So after seeing http://www.warseer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=252687 i was inspired. Dark angels were my first army back when i sorta started in about '04. After taking a lonnnng break, i came back with actual interest in what i was doing and started back up with dark angels. Then i switched over to space wolves, and then started a whole new army of dark angels. So now i'm in the process of converting my current models into a Pre-Heresy styled army, and i also hate those cream-colored terminators so that was a plus when switching from Post Heresy to Pre Heresy.

So there we have it, two terminators, and a kitbashed librarian. Maybe he'll be a sergeant as the libbys for DA are lack-luster in my opinion, though one physic test save can't be that bad.

Did some more work today, finished up the lascannon brother, and added the other pauldron on the CML terminator.

Note: I have since added a bit of battle damage to the lascannon guy, not really feeling it so i might just repaint black.

Tried some of the OSL mumbo jumbo, yea i know its poor, but it's my first attempt. think i missed the hand so it really messed the whole radiating from a source part.
Also here is some battle damage. Think I'm gonna repaint, if someone could give me a good guide to doing that it'd be much appreciated.

ACK! mold lines. Guess this guy wasn't as done as i thought.

More work done. Got the terminators dark angel'd up, and the winged helmet dude also scrollified.

Gonna green stuff the sword claws and wings on the back.

So now a question, to anyone who's actually reading this, do you think i should use the Dark Angels Codex, or the Space Marine Codex? Personally i like the idea of a 10 man termie squad with a librarian and some named captain. But i also like having fearless bikes and termies, and 5 man squads with special weapons. Anyways drop your comments below.

I really like the customization. I think you're on your way to making a sweet ass army!

AAAAND to answer your question, spec it for BOTH!!! Paint it to be Dark Angels, and who gives a damn if you decide to run it as a standard SM company. IT'S YOUR ARMY!!! BUILD IT AS YOU WISH!!! (just so we're clear, its' not shouting at you, it's shouting with you!)

Not a problem. I know what it's like to work on a blog and crave responses that just aren't coming in. Believe me, once you start putting up more of your work (WIP stuff really works for me), and keep asking for input, you'll be getting a lot more hits.

I mean, I don't have anything as great as the Rebuilding the Mantis Warriors blog, but I'm happy with my GK blog (link below).

But seriously, I LIKE what you've done for the DA's. I've NEVER seen anything like those modifications done before, and they do work REALLY well. Even the simplest little changes make the biggest impact IMO on the final product.

And, please feel free to hit me up if you want my input on anything. Lol I will warn you, I speak as I see it, but no offense is EVER intended.

Loving your work. I was thinking of doing the same thing on my DW re: the Typhoon Cyclones. I decided against it(purely based on I like the actual Cyclone bit), but it looks better than I thought it would.

Thanks, It still needs some work, but if on the table all painted up, i doubt one would actually notice the work it needs. I like the Cyclone bit also, but then i don't really like land speeders. problem solved.

Funny story: I own 4 Land Speeders.

Somehow.

I've never bought a Land Speeder, people just GIVE them to me because they're lying around(including my 2nd ed metal Ravenwing version and 1st ed marine version).

What I've seen done (that I really liked) was taking those same typhoon missile launchers from the speeders, cutting the missile feed tubes completely off, smoothing it down to just the pod itself, then mounting them on the back.

BUT what you could also do is get some Dread leg pads (probably the standard blank ones) and then just mount them on those.

I just like that method better because on marines I prefer practicality, cause they're marines. Exposed missiles or ammunition's = BOOM.

If only people could just GIVE me stuff.

That is true. I'll try it out on one guy from other squad and see how i like it.

And THAT is the best thing about non vanilla marine legions - you have the freedom to do different subtle variations and some more less-subtle variations, and not have it look awkward. I've seen too many Ultra Smurf armies look great, except for the 7 or 8 of the 40 guys that have waaaay too much extra stuff added on.

Exactly, That's one of my fears with these guys, is adding way too much to them, and having it just look terrible.

I'll give you a piece of advice which has served me well.

If you're working on an army you REALLY care about, make sure you assemble each model so that each one, if presented by itself, tells its own story.

For me, I begin choosing the legs and the chest. The legs dictate how it should be placed on the base and how the torso will attach. Then, the arms go on so that they follow the flow set by the legs (movement, reaction, etc.). Then the head goes on last, and it usually either follows the direction of the legs, or goes against it.

Look at my GK's, and you'll see what I mean. Hope it helps!

Where's the head from your librarian from?
By the way, there seems to be a little bit too much going on on your termis. Just a thought.

They're Termies, that's the point. Self-Lauded bastards they are . Head's from the ravenwing upgrade sprue, think it was supposed to be a techmarine head, but it looks cool for me.

@Markillius08 Yeah, for these guys i actually just kinda threw them together for the most part. The next 20 or so guys i'll take more time on. Thanks for all the advice and suggestions.

More Updates.
Finished up a bolter marine.

And redid the CML like them alot more now.

More To come: The rest of the Terminators Converted and painted, Some Sanguinary Guard as Vanguard Vets for their wingy goodness, and the rest of the first squad. Oh yeah and a leader of sorts. still working that out.

Did some work on the Sgt/Libby, Decided on Libby, Finished basecoating pretty much all of him, and washing him. Waiting to dry, then gonna go back and highlight, and post pics tomorrow. I'm contemplating giving him a Winged Jump Pack and having him run with the Vanguard vets. Meh, we shall see.

Like the look of the blade. Also, great job on the painting. Very smooth overall. I'd suggest thinning down the highlights just a tad, possibly darken them up too, but really not necessary as the model looks nice as is.

Thanks, overall this is probably my 6th attempt at highlighting. So i feel like I'm doing all right with it. Maybe i'll throw a wash on the highlights to darken them down.

The trick (and if you look around on here others will tell you similar) is to use a stiff brush, and only use the side of the brush, not the tip.

What little bit I've done (I suck at it, but practicing) is to use a highlight color, and then come over it with a very VERY watered down base coat, and tough it up on the edges. Even if it's not a perfect highlight line, putting that watered down coat helps blend the edges and makes it look a little more realistic. Least in my opinion. But trust me, ANY highlights are nice, specially when I can't do them for JACK lol.

Cool, I've done retouching up before and sometimes i just make it look even worse. But i guess if it's watered down enough, i can just wipe it away before it's too late.

I try to touch things up with paint that's very easily moved about. It seems that watering it down works best, just make sure you apply it in small amounts and let it have ample time to dry.
