The only complaint I could make is that there are mold lines all over the sergeants chainsword. Other than that they look good! Nice work

Just my 2 cents

Very good start, although I always hate seeing mould lines! If it's possible you could always try to get you highlights a little finer, but for the moment they look good. Washes work miracles on fabrics so I would be tempted to try some devlan mud on the fatigues and maybe the ogryn flesh wash on the hands and face.

Bad excuse, but i dont atcually own anything to remove mold lines, other than a large kitchen knife if that would work , but yeah i hate mold lines too i just dont want to hack the model to bits trying to get rid.

For the wash i intend to do that when i get hold of some devlan mud.

Thanks for the tips

Or else, of you have the patience, you can paint the cloth in a darker shade and then kinda drybrush it on. It doesn't need to be a "real" drybrush, just have enough paint to paint the parts you want in that colour, and then make sure that you don't get to much in the recesses!

Not as easy as a wash tough, but IMO it looks a bit better and might be used on the HQ or other models that stands out.

Just go with what you think look better

What is easy for the cloth parts (but takes long.)

Paint them khemri brown, wash them with devlan mud, highlight several layers(!) of kommando khaki.
For the armor I do catachan green with a really thin highlight (on the edges) of camo green.
For the face and hands and such, I do tallern flesh, wash them with ogryn flesh and with devlan in the deeper areas (eyes, etc), then highlight with tallern flesh again, and then a thinned down elf flesh.
For the whites I do black, astronomican grey, and then highlight to white (but leave the grey and black visible. Like use black to seperate white areas, and grey for the shading.. If that is understandable.)

This is how I do mine, might take a while but worth it.
And you might not want to do the eye whites and pupils(?), They make the model look kinda scary and or slowed if you can't get it just right (Which is hard, I just don't do it.)

Although I can see you got your idea down, you might want to work on your finishing, like the moldlines and or any other things, ofcourse I don't know how long you have been painting. So can't really say if its good for your level.
But I can tell you that you are on the right way. (or something like that.)

About 3-4 week but before these it was the old style DE which are a lot easier to paint.

Thanks for all the advice guys, i think my main priority is getting rid of mold lines, that seems to be my highest priority, the rest will come with practise and time i geuss.

Removing mold lines is pretty easy with an exacto knife. Use the sharp edge to remove the parts where it connected to the sprue, and then flip it over and use the dull side to scrape at the mold lines (that way you don't ruin the sharp blade). Just don't be a dumb feth-head like I was and cut the crap out of your thumb... twice... in the same day...

It took me forever to learn that mold lines should be removed. Don't worry, I think everyone does it.

It's a pretty fine start!! If you want to add a bit of depth, may I suggest using the 'pro painting in a bottle', aka Devlan Mud wash. Slap a layer of that over the khaki pants on your Cadians and they'll look ten times better. I'm not kidding, Devlan Mud is magic.

Iv definately thought about it, but im worried it ma make the khaki colour darker? Are my worries founded or will the wash just run into the recesses and not colour my khaki, I dont mind some darkening but definately not alond the lines of badab black wash.

Try some devlan mud, it blends the highlights all together and adds more natural shading than badab black.

Other than that, I don't see anything wrong. The bases look nice.

Thanks guys, im going to go with the devlan mud, as soon as its done and i have more of a squad done i will get some picks up.

Another quick question (rather than starting a new thread) How can i get the end of my flamer on my guardsmen look scorched and burnt out?

I painted my Tac Marine Sergeant's robe with Bleached Bone, and gave it a wash of Devlan Mud. It definitely darkens it some, but the effect is AMAZING:

Good job! I definitely agree that a wash will make a huge difference. The eyes and the highlights on the armor look great, although I would never have had the patience to do I on all of my guardsmen!

See?!? What did I tell you -- sure, it's darker, but it's GORGEOUS!!

It also sounds a bit strange, but try a semi-light layer on a face to see what you think of it. Devlan Mud is good for EVERYTHING, man, it'll smooth out the detail lines.

How would i get the wash lighter for the face?

@anyone , does anyone have an idea how to do the banner, i totally messed up with the white and decided rather than suffer the pain all over again i would go with a dark colour. any ideas?

Well, I'm always fond of blue myself, as you can do some nice gold, red, and white details on it and they will really pop. Dark greens work pretty good for that as well. The white doesn't look too bad, though. How did you apply it? did it go right down over the primer? If you are using a black primer, it would be better to put down some grey base coats before the white. After that, it just takes many thin applications of white to get it to pop.

The troopers look much improved! Isn't it amazing the difference a wash makes? As for lightening it up for the faces, my preferred method is to either use a lighter wash entirely for skin (like Ogryn Flesh), or else dilute the Devlan Mud with a little water.

Lost in the warp. Halp!

By 'lighter' I meant more that you don't lay it down really thick, not diluting it. Though if you want to, you can probably just add a touch of water to the pot to make it last longer.

@Candroth, i will try that after their all painted up, im leaving faces until last as i geuss my painting will improve a bit by then .

@ruckdog i decided to strip the white and go for a khaki washed with devlan (i decided the banner was to fiddly for my skill). It looks good as is and will be easily workable on when i have improved.

Looking good! Just be sure to take care of those mold lines on future builds! Your armoured sentinel could also use some greenstuff work around the crew compartment. Its a bit of extra work but it will really add to the finished product.
