In Legion, one of the IG generals has a big cat (like a leopard or somesuch) as a pet. I seem to recall some nobles mentioning something about hunting dogs in one of the Ciaphas Cain novels. In Fear the Alien there is a short story about some escaped zoo animals, which is kind of similar. If I recall, there is even a figure for a bear that was a communal pet for an IG regiment, like a mascot. I know that the Tallarn employ horses, which some people consider a pet. Inquisitor Lord Torqemada Coteaz (sp?) has an eagle. In the most recent Cain novel, the title character notices that the Adeptus Mechanicus treats the camera drones more like pets than machines.

As far as theoreticals go, I think that pets are pretty much an inseperable part of humanity. Cats, dogs, and birds would be common. I think that the type of world is the most important factor. Hive worlds would see rats and whatnot, self-sufficient animals, more in vogue. Feudal worlds would have hunting dogs and birds of prey. Death worlds would be all about what kind of animal could provide some kind of advantage for survival. They might not even be domesticated, just animals that the natives live in a kind of symbiotic relationship with. I could even see the AdMech having their acolytes train by repairing mechanical animals or small servitors, which might easily be treated like pets. Adeptus Sororitas and Imperial Guard groups could easily have mascots or animals employed for specialist purposes.

Hope this helps.

In ye olde days, miners often carried a certain kind of bird with them, because their singing indicated whether there was explosive gas in a mining chamber. Today this is, of course, probably replaced by proper sensor equipment, but it would seem fitting for 40k. In a similar way, I could imagine animals and xenocritters of all kinds are used for all kinds of purposes. You can go wild with ideas for each of the million worlds, I guess.

The bird's were canaries, and they new there was toxic gases when the bird died.

I know there were cats called "gyrinx", I seem to recall that they were very loyal and psychic(?).
Orfeo Culzean from the Ravenor books has a "simivulpa", which I assume from the name is a Monkey/fox thing.
I know rats are still present, seeing as how they liked dark, confined space ship corridors.

Skaven are not pets. They're an intelligent, technology-producing race that favors the use of Warpstone and other warp-based materials to add "extra kick" to their toxic concoctions. Making one your pet will probably be the last action you take before you're struck with some nasty, flesh-eating disease that also makes you sprout tentacles out of your face and a giant spider's body out of your left half.

The Warhammer Fantasy world has never been, so far as I know, declared concurrent with 40k by GW. It was a popular fanon belief that the Old World of WH Fantasy was locked away in a warp-storm somewhere... but this does not make it so.

That is incorrect, in the book Realms of Chaos the Lost and the Damned it mentions that the planet that Warhammer Fantasy takes place is in the time of WH40k

You are either trolling or you don't know that GW has retconned that...

This is not why canaries were used in mines, they were used to warn of the presence of noxious gas or lack of oxygen.

You are actually incorrect, welcome to the land of retcons and do-overs. The fluff has changes massively since the classic chaos books and GW have clearly stated that the 2 universes are completely seperate.

Back to OP, WD had a chapter approved unit for 'pets' in their creature feature articles, it allowed dog sized animals to be attached to a character. In the IoM it would be very reasonable that working level humans would have hunting style animals, while high born/officials would have rare animals as pets.

Rogue Traders probably keep all sorts of interesting, exotic, and potentially deadly pets.

There are some who walk until their legs fail them and they fall to the ground. I find that respectable.
Then there are those who drag themselves further. I find that admirable.

I want to see what type of pets are kept on Catachan.. I don't think anything Terran would make it, and all of the native Catachan stuff we know of would eat you as soon as it got big enough. Maybe not the barking toads, but you DO NOT mess with the toads!

In one of the GG books(the one with WW1 Trench warfare, as if that narrows it down) a HQ Staff member tells a joke about a child with a pet hound and feline. The context suggestions that those animals are still common pets.

In "Chaptures Due", one of the Imperial Guard Lord Generals has two pet dogs (I think their German Shepards or somthing) and in Gaunts Ghosts series, war dogs are mentioned twice (both used by the enamy) the first is by the Blood Pact and the other used in Guns of Tanith and again by The Republic of S---- (can't remember their name) in Straight Silver.

I'm surprised The Imperium of Man does not round up tamable animals and armor them up for warfare. I want to see armored gorillas, eagles, or some sort of tamable dinosaur rampage through enemy lines. In fact, why don't other races do that too? (tau not included...they recruit everything)

In the novel Draco an astropath is mentioned as owning a cat. The Inquisitor has never seen one before and describes it as "a small predator with sharp teeth". This suggests that it depends on the world.

Also, the Imperium refers to animals by variations of their scientific names, weirdly.

Bears are referred to as Ursa, while cats tend to be called felis or felines. I assume they mean "an ursa type animal" or "a feline animal, similar to how the Loxatl are referred to as "lizardlike" when they do this.

Assuming cats were basically moved to every single world the Imperium went to, which is likely as they are quite useful at killing off predators, they would change to suit the environments over generations unless they were wiped out.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

Damn, ninja'd! The way the cat is described is brilliant!

Actually, does Meh'Lindi count as Draco's pet?

Lots of many and varied pets - not just in the Imperium - Eldar have them and Dark Eldar - well maybe best not discussed.

Orks have Squigs - not sure about Tau but doubtless something to add to the Greater Good.
