Karon wrote:Uhuh, exactly why I'm going for the Collectors Edition from THQ.
The Power Sword is the only one I'm not really sure what they are going to do with, but I know now that, clearly, the skins will be available as DLC later, which is fine by me.
I feel this is the first major mainstream Warhammer game, and will really expand the genre. WAR is an MMO, and flopped at that, so didn't really do much. DOW is an RTS, which isn't really a mainstream thing, most people like FPS or something similar.
A TPS like Space Marine will be a major success, and I expect a lot of high-quality DLC, a la Borderlands.
I'm hoping for high quality and quantity DLC but I'm not expecting it as I've seen plenty of games that should have had it never get it on consoles (PC is another story as obviously DOW has been well supported with sequels and expansions).
Looking at their previous console offerings doesn't inspire much confidence. I think Saints Row had some minor DLC from what friends told me but the others are relatively barren from what I can tell. Anyone know of well-supported post-launch console games from THQ?

You only need to complete a single level to get it, not necessarily the whole game. It's fun and I'd recommend the later but the former is all you need to do if you're just paying $10 for an electronic sword.

The release date looks like its pushed back a few days (was 9/6 - Tuesday, but not it's listed as Friday 9/9). Cool but short action video... no real news but a few nifty shots.

If so, I am going to take those dual Power Axes, I will paint my Marines yellow and I will have a nerdgasm.
Pretty certain that you can't.
Depends on your personal definition of what makes a custom chapter. If that means you design your own completely independent freehand logo and chapter markings and upload them to the game, then no. If you mean whether you can choose from the dozens of already existing chapter specific markings and the selection of generic SM and 40k ones along with complete color customization of each armor piece with two to three armor colors (including split and quartered armor paint schemes), then yes.

Hey, did you guys hear about this game with space marines coming out called Space Marine?!? I just read through the last three pages of platform war bs and didn't see it mentioned.

I'm hearing people saying about the multiplayer, is that the Assault class seems to be a lot more OP than the other classes. Thoughts?
I don't know if it'll truly be OP but it definitely looks like it'll be the noob choice with the targeting system. Since you can ground pound with 100% accuracy (due to the targeting reticule on the ground showing you where you land), I suspect noobmarines will be dropping like stukas into combat. Sadly, this is my preferred class as I had a blast on Star Wars Battlefront I and II playing the dark trooper class. Seeing people miss the platforms and their gangways on Kamino and Bespin Cloud City or slam into walls on other maps was quite entertaining and discouraged the noobs from hogging that class too much.
Melissia wrote:Wait I'm confused does this game have space marines in it.
Yes, it does... but only the male variety. The female ones with dye-job bobs and power corsets will probably be a day 30 4chan DLC mod.

Using the Dev's special attack while having the Rapid Fire perk made me lol like crazy...especially when using the Missile Launcher
LOL, quad fire with the special attack meant that I effectively couldn't see anything except explosions. Just to be on the safe side, I'd twirl in place firing until everything xenos was dead. I'm sure the emperor didn't mind!

Literally, that's about what they said in one of the interview questions. No cover system, because SMs don't use cover, or shouldn't, fluff-wise.
While I fully respect their choice of not having a cover system, saying that its consistent with fluff is bs. Space marines take plenty of cover in both the tabletop game as well as the stories. The problem is that gullible fanboys will believe that stuff and keep spouting it.

Karon wrote:Not really worried about Steam getting the demo before everyone else...I'm assuming the Demo isn't very long and you just play for like an hour and then you are done.
There are two "scenes". One where you fight off a horde of Orks, and one where you utilize the jump pack in battle. How long we don't know.
The only demos I've played on the 360 that have run more than an hour were Civ Revolution and Culcept Saga. If the full game can routinely run 5-6 hours in length for a single session, an hour long demo isn't too short. For a TPS, I'd be surprised to hear that it ran longer without a multiplayer element that wasn't timed.

