Dakka Fiction is for stuff written by users of Dakka.
40k background is for the official and established background and questions on that baclground.
Background and fluff are pretty much the same thing...

Depends on the world on which they live.

Imperial Worlds and Hive Worlds are pretty much just like ours in terms of entertainment options. Radio, television, bars and nightclubs, strip-clubs, dance-clubs, and so forth and so on. On some worlds, there may even be a carnivora or other blood-sport arena, or other, less-lethal sporting events for the populace to visit.

There's also outdoor activities, such as boating, swimming, skiing, fishing, hunting, camping and all that sort of thing, again depending on the world in question. Imperial worlds are more likely to have this as a diversion, as they're less densely-populated, and less toxically-polluted, as Hive Worlds.

It is best to be a pessimist. You are usually right and, when you're wrong, you're pleasantly surprised.

Yep, they have restaurants, clubs, bars, etc. Contrary to the grimdark we have forced down our throats, Imperial citizens do things other than work, eat some scraps, kinda almost sorta half-sleep, and work...

In some of the stories, they are said to watch "Picts," which sound like our TV shows.

In Dead Men Walking, the characters talk about going to see 'newsreels' (or was it 'newspicts'?I forget...), the implication is that the average citizen does not have a tv type device, and that they in fact go to a theater to get news from the front, etc.

Depends; In Ciaphus Cain, there's a pict series called "Attack Run" about a bunch of Lightning pilots, implying that they watch stuff for fun. And the availability of picts probably varies with the world. On Scintilla? Only the middle and upper class, probably. On Ultramar? Prolly common. On most other worlds though, they won't even have them.

Im sure on their free time they would hunt heretics and then burn the heretics.

And then probably mass ***turbation to THE Emperor.

Wait, "day off"? Sounds like someone isn't doing their duty to the Imperium and the Emperor!

Now get back to work.

Joking aside, i'd imagine it'll depend on the world. You can't say that feudal word citizens watch tv shows for example.

I'd expect Death Worlders spend most of their time ensuring that the wildlife don't eat the settlement.

On a Death World, that is nap and eat day for tomorrow the fight is back on for you.

But like otherwise have said, similar things to what we do, as well as possible blood sports.

"Your mumblings are awakening the sleeping Dragon, be wary when meddling the affairs of Dragons, for thou art tasty and go good with either ketchup or chocolate. "
Dragons fear nothing, if it acts up, we breath magic fire that turns them into marshmallow peeps. We leaguers only cry rivets!

There are also references to mass-broadcast sporting events, as well as mentions of dramatic depictions of Inquisitors fighting caricatures of heretics.

The blank in Ravenor does too.

All evidence points to the vast majority of citizens living in conditions that aren't much different than the average laborer in India or China, only in a world where toxic waste turns you into something out of the Star Wars Cantina (See: Eisenhorn), instead of just giving you black lung and nine types of cancer (though it does do that too).

What imperial citizens do for entertainment?

They die.

Coincidentally that is also what they do at work.

Citizens of Krieg probably mess around in the muck, like in the peasant scene from Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Except the muck is radioactive.

There are some who walk until their legs fail them and they fall to the ground. I find that respectable.
Then there are those who drag themselves further. I find that admirable.

There's some sort of chess-game equivalent (Regicide I think it's called) and there's probably TV on some worlds, though it's likely heavily monitored by the Arbites.

I remember in 15 hours it talks about what Administratum adepts do, the poor chaps only got 1 day off a year (the "day of the Emperors ascension") and worked most of the day, those kinds of people really have no time for any form of entertainment.

I do know that in Blood Reaver, Maruc (shortly before the Night Lords arrive) goes back to his little hub and uses a what is described as a t.v remote to turn on a teleivesion (neither of those terms are used, I just don't remember what they were called in the book.), where a priest is conducting a cerimony.
There is most likley T.V but it's proabbly like North Korean Telieveision with Religious programms mixed in.

I was going to say: hunt heresy? I mean this is the grim future, or the grim darkness or the grim something we are talking about here.

Not really, the imperium isn't as sexually repressed as some people like to think it is. Read any number of books, they all have their "gentlemen's clubs"

We're watching you... scum.
