Nifty idea this. Pretend the trailer for your new film has been illegally filmed in the cinema and then "leak" it on Youtube. Note that the shaky camcorder effect all but disappears as the trailer progresses. Anyway, a good promo for a film that will hopefully break the trend of bad Hollywood remakes of European films.

EDIT - Ok, that trailer has been pulled now, here's the official one instead...

My one concern is that I only like every other David Fincher film

Alien 3
Seven
The Game
Fight Club (contoversial I know, but overrated IMHO)
Panic Room
Zodiac
Benjamin Button
Social Network

By law of averages, Drgaon Tattoo will be a at best, although serial killer films are his bread and butter, so maybe...

@ Ultrafool - This is the American version of a popular Swedish thriller (it has already been filmed in Sweden). A brief synopsis... disgraced journalist Mikael Blomkvist is hired to solve the disappearance of Harriet Vanger, a girl who vanished from an island whilst it was shut off from the mainland. Was she murdered? Did she drown? If she is still alive, how did she get off the island? Lending a hand in the investigation is expert computer hacker (and apparent borderline psycotic) Lisbeth Salander who has some rather impressive dragon related artwork on her back.

@ Grimtuff - Yes, see above. The Swedish version was pretty good, but IMHO it wasn't very cinematic.

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

Interesting for a US remake, it doesn't appear to have been ported into the US but looks like it keeps its orginal setting.

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

Funny, I liked that cover. I was trying to figure out who sang it. The vocalist reminded me of the singer from Snake River Conspiracy.

I never saw the original Swedish film but I like Fincher's work and I am looking forward to this remake.

Edit note, I just looked into who did the cover of the song. Looks like it is Trent Reznor from NIN and Karen O from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

It would indeed be Trent Reznor. The vocalist would be Karen O, lead singer of the band The Yeah Yeah Yeahs. I should also point out that this stage that Reznor, along with wife Mariqueen Maandig and collaborator Atticus Ross, will be doing the soundtrack to this movie.

I guess we had the same version and yep, I found it very absorbing. I recognise it's probably not for everyone though

Yeah, I liked 'Zodiac' too. Underrated and very creepy film.

I did NOT like the cover of 'Immigrant Song' - fething terrible. I can't stand Karen O and her godawful caterwauling, plus Trent Reznor is a pretentious 14 year old in a 40-something's body, who seems to be still trading off a sound that got old towards the end of the '90s. Awful crap.

The film looks OK though. I loved the book, truth be told.

SO, let me get this straight:

Hollywood wants to ruin another franchise with a big budget but poor acting... sometimes changing the plot so it "fits" their ideas...

When will they learn?

Not only is it a terrible cover, but the song is about vikings how does that relate to the movie?

Maybe because it was originally a Swedish film? Just kidding, I don't really think that (edit- at least, I don't think that that's the only reason). The lyrical content of songs isn't always the reason they are picked though, there's a lot more to it than that. Personally I thought the song was pretty cool. An interesting take on it, in any case. I don't really see much point in doing a cover that sounds a lot like the original, to be honest.

As for the OP:
Interesting thought, to make the trailer look like it was taken on a camcorder in a theater. The audio is far too good for that though. Are you sure they weren't just trying to make it different/creepy with the jerky camera at the beginning, as opposed to explicitly making it look like a pirated video?

It's in Sweden but it looks a little too modern for vikings to be around, unless the movie is about Scandinavian barbarians time traveling to the modern world where chaos and hilarity ensues.

The vikings weren't a separate race of weird creature, they are still alive today, just not in little boats walking around with axes. You also may want to look up the word reapproriation. Things don't have meaning set in stone. "Stuck In the Middle With You" wasn't written to be about a guy cutting a cops ear off but there it is in Reservoir Dogs. Again, it also helps to see the movie or read the book to get a sense of why it might have been chosen. I can't go into detail about why they might have done so w/o spoiling certain plot points.

Well, I've read the book and seen the Swedish film, and even I am having difficulty connecting them to a song about a viking raiding party, in anything other than an extremely tenuous way.

It HAS been a while since I read it, though. PM me?

You guys are missing the connection. This is America, Vikings are Swedish. And Norwegian. AND Finish. And Ive actually heard some people say they were Germanic and British as well. I love this country

You've forgotten arguably the most important location that vikings came from - Iceland.

Yeah, it makes about as much as sense as having a movie about a teenage drama in the US with Iron Maiden's "Run to the Hills" playing during the trailer. Sure the movie is American and the song is about a sample of

American history, but other than they both have US themes they're hardly related.

Well considering you haven't read the book, seen the movie, or read the PM I sent to Alby, it isn't a surprise your perspective hasn't changed.

I think it would actually help, if you pinpointed the themes in "The Girl with the Dragon Tatoo" that you feel have a connection to Viking themes.

I'm not giving anything away from this clever story. I am also guessing that this means you still haven't looked up the term 'reappropriation'.

Reading a summary wouldn't really give a sense of it either.
