Deadly Dark Eldar Warrior

Hello fellow dakkanaughts, I have made this thread to talk about the best PC games ever made.
For some strange reason, I hate most modern games. It might be because I can never play any new games, because my computer sucks, and
my father thinks PS3s are a much more expiensive, which is why I started playing warhammer 40k .
However, oneday whist I was helping to clean the basement, I found Civilization 2, installed it, and fell in love.
I have played some pretty old games, which I believe far exceed any new game on the market. Games like Thief, System Shock 2, Dues Ex, I Have no Mouth and I Must Scream
and of course UFO defence.
I was wondering if anyone could tell me some other classic, classic games for PC, and what you like about them.
Many Thanks

Age of Empires 2 - Because it's fricking awesome.

Mandorallen turned back toward the insolently sneering baron. 'My Lord,' The great knight said distantly, 'I find thy face apelike and thy form misshapen. Thy beard, moreover, is an offence against decency, resembling more closely the scabrous fur which doth decorate the hinder portion of a mongrel dog than a proper adornment for a human face. Is it possibly that thy mother, seized by some wild lechery, did dally at some time past with a randy goat?' - Mimbrate Knight Protector Mandorallen.

The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall - because it has more content than any other game I've ever seen, and it basically single-handedly revolutionized the RPG by giving it an esoteric leveling system (this is the game that started the experience system that The Elder Scrolls games are known for). Some of the content is randomized upon every install, too, so it has an endless amount of replay value. The action may feel a bit clunky by today's standards, but it's still a completely absorbing and addictive game that dumps endless amounts of options upon you at every turn. The entire world of Tamriel is at your disposal, and it's rich with history, culture, and lore.
You may still be able to download it for free from Bethesda's website, though you'll have to mess around with a DOS emulator to get it to work.

What to start with....hmmm.
Ultima 7, the black gate or ultima 6, for defining what essentially is the 3rd person RPG.
Privateer, for creating the virtual universe and also creating eves gameplay.
Jones in the fast lane - this is what first created the sims basically.
Master of Orion - Pure awesomeness, random events, awesome weapons and amazing gameplay.
Settlers 2/3 - fun games, with lots of tactics.
Battlefield 1942 - The mother of the FPS MMO.
Might and Magic is always good fun.
http://www.abandonia.com/ is your pass to free good old games.

Counter-Strike (Source or otherwise)- excluding some of the fanbase, a really classic game
Half-Life- need I say more?
Company of Heroes- very good, affordable RTS, can't say much about the expansions, though
Starcraft- sorry to all of you guys who don't like the mere mention of SC, due to it having many similarities with 40k to be considered by some of a ripoff, but still, it looks great
Civilizations (Whole series)- is the concept of world domination unappealing to anyone?
Dungeon Keeper- very nice, let's you play on the evil side for once, kind of like a simulator and an RTS combined
DOOM (Whole series)- I like to think of DOOM as the granddaddy of all FPSs, I respect your opinion, but there's a good chance that most who say different are hopped up on CoD
That's about all the ones that I could name off the top of my head. :/

Meh, when I think of classic games, I think of Atari, NES, and Genesis eras, but YMMV.
Man, I love me some Might and Magic 2 or Metal Warriors on SNES...

Besides Baldur's Gate, Planescape: Torment was a really good game.
As also said, the Ultima series (though I only played 6, 7 & expansion, and Underworld 2) and UFO... Sam & Max, Full Throttle, the original Monkey Islands, Day of the Tentacle (& Manic Mansion) and so on...
Frontier Elite 2 was also a great game, according to one of my older brothers. And I still play Doom and Colonization

Yup it was, I loved it so much that I got it for my PC.
I bought it in a Bullfrog compilation back that came with Powermonger, Populous 1 and 2, Magic Carpet and Theme Park.
Was worth the purchase just for Syndicate!
The last level on the Oil Rig with Gauss Guns shooting every where is just awesome.

Sadly, I would agree with you.
There are some enjoyable great games out there but you don't get the likes of Project X, Turrican, Chaos Engine, North and South etc anymore. These games were truely great.
I guess it's something to do with the advancement in the technology.

Jaysus, terrific call. *collapses frothing with intense flashbacks*
Speedball, Rick Dangerous, 1942, Airborne Ranger, Gryzor.
Having said all that, rose tinted glasses can be fun to wear. Recently saw a youtube vid of Project X and whilst it did bring back some fantastic memories, it wasnt what I remembered it to be.

Speedball 2 on the Amiga was amazing. The cry of "Ice cream, Ice Cream" still rings in my ears every time I think about it.
1942 was a great game as well, I had that on my C64.
I know what you mean about the rose tint specs, but I still play Speedball 2 on my Megadrive and when the nostalgia is really bad a game of Cannon Fodder or Silkworn on the Amiga and they still are as fun as they were back in the day.

Despite population growth and increased distribution worldwide, game sales have gone down, and most would regard the industry in decline.
Objectively games are worse as they're not selling better, despite better technology, distribution, lower prices (thanks to inflation).
A game that adheres to old school principles sells a lot though, as you saw with the New Super Mario Bros Wii game; meaning those who buy that sort of game still exist, in greater number than 'core gaming' does these days.