Sure, feel free. I'm on the forums there but mainly a lurker so I don't know what requirements they have for avatars. I know dakka's was 120x120 max resolution with 100k max file size so I tweaked it to fit those parameters.
Two things I've learned from Dr. Who and Xbox Live is that people from the UK can have vastly different accents despite the small size of the island nation and that apparently there is something wrong with Cardiff (although the doctor wasn't specific about what exactly). It's perfectly fine to have both Orks and Space Marines both have English accents as they can be easily distinguished if chosen correctly. From the limited speech in the trailers and various playthrough videos of the demo, I don't see any problem with telling the two apart in practice as well as theory. If anything, I find the DOW ork voices particularly abrasive and annoying as I'm finally playing through that series (I know... I'm behind the times regarding 40kPC games...)

I suspect the PC version will eventually get an angry marines mod or texture after release. Console users will probably not get those types of options.

How so? Yeah, the survivor AI in L4D 1 and 2 can be best summed up as idiot savants. They're stupid enough to try to heal you when you're at 75+ health but smart enough to one-shot-kill you when you're a special infected 40 feet away hiding in the bushes.

MrH wrote:If you consider playing with a 200+ ping, host advantage and regular disconnects as "fine" then no wonder you're happy. Personally I prefer to play with 20ms on a dedicated server that's not hosted on some kids ADSL connection while he downloads porn in the background causing lag spikes every 2 minutes.
I almost never get that experience and I've been an exclusive console gamer for the past 6 years. If you've got a day off and try to play in the morning in the US, you're likely to get connected to a European host with some lag (not due to the crappiness of the connection necessarily but just the georgraphical distances involved) and I'm sure the reverse is possible for you late at night (evening for the US). The only connections that are unplayable for me are hosts in Asia or Australia/NZ as those distances are just too far (the same would be true in the PC setting for this). Most multiplayer console games either have an indicator next to the host's name/game that shows you the strength of the connection or automatically choose the best host for the majority of the people joined. The systems aren't perfect but they do work 90%+ of the time, which is acceptable to me. In the average multiplayer shooter evening session of several hours on the xbox, I might run into a noticeably laggy game once or twice max and they usually aren't as bad as what you're describing (those are once or twice a week).

GalacticDefender wrote:What exactly are dedicated servers? Also, will the multiplayer be run though STEAM?
WTF the multiplayer is pay to play??????????
While I'd assume the MP will be run through steam if you buy it there (I believe thats a general rule they have), I don't know about other sources of the PC running through steam or not. As for dedicated servers, its when the "host" is a company's server. When you're playing p2p (peer to peer), some normal guy/girl with their home connection and computer is "hosting" the game. The fear is that his/her connection is spotty or the computer isn't fast enough to communicate well with all the people who join.
As for the last part, all multiplayer is pay to play since you're supposed to buy the game first. They don't have a special charge for multiplayer separate from the purchase of a new copy of the game. If you buy a used copy, there might be a special surcharge to access multiplayer as publishers have been doing that to make some money directly on used game purchases.

Is there a toggle on the console version for friendly fire? What options do you have when when setting up a console game? From the pre release info, we're only getting 5 maps. What do they look like generally?

Anyone tried the assault marine with a bolter and power sword? That was going to be the combo I'll be eventually shooting for as I just think it looks pretty damn cool. If anyone has unlocked it, how does the bolter feel with the assault marine? Useful or like tits on a bull?

You might have to call your ISP if you got your modem from them. If you're lucky, the company left you the instruction book for the modem but that doesn't always happen. How did you try to change the settings?

Its better than having your console konk out on you two weeks before the release like mine did and having to wait a month for the repaired one to come back! Half glass full, Ruckdog!

So how does friendly fire work (or not) in multiplayer? Does the host toggle it on/off when setting up a match or is it just off period? My question is specific to consoles (xbox) as I expect that the PC version has more options.
MrH wrote:FF is better left off in this sort of game, if not you'd just have kids ruin it for everyone by intentionally team killing.
If that were the justification, NO game should have friendly fire. Douches like the ones you're describing populate every game on every platform in varying degrees. I was just wondering if you can toggle it on when hosting to play a bit more realistic (lol, yes, I went there) game of toy space soldiers. On a related note, can the host boot individual players in either public or private matches?

MrH wrote:I would be perfectly happy if FF was off on all public multiplayer games.
And I agree that should be the standard (but not only match type). I actually usually prefer playing FF on in multiplayer games as long as there is some easy system of booting a player permanently who tries to abuse it. I'm just wondering if space marine will be able to scratch that itch in public and/or private matches.
