Lara Croft for instance.
