As it says what was the first chapter of space marines you painted yourself? Was it the color scheme you liked or maybe the iconography that brought you to it? Or something else entirely?

For me my first chapter that I painted way back when was the Blood Drinkers. I think it was mostly the grail logo of them and the red armor was nice too.

My room mate at the time painted Flesh Tearers, but then started experimenting with all sorts of wild camouflage schemes.

The first one I painted was a Word Bearer for one of my army buddies. His army of choice, and I was bored at the time, so I offered to do it.

Edit- I know that the Word Bearers aren't a chapter, but close enough for this I think...

Ultramarines - because I liked blue and I actually liked the notion of the "boy scouts" of space marines. I am currently torn though between finishing the rest of my models as ultramarines or as dark angels.

Ultrasmurfs cause i got them in Battle for Maccragge and painted them up so the Nids I had at the time could eat them up.

Ultramarines, because blue was my favorite color and when I Googled "Space Marine Captain" the first pictures were Ultramarines.

I started the hobby with AoBR and didn't want to do Ultramarines as they were on every box and all the other kids seemed to collect them, so I started with Crimson Fists as they were presented in the booklet coming with the box.

I started painting blue marines because I liked the way Ultramarines look for the most part. I didn't want to look exactly like them though, so I substituted the yellow around the shoulder pads for bright green, with bright green for the eagles on their chests too.

I've stuck with that color scheme all these years, amd it's evolved into my own chapter of custom vulkan marines. Vulkan He'Stan looks dope in blue!

Ultramarines, painted them up for a buddy of mine who couldn't paint very well.
I've also painted Space Wolves, Blood Angels, and a few " owner created" chapters...though oddly I've never owned a SM ( unless you count Chaos) army of my own.

the Shadow Legion, painted them in a number of colour schemes but the final colour in the "shadow grey" painted with "mithel silver" as highlighting on the symbols and the shoulder pad out sides.

Created my own chapter the 'Highland Prophets' because I wanted my marines to stand out. Colours are black base with boltgun drybrush and gold trim. All the models without helmets have a scottish woad theme on their faces because I was obsessed with braveheart at the time.

Then Horus comes across the lone grot, somehow managing to kill the Emperor, and punts it into space.

Black Templars, I actually started painting them before i knew about them! I though black and white looked good with a blue cross on the shoulder pads looked good......then i found the templar codex.

I'd been gaming for a while, but my friend was just getting into it, and got Black Reach for the Orks. I bought the marines from him, mixed some Iyanden Darksun and Golden Yellow to get a bright yellow that went on well in only 2-3 coats (highlighted with pure golden yellow), bought a box of scouts and some autocannon arms for the dread, and painted up 750 points of Imperial Fists.

Under the couch

I started back in 1994 with a homebrew Chapter I was calling the 'Blackwatch'... I liked the look of the Legion of the Damned in the page of colour schemes that came with 2nd edition, but didn't think I was up to painting the flames, so just went with a black scheme.

I think I painted maybe two models before switching to Mentor Legion... got half a squad done before deciding that they were just too hard and it was going to take too long to get a whole army done up, so switched to my metallic green 'Imperial Dragons'... As a result, there are still a couple of marines in that Imperial Dragons army that have some very thick paint on them

Beyond the Ultraforest of Kwang

Tried a few different paint schemes on a box of tactical marines:

1st: Blood Angles
2nd: Ultramarines
3rd: Dark Angels

Then I painted up some of my own chapter called the Blazing Sons which were Blazing Organge with yellow trim.

Then I got board and repainted them in a silly camo scheme that was just a few different colours randomly dabbed on.

Before I got bored with wargaming I repainted them all again as 'The Ghosts' which were all black with white heads and red eyes.
